painting tips (procter & gamble + home depot giveaway)

Update: we have our fabulous winner!

winnerHappy Thursday everyone, Jamin here today stepping away from the saw and into the writing world again as Ashley continues her recovery from eye surgery. (More to come on that later.)

Here in the tropics of the south, Spring has sprung and that only means one thing around here: time to get started on some projects! Okay. Let’s be honest. Spring arriving has nothing to do with us and projects, but the weather makes it easier.

There are several building projects on the agenda, but tackling Emerson’s big girl revamp is first on the list, with grandiose plans for a new bed to lure our little nightly visitor away from mommy and daddy’s bed, and stay in her room aaaaaalllll night.

We can all dream, right?

We’ve even gone so far as to let her help pick out the new paint color. Desperate times, friends. Desperate times.

As we begin this little process that I’ve dubbed “Operation Free the Bed” we wanted, along with our good friends at the Home Depot and Procter and Gamble, to share some fun painting tips with you.

There are several musts that go into a good paint job, but one of the most over looked is having a clean surface. Most people don’t realize how dusty and dirty walls can get, and that dirty walls can affect the way paint adheres to walls. It can affect the final look of a good paint job too.

Let’s be honest. Wiping down your walls with a paper towel, and climbing up and down the ladder doesn’t inspire most of us, but it matters a great deal.

Wouldn’t wiping down those walls be so much easier if you had go go gadget arms? You wouldn’t have to climb up and down the ladder. You could cover more space in less time. You’d be all, ‘Go go gadget,’ and people would look at you weirdly but you’d be set. Maybe I watch too many cartoons. It would still be awesome.

Obviously I don’t have go go gadget arms or I’d be selling my services to the highest bidder on some weird deal via Ebay. We’re still left with the ladder debacle, unless…..wait for it…. enter the Swiffer® Sweeper. Most people think about using these gems on the floors, but who says this little bad boy can’t be used on those vertical flat surfaces as well?

It’s so easy, our three year old does it. We may or may not have been fighting over who’s turn it was next. We made it like a game and now we have clean walls (thanks to our kids).

This is a total game changer when it comes to painting prep. The 360 degree swivel head is amazing for those corners, not to mention the pole allows for easy floor to ceiling reach (In place of your go go gadget arms, of course).

But trust me when I say this is well worth the investment.

Cool sunglasses required for the fun part of paint prepping. (see: Ashley Still can’t see.)

Painting trim is another incredibly time consuming part of the process. We’re normally only painting the trim because of scuffmarks. Sure it could use a quick fresh coat, but what if you could wipe away the scuff marks first, and really make it quick? Much in contrast to feeling like you’re playing Operation, trying to get out the funny bone while avoiding paint on the wall, ceiling or floor.

So on your next paint job try this trick that will not only save you time but your sanity as well. Clean up your trim first with a Mr. Clean® Magic Eraser® Original. What I’ve found is that if you remove all the dirt and scuff marks, most times there is a whole lot less painting needed. You can generally skip the whole steady hand thing. And if you do mess up, a little Magic Eraser is there to take care of that as well.

The uses for these little products are oh so handy and endless : The Magic Eraser is great when prepping furniture to paint, or just your average scuff marks on the wall. We may or may not make that a game with the kids as well. (It’s the little things, after all.)

So today in honor of “Operation Free the Bed” the Handmade Home in partnership with the The Home Depot and Procter and Gamble want to give away a little happy to inspire you to get painting. But if you just can’t wait till the end of the contest (I feel you on that one) you can head on down to the local Home Depot and pick up both a Swiffer® Sweeper and some Mr. Clean® Magic Eraser® Original. For more great ideas on painting tips visit Home Depot’s paint like a pro page.

I LOVE Magic Erasers! They are part of my weekly clean up staples (I have a 2 yr old & a 3 yr old). I never thought to Swiffer the wall before painting. Here I’ve been going up & down the ladder ;). I will certainly do this on the next room that I paint! Thanks for the Giveaway!

What great tips! I REALLY have to paint my dining room this spring. I’m so tired of the golden color that was here when we moved in. What a great idea to prep with a swiffer! I never would have thought of using it for anything but floors.

I shared on Facebook and on Pinterest.

  6. Megan says:

I LOVE the Magic Erasers! For example, our fridge gets dirty and just a swipe with a washcloth doesn’t cut it. A quick scrub from the Magic Eraser gets ‘er done!

  7. Harbormom says:

A tip given to me by a wonderful housekeeper about 30 years ago will help prevent those marks on your woodwork: furniture polish! Yep. We lived in a turn-of-the-century house which had loads and loads of woodwork (including columns between the foyer and living room), and they were painted in a semi-gloss. She dusted them with spray furniture polish and they needed a touch-up only every 3 or 4 months. The polish repelled fingerprints, dust, etc. She also bathed the leaves of my indoor plants with milk. They loved it!

  8. Anna Vollmer says:

I use the Magic eraser all the time….most recently on my washer and dryer to get rid of all the scuff marks, they look like new again!

Ug… thank god Swiffer was invented right as I went away to college. There was no way I was going to get down on my hands and knees and clean a bathroom that 4 girls shared!
