Baby, it’s cold outside.
Seriously, we live in Alabama, and people say it doesn’t get cold here… but they lie. They all lie. Because our fingers are numb. I know. People in Saskatchewan are totally rolling their frozen eyeballs at us right now {if they don’t get them stuck in the back of their heads}. Y’all are hardcore.
But dangit, we’re cold. Humor the southerners, okay? We just don’t know no better. Come go with us. Sweet tea and other of that them there stereotypical shenanigans. Wheeee!
So when it’s really cold outside, we believe this is prime nesting season. Right before the fun urge of all things fabulous and spring hit, is the chance to freshen up your home a bit. Which naturally brings us to… we think its the perfect time to learn how to sew! Humor me, it’s where my brain goes. And what better way to take it on, than learning with pillows?
If you can sew a pillow, you can sew anything.
Over the last few years, we’ve tried our hand at a few diy versions, and thought we’d round up a few of our favorites. They’re perfect for combining awesome looks with fabrics for custom looks in your home.
Read: We can’t show you what we did to the outside of our house yet, because it’s too cold.
So without any further ramblings from yours truly: Five DIY pillows to make!
Or try. This winter.
1. The watercolor pillow
We tackled this one last summer, and loved the look it brought to our living room. Nothing says you’re ready for warmer weather like the cool effects of brush strokes on a fantastical creation of your own.
You just need a little duck cotton, paint and tape… and you’re totally rocking it with one of a kind stripeage, sporting some major style.
2. The screen printed pillow
In retrospect, I have no idea why we titled this the way we did… because no fancy tools required. But it’s a fun way to bring major personality into any space with a the beautiful simplicity of typography.
And other stuff that sounds important. Check out our screen printed pillow, here.
3. The Polkadot Pillow
Furthering the tradition of painted pillows, is one of my all time favorite collections for Emerson’s room: this fun polkadot pillow. Navy and gold are bff’s and a show stopper piece in Emerson’s room.
It’s taking the screen print a little farther, with shapes galore and a simple iron on a-la the ‘screen printing’ technique.
Which brings us to…
4. The fabric stripe pillow
Before beercanmoldpocalypse last year, we updated our bed with fun fabrical stripes. Very similar to Emerson’s stripes you see on her bed in this little tutorial, {the two of them are pictured above in our new years post.}
These fun little stripes look like they’re one of a kind, and once you’ve mastered the basic pillow, these include just a few extra steps for really great ideas! A one of a kind look at 1/3 of the price? Yes please.
Which brings us to one of our all time simplest sewing projects… in fact, if you’re just starting, start here:
5. The Lumbar Pillow
Hint: it’s made from a towel! We added this little touch to our bedroom reveal last summer, and have loved the extra fun it’s brought to our finished bedroom.
But if we rewind a little, and you’re feeling like tackling something a little bigger in your own version, whilst simultaneously ridding yourself of old fabric scraps, you can see our old lumbar pillow here and make your own version.
See why learning to sew can be so much fun?! It’s such a game changer in the world of textiles and one of a kind looks for your home – we think you’ll love it if you want to learn!
From curtains to pillows to bedding to well, just about anything you can dream up.
No pressure, but you’re totally missing out. ;}
Just kidding. Only if you want to try. But you’re not alone in tackling something new! And we’ll cover some no sew projects, too… because those are just as fun!
Let us know if you try any of these- We’d love to see. Have an inspired day!
And stay warm.

My wheels are turning…so many possibilities!
And you’re right. It is cold in the South. How far away is spring??? 🙂

Great ideas I’ve wanted to make a new pillow to put on our bed so you’ve inspired me! I may have to make a trip to Joanns tomorrow. BTW, it’s 7 degrees here in northeastern Indiana. I’m counting the days until spring too.
