the butterfly effect

dominoWell, I guess it’s really no secret that butterflies have been rounding the bend in the world that is decor and design trends, for quite some time now. {don’t you just adore the ceiling in that room?}

via architects for lifeMaybe it’s all the inclement weather (read: the “ice storm” sans any snow we montgomerian southerners like to freak out over react to.) But something tells me they’ll be bigger than before, this spring. Here’s a few things I’m currently loving in the design world, that share in the flutterby paraphernalia.

The icon of the butterfly is a lot like the color pink. It can be fabulously awesome in the right shade, but once you go all pepto on people, you leave a bad taste in their mouths. I think that the key to using a touch of butterflies in your home, is using it in a subtle, distinctive design. And sometimes in unexpected ways (see wallpaper above) with subdued colors. {read: steer clear of pantihose wings in hot pink. Just sayin.’)

ballard designsThese prints from ballard designs are available in a series. They also quickly add a touch of sophistication and color to any space. They would look awesome in a study…and are a great alternative to the whole I-caught-and-killed-this-here-purdy-flutterby-so-I-can-keep-it-in-a-case-until-it-disintegrates. Something about that saddens me. And grosses me out all at the same time.

An unexpected take on butterflies in this delightful illustration…it looks awesome in the entire series created by the artist.

They’re cropping up everywhere…even as napkin holders…

I think they’ll be even more mainstream this spring…how about you?
