We’re back today with a fun little series we’re so glad to participate in with some fun friends – We’re Rockin’ the Holidays with some super duper simple + fun ideas to get you in the mood for the holidaisical hooplah in the days ahead!
We love this time of year. But you know what we love more than anything else? A. Keeping it simple. No really. It must be simple. And B. Having fun with our kids. In no particular order of course, but really it’s usually easier to have aforementioned fun if it’s realistically attainable, right? {Ashley nods head enthusiastically, trying to avoid the onslaught of holiday crazies coming her way which cause a more-than-momentary-loss of complete sanity.}
So today for our little recipe, we decided to create a fun interactive table for the kiddos. Because sometimes it’s super cool to sit at the kids’ table.
We created this little getup on our back porch (note the tile floor) to keep clean up easy, but we thought it would be fun to dress up the kids table a bit. This is little recipe requires a little supervision with younger kids, and is guaranteed to get messy. Also? It’s loaded with sugar. But sometimes, life’s short and you need to have fun… so there’s that. Readers be warned. ;} Messy, sugary fun.
I’ve had these little plates forever from Williams Sanoma – they have little sections for the fondue – but even paper plates would do for easy fun. I also topped off the table with some craft paper + left over oil cloth from our studio project. Our kids are apparently just like us, and love anything extra on the table. It doesn’t take much. We broke out some mason jars + fun straws for the drinks, and cut stars from glitter paper + foam letters for “place holders” with the kids.
First, we got some Baker’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate, and melted it in the fondue pot, with a little milk.
A kinda common sense side note: Be careful with the melted chocolate, as it can be too hot with the littles – we waited for the pot to cool down to a warm consistency before we placed it in the middle of the table. Don’t have a fondue pot? No worries. We’ve only used ours about five times in eleven years of marriage. But I had to have one on the registry so, ya know. You can totally use a double boiler with this, as well. Just watch those little fingers and mouths!
The chocolate to milk ratio was about 4 bars to 1/2 cup of milk. Just stir it in until you reach the consistency you want… we just stirred it in for topping some fun items. Easy peasy!
For this fun little fondue table you will need: Ice cream cones + sprinkles = christmas tree, Strawberries + whipped cream = santa hat, and marshmallow + oreo cookie (with chocolate dabbled in the middle) = top hat. Slather them all in chocolate… decorate, and you have yourself a fabulous sugar rush!
For their drinks: We let them choose a cotton candy of their choice + poured some sprite in their jars. It was a fun multicolored insta-drink to compliment the dish! They felt so special. Actually, I did too. I was stealin’ sips and stuff.
A rare treat + a real hit at the Mills Hizzy Holidaisical Hooplah extravaganza!
And the scary aftermath sugar rush.
Chloe wondered why she couldn’t have any.
