Holla all you wonderful people! So, I’m doing a little blog upkeep today… {Insert super fake excited jumpingupanddowness, here.} But I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately about which colors are which, in our home. And then I realized that the last post I created on paint colors used in our spaces, was over a year ago, and a. everything’s changed since then and b. um, gross photography. Need I say more? I put together a fun little collage series with simple, easy-to-reference images of our home. TADA! Aren’t you proud?
I guess it’s because I’m tired, but the more I stare at this little starter image, the more I realize that this photo is a little over the top. Wouldn’t ya say? I was trying to be all colorful with funky perspectives and other artistic crapola whatnots. But it’s like the only thing that’s missing is a great rendition of Rainbow Connection a-la Kermit the Frog. And while I don’t find muppets at all remotely terrifying, for some reason the image of Grimace popped into my head. So I thought I’d share.
He’s all, what’s up guys? {insert creepy volatile clown laugh} Want some fries? For some reason, this image is so terrifying, I’m quite driven to go check on my children. Right now. Twice. I mean, what if you woke up and he was standing over you? What if you went to check on your kids, and he was laying in the bed instead? What if when you wash your face at night, and open your eyes again, he’s behind you in the mirror?!?! Eating FRENCH FRIES!?!?!?! So many horrible possibilities.
I was barely holding it together with the elf shindig over Christmas, so this just might send me over the top if any of you were to dress up in that outfit and show up on my doorstep. Just sayin. He’s like a half melted fuzzy gumdrop that ate the cookie monster. Or your kids. Whichever comes first.
Back on topic after becoming dangerously derailed … Before we begin, in reference to tea stains and painting furniture, check here...and here to read more about each of our spaces. Please feel free to ask me any specifics in the comments section…There was a deliberate consistency in every space, and each color can be found in our home in more than one place. It’s how we roll. But I wanted to share today, because these are some of our favorite colors used in our home. Sans Grimace.
So without further ado:
In the Foy-ay {That’s southern french, for foyer.} And dining room:
The living room:
the kitchen:
the laundry room:
The playroom:
I hope this helps with any questions you may have had, regarding my severely dated and irrelevant post with poorly lit rooms and sub par photography. I rock.
Hope you all have a wonderful day. Hugs to all of ya and your short weeks! ;}

Great colors! And I just loved having a little tour of your house again in one post. I especially love your veranda & that adorable buffet in the playroom. Inspiring!

How do you feel when you are walking around your home since so many of the colors are the same? Does it feel like kind of all one big space because it all matches? I know I chose to do all the hallways and closets the same color, just a super neutral color. And then in the rooms that connected like our dining room to living room I wanted to make sure they were complimentary of each other. One is a richer brown than the other. And I really like it. I’d love to hear how you feel about the colors being the same! Thanks for sharing!
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Jenn! I have to say, it really does, and while they’re not all the exact same, it does help to have them very similar, especially even if its only in tonal value. It helps keep our home unified. I love color, but I also love toning it down to see what it can do to a space. I enjoy walking into one room and seeing a color on the wall, and then walking into another, and seeing it on a piece of furniture. It also helps to keep most of the colors neutral, because you can switch out accent colors easily. that’s just my take on it all! ;}
ashley @ the handmade home says
ps. but I gotta say, I wouldn’t mind a splash of dark on a wall in our next home. Peacock blue with some board and batten, anyone?
Brandy says
Thank you for sharing a piece of your home with us again. The colors are inviting, stylish, and captivating all in one! Great job. I just love those playroom appliances….and we are building our boys’ loft bed this weekend! SO EXCITED!
ashley @ the handmade home says
yay so glad! let me know how it goes, Brandy! ;}

Wow, your colors all blend so well. I was concentrated on wall color the first few pictures but then I was mesmerized by furniture/decor. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the rooms all together. Your blog is one of my favorites! I started a home blog because you’ve inspired me! Thank you!

Is that a huge picture frame in your dining room? I love it! Also, the fab 5 sign. Did you make that? Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
Leen says
Thanks for sharing your colors, I love them all!
I wish I could move to AL and buy your home, it’s so lovely! Any takers yet?
Katie says
I love how cohesive your colours are, even though they are so cheery. It always feels like you can only have one or the other, but you’ve pulled both off fantastically. I did a post with our home colours last year but I’m itching to start changing things up. This post is inspiring!
Andrea says
All your colors are great and the rooms are beautiful.

thank you so very much! ;}

We’ve bought the wood for a modified (he’s 18 and sleeps on the floor…& picky about furniture!) loft bed – don’t ask me when we bought the wood. LOL! He’s approved the colors for his room – blues/dark grays/pale grays! He also approved the pallet wall – I’m in the process of that collection. I love your colors & your creative talent!

you are the best. moving in 3 weeks as you know – and will be checking back in on these paint colors. i laughed out loud today at a couch on pinterest that took my breath away – looked to the description and saw “i die” – i didn’t even have to look for the person who pinned it. it was you. and now i love you even more. a rachel zoe fan too. ah… you just keep rising higher to the top of my fave list.
Taralynn Dixon says
Would you, could you do a tutorial on how you did those large frames to display kids artwork in the playroom. I have piles of artwork I would really like to display but have yet to find something I like. Those are great!

