I’m really excited about this room: A play space I helped a friend of mine redo. Remember this post? This reveal was a long time coming…but good things come to those who wait. {as my mom would say} I was just super excited to share.
I think the thing that I love the most about this space is the colors we chose. The yellow (which can be another tricky color) keeps it light and airy, when complimented with shots of grey, a deep fire engine red, and my current fave, peacock blue.
Andrea totally had these little benches in another room, and they were a bit of a daunting, dark leather. She reupholstered them in this fabulous light linen, to compliment her pillows she made herself. She is quite an industrious gal, and a breeze to work with in her DIY approach. She saved pennies on the dollar and achieved a custom look with her own fabrics in pillows and draperies. It really makes people so wonderful to work with when they’re brave, trust me, and dive right in. Just sayin’.
I think the fabrics chosen were right on: classic ticking stripes combined with a toile. I’m not a huge fan of toile, just because I think it was overused ten years ago, as a basic rule, but I loved this fabric, with it’s punch of bright blue. The extra touch with these charming, red buttons really upped the ante. Bonus: the seats lift up for extra storage. It really kind of tied the whole look together. She also used my tutorial to make her own magnet board frames.
I was commissioned to do a special piece for the room and I’m kind of pumped about it…
I love how it all came together. They hang perfectly on these little pieces of twine. BTW, I’ve worked with LOTS of twine, (yeah that totally sounded weird) and this was the perfect material. She found both the twine and the itty bitty clothespins and Walmart. Twine = Jewelry section. I know, right? Who knew?
These will be available in my shop in January. {Happy lil jig.}
This basket was totally Andrea’s idea. It was purchased by her grandmother in the fifties, but is much older than that. It’s quite an antique, as it was used to gather cotton in the deep south. Quite a reminder of how the times have indeed changed. I love additional texture and interest it brings into the room.
This table and chairs were a dark wood. With this simple little revamp, they were brought back to life and modernized to fit in with the space. Her kids love it.
She took em down… see how open the room feels without those view-confining blinds?
The totally put a back on this little bookshelf with some fun textured wallpaper: it makes the perfect spot for holding toys and other accessories. It also kept the shelf from becoming too heavy in the space, especially when placed beside another peacock piece: the armoire. A simple problem-solving spot for organization.
Personal touches throughout are what make the room so fabo. Some of her husband’s, planes are displayed on the shelves. They are something he collects, which will be handed down to his own kiddos one day.
This awesome little crate was found by Andrea at a local flea market: the perfect spot for holding some dress up clothes in the room.
This little guy was a christmas ornament. Sometimes the most unexpected things can make the best accessories in a room.
These shelves were made from the planks and brackets found in the lumber section of Home Depot. A cheap and charming wall option, which allows them to display some of their favorite keepsakes, toys and collectables while keeping it simple and airy.
There you have it! A playroom redo, with lots of simple, money-saving changes and a really fun end result.
Here’s to hoping you all have a wonderful frenzy-free close-to-christmas weekend.
