Hello all you wonderful people! I hope you had an awesome weekend and that you’re ready to hit the ground running this monday. Our weekend was filled with post-viral children. {That was a weird way to put it, and no, they didn’t turn into zombies or anything.} A requirement for parenthood and It could always be worse, but we’re glad they’re feeling much better now. As many of you guys with your own battle wounds know, post-viral is that delicate time of recovery that usually lasts for a day. That means they’re comatose on the sofa. That also means I took full advantage. A small reward from the heavens after paying your penance to the sickness gods. I think it’s meant to be more of a recovery for the parents, than anything.
What does that mean for yours truly? That rather than resting up like a sensibly exhausted mom, I jumped all too heartily on the lemonade from lemons bandwagon, and it was the perfect timing for a major project I needed to complete.
If you may remember a few quick recaps ago, we’re all things weddings around here right now at The Handmade Home. My sister takes the dive on May 5th, and that means its right around the corner. I decided I wanted to make a few things for her wedding, that she can use again in her home later, as a permanent fixture and keepsake for her special day.
This is actually some of the lyrics of the song she’ll be walking to. Very sweet when you think about the lyrics and the double meaning when it applies to marriage…The Sufjan Stevens spin. Those are planks, with hand-stenciled stained letters + paint on top. The same process you’ve seen in our living room.
Instead of a trad guestbook, she’ll be using this M for her guests to add their John Hancocks to. Later, she can hang it in their first home.
Stream of consciousness rampage: I just asked Jamin what he thought it would take to change the phrase ‘John Hancock’ to ‘Ashley Mills’ in our world of common phrasings. I mean, if you think about it, isn’t that funny? If only Johnny had known when he signed his name first on that good ol’ Declaration… Jamin said it will never be replaced. Ever. I’m not really sure people use it that much anymore. I can’t think of the last time I asked my friends for their ‘John Hancock.’ That would be weird.
He’s so closed minded sometimes. Challenge accepted.
I’ll start using it in place of John and see if it catches on. I’ll be all, “just put your Ashley Mills here.” When I ask them to sign my old yearbooks. Because now that I think about it, that’s the only way I could possibly use it that often. And when people stare at me, all kinds of confused, I’ll just add to the pregnant pause by staring back, quite befuddled.
I should write a book on inspired ideas for becoming an icon of awkwardness.
Yeah. I think my Nyquil just kicked in. Did I mention I’m trying not to get sick, too? Stinkin’ allergies.
To see the original tutorials on how to make the sign, + letters, click away! I just thought it was fun to share the ways you can use these for other ideas. The possibilities are quite endless.
Have any of you guys made your own versions? If so, I’d love to see! Any more fun handmade ideas for weddings out there? Do share!
Have an inspired day, everyone!

I’m not usually one for spelling/grammar concerns (goodness only knows how many you can find on my blog!) but if it were me I think I’d want to know this one… it’s John Hancock, not John Handcock. Although John Handcock is its whole own separate kind of funny.
You made me giggle with your “Ashley Mills.” That’s totally the kind of conversation I would have with my husband. And he would walk away shaking his head while I giggled at my genius.
Hope you feel better, and I hope this doesn’t come off as nitpicky. I’m fine with it either way. 🙂

I love that your sister is walking down the isle to “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”! That was the song preformed during our communion at our wedding ceremony 9.5 years ago! I am getting all nostalgic. *sniff* You are such a sweet sister to create all these keepsakes for her. She is blessed 🙂