Hi Ashley! Thanks so much for sharing all the colors! I love how you use the bright blues ! I’m always afraid of “color” but I’m in the middle of a redo and have some bright (well bright for me) colors picked so hopefully they look ok! 🙂
Melanie Malone says
Hi, I have thoroughly enjoyed your blog for the past month. I just found it. I love your colors and how each room is cohesive. Just one question ,do you use the same kind of paint on everything. I have tried,unsuccessfully, to use leftover wall paint on furniture, to have it peel and aggravate me to death(also from south Alabama).
Kara says
you guys do color so so well. every one is just beautiful. and thank you for introducing me to chantilly lace. it’s my new favorite white.
Tennille says
Hey Ashley, I’ve noticed that you have several gallery style photo walls in your house. Do you happen to have any posts on your take of how to do a gallery wall. Especially the one off your dining room with all the face pictures. I’d love to see a close up of that one and the deets on the materials you used. I love your home, it looks very comfortable and inviting and collected over time. You have a great combination of color and neutrals, a balance that I find challenging. I tend to go crazy with color or everything is blah and boring beige. Hey, there’s an idea for a future post, “balancing color and neutrals: how to get it right”. No pressure, just saying I’d read it if you posted it 🙂
Joy Hryniewicz says
Hey Ashley,
Thanks for sharing your amazing home-made home! I hope your children appreciate all the fun put into the house! Truly inspiring. So inspiring in fact that my husband is using the kids’ loft bed as a model for our kids’ loft bed. We’ve drawn up a few plans over the past few months that were a bit more involved and then I came across this site and said “that’s it!” It’s simply perfect! Quick question though, did you custom make the mattress(es)? Our room is 12′ wide and we plan to build the loft wall-to-wall so it would also be 12′. We plan to have two mattresses for our two boys and a twin is 75″ L which means our space is 6″ too small. Thinking I might have to get custom mattresses (because toddler mattresses may be too small, and twins are too long). Any suggestions?
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Joy! Thanks for the kind words! Yeah…Ours is a twin and a toddler. Right now, our three year old sleeps on the toddler mattress every night, and it’s fine for her. Malone still prefers his pack n play. But I think our toddler one will last for quite a while, and then we’ll decide what to do from there. If my boys were bigger, and the toddler mattress wasn’t working, I would probably go for custom sized mattresses. I hope that helps?
joy says
Thanks Ashley! This is very helpful but just to be sure I understand completely… you.have a twin and toddler mattress in the loft? Because we talked about that as an option but worried about the tiddler mattress being too small for the space. Did you just surround it with extra padding/pillows?
ashley @ the handmade home says
yes. that is what we did! our children are now old enough where that isn’t an issue anymore, and it has worked fine. Just make sure yours are old enough for this not to be a danger to them. My kids stay on the mattress, and the pillows come up over the edges, to act as a bumper. Malone is 2 and a half, and is JUST NOW starting to sleep up there. He still prefers the pack n play, and we’re slowly phasing him in. For now, Emerson sleeps up there, {and out of our bed-our home is like musical beds} and she started when she was three and a half. I hope this information helps. Just do what you think works best for you and your children. ;}
Joy Hryniewicz says
totally relate to musical beds! : ) Looking forward to the day when we make this loft for our boys. After talking more about it, we’ve decided to make the transformation when our youngest is ready to move in with his big bro – to make it exciting for BOTH of them. Thanks so much for all this helpful info.

What a great post! Your home is beautiful and this was very inspirational! I have a question about one of your paint colors, though.. You noted “Benjamin Moore’s ‘Robin’s Egg Blue'” a couple of times, but I can’t find that color anywhere, even on their website. I know there’s a color called “Robin’s Nest” and “Bird’s Egg”.. is it one of those or am I missing something? Thanks! 🙂
ashley @ the handmade home says
You know what? Apparently I’m just not totally with it. It’s Robin’s Nest. NICE. ;} SO sorry about that one!
Jennifer says
No problemo! Haha I probably would’ve done the same thing. 😉 Such a lovely color and might be perfect for my office space. Thank you!
Jenny Whiting says
Oh, thanks for asking and answering that question. I had the exact same one. I LOVE the pictures of your playroom and went looking at BM color samples for that same color and also couldn’t find it. Glad to know it was “Robin’s Nest.” Thanks for sharing!
Lauren says
Hey Ashley- I love reading your blog! I’m a fairly newcomer and I was wondering if you could point me the direction of any “how to distress furniture” posts you may have written? I LOVE what you have done to the furniture pieces you have and would like to do the same but don’t know where to start.
Thanks!
Lauren

