A friend of mine called the other day, and when she asked what I was doing, I casually mentioned that we were painting dinosaurs.
We didn’t really skip a beat in the convo. You know… just another day, painting dinosaurs.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, we wear a lot of hats with what we do.
But I love it.
It’s been a back to school frenzy at our house, and I’m not sure the dust will settle for a while.
Though things aren’t quite as crazy for us this year as they were last {we were hauling it across town daily to complete our renovation – looking back, I’m pretty sure the only thing that got us through it was sheer determination, and family who totally helps us out}. So this year we’re so glad to actually breathe deep and be in the moment! Hurray for school and all things in-session… even if we weren’t quite ready for it!
The kids are big into keychains and goodies for their backpacks. So we decided to do an easy afternoon craft with them for these sweet little dino keychains.
Of course the boys could care less for the tassels, so these are more for Emerson and me. Malone was happy to grab up a dino or two {after I removed said offending tassels}.
But here’s what you’ll need if you’d like to make your own:
• these adorable little plastic dinosaurs
• various shades of craft paint via your choice {we think glossy looks better} + brushes
• tassels of various colors
• little screw eye rings
• keychains + lobster clasps
• wire connector for charms – this will help you attach your tassels
• jewelry pliers – may help with the wire connectors and getting them on the tassels
• a small drill bit + drill – {size all depending on which size screw eye rings you purchase – ours was the smallest available in a set}
Take your dinosaurs, and moving them to a paint-safe surface, give them a couple of fresh coats with a color of your choice.
We simply did it old school style, laying them out on a paper plate, and giving them a few coats before flipping them back over.
We chose colors that played well together, and stayed simple with the combos, but the possibilities are kinda endless! I think we may try one with gold polkadots, next. ;}
When they were dry, they were ready to go!
Next, we grabbed up a super tiny drill bit {the tiniest we could find in our case, that matched the screw eye rings we chose} and added a hole in the dinosaur. You have an option here to add a bit of glue to make it extra secure, but ours weren’t budging, so we left them as is.
Then we added them to the keychain + hook, along with the tassels with the help of the charm connector. Tada! All the pieces were put together and in place, and we had our simple key ring connection!
Emerson, funnily enough, chose the T-rex, who went right on her backpack.
And I chose the purple guy.
Because keychain twins and because all the cool moms have them this year.
Jk. I wear yoga pants because I’m lazy. Aintnobodygottimeforthat.
We thought you might enjoy these fun little concoctions, too, and just thought we’d share them here today!
This project is so simple, we should probs be embarrassed. But we’re not, so there’s that. ;} As always, let us know if you try them.
We’d love to see what you come up with.
Have an inspired day!