I was wondering what paint colors you chose for the Hutch in Malone’s Nursery? I have been searching all over your site and all over pinterest and can’t find paint colors for that one piece anywhere!! 🙂 i have a old bookshelf that will be in baby #4’s nursery (backed with scrapbook paper and modge podge!, haha) but i WANT those colors you chose, they are perfect!! thank you!
ashley @ the handmade home says
oh my word Mary-I honestly have NO idea. ;} I did all that before I started keeping up with things. I can dig around in my garage and try to figure out the paint name for you-I’ll see if I can find it today. It’s like a minty green isn’t it?
mary says
Yes, it’s gorgeous! If i had a smart phone, i’d just take a picture in and have them match it up for me.. but alas… I’m the only 27 year old with a 6 year old phone that i refuse to give up because it survives EVERYTHING 🙂 also the overlapping cream color, too if you can remember! I seriously felt like such a goon because i thought for sure the color had to be SOMEwhere, all your other ones are….haha, glad to know I’m not losing my mind, though! If you cant find them specific names, no worries, i know in your brilliance you’ll be able to suggest something similar! 🙂 thank you so much Ashley!
ashley @ the handmade home says
Definitely. I will look it up this afternoon, and if I can’t find it, I will give you some suggestions. Are you talking about the hutch piece or the changing table/dresser piece? sorry. I got confused. ;} Let me know, and I’ll figure it out!
mary says
The hutch piece (the one you fabric lined the back of!)

I want to try the Chantilly Lace on a wooden built-in cabinet in my living room. I’m also thinking of painting an entire room with the white. Do you use the same “type” of paint for cabinets as you do your walls (satin, eggshell, gloss)?
tere says
I’m just finding you here…love your sight, such inspiration! If you venture back to this blog post, would you let me know if your trim millwork color, it looks like Chantilly Lace too, to match your kitchen cabinets. Also, what type of paint, a durable gloss or did you seal those? And if these answers will be in your book, just tell me that too, I’ll wait. Thanks!
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Tere! We have changed most of our trim over at this point, to Chantilly Lace. We still lack a few areas, though! Also, we used semigloss paint. No sealing-wipes up nicely. I hope that helps! ;}
Eileen says
I was loving the colors in your home and was so surprised to look it up and see that you’ve used the exact same colors we recently used in our music room! Whispering Spring was actually our second choice after choice number one looked much more smurf-like than I’d anticipated! I’ve used Chantilly Lace as our trim color all over the house and love it. Going over the original trim paint, which was kind of a dirty white, the Chantilly Lace just gleams.
http://scravings.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-favorite-recurring-dreamcame-true.html
ashley @ the handmade home says
Yes! Aren’t they fabulous? I don’t think I’ll ever NOT use Chantilly Lace as my go to. ;}
Eileen says
I was also going to say that I just painted some walls in Chantilly Lace and was very worried that it would be too much white, too blah, but with a blue ceiling, I love it. Seeing your house, and how happy and colorful it is without bold colors on all the walls, inspires me to add color more through fabrics and frames.
Thank you!

Benjamin Moore doesn’t have the robins egg blue. I’ve called lowes and Home Depot and they don’t have it in there computer. Do you have the number of the paint? When did you buy it? Thanks
Nicole says
Hello. I am so glad that you posted your colors! I am on the hunt for that elusive perfect blue and love your benjamin moore robin’s egg blue (seriously, I have 8 colors on my wall right now, lol.). BUT! When I type in “robin’s egg blue” on benjamin moore’s site, they don’t have it…could it be robin’s NEST blue that you have? Just hping to find my happy blue…=)
Liz says
Hi!
I loved the yellow nursery you did and did not see the name of the paint color in the photos up above? Would you mind telling me? Thank you so much! Love your home!
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey liz! It’s Behr’s Buttercup. Hope that helps!
Amy Watts says
When I look up Gold Buttercup on Behr’s website it looks almost peach. Is that the correct name? Also, Benjamin Moore doesn’t make a “Robins Egg Blue.” Was that perhaps “Robins Nest”? I love these colors and want to match them as best I can in my play room. Thanks!
Amy Watts says
Sorry- for some reason I couldn’t read the other comments before I made mine. So I got the Robins nest. Thanks!
Lindsay Ohler says
Loving your back door color! What brand/color is that? I’m sure you’ve posted it somewhere, but I don’t see it. Perfect color I’ve been on the hunt for.
Thx!

Hey Lindsay! You can find a complete list of all our colors here. thanks so much! ;}

Hi, I love all of your pictures! Can you point me in the direction of fabrics like you have in the frames in the playroom? I would love to make my room come together a little more with fabrics, as well.
