With the changing weather it’s always fun to freshen up our homes. We’ve received a few questions lately about what we’d recommend – from big to small projects for your house and today we’re covering some of our faves. Without further ado, 5 changes for big character in your home!
1. 5 changes for big character in your home: The mantel
Mantels are a great place to start when it comes to an opportunity to add in character. It can be as basic as a simple paint job or an all-out overhaul.
But it’s an awesome opportunity to switch it up, and make it fresh.
Paint + art + accessories = win.
This one ended up being a total overhaul in our home, since it desperately needed an update from 1976. But we loved the changes that came our way!
Even our latest mantel creation was so worth it in our new addition – it’s a little higher in the cost department and included more details, but we do love the change that it brought into the space!
There’s an entire array of things on a scale from art, to a full-on overhaul. But the changes are worth it as an anchor in a space.
Check out our entire post on tips for a great mantel, here. — This one includes simple changes, too.
2. 5 changes for big character in your home: Ceilings
This is something we’ve taken on every time in the various stages of renovation at our house.
Goodbye, stamped 1976, hello 2020.
The ceilings are often the forgotten element of a room, and probably one of the biggest changes for your house when it comes down to the over all feel.
Add some planks. Add a color. It takes a little bit of elbow grease on the front end, but totally worth it. No regrets on our end for changing this over!
Planked ceilings will never go out of style, we say they’re a classic approach to ceilings since houses with them from the turn of the century, have so much charm.
We have an entire tutorial on it, here!

Not a budget buster, and a big change for those spaces!
3. 5 changes for big character in your home: Doors
The big changes are all in the smaller details.
That’s why we can’t recommend changing your doors enough, if they’re a little dated.
Once upon a time this was our situation, all throughout our house. And it needed a bit of an update.
Some were purchased from a local trim company, and some were hand-built by us.
It’s easy to add space in tight areas with the right design and hardware.
Yes, our house did undergo a huge renovation, so we get it that it wasn’t just the doors here. For argument’s sake, let’s pretend we just changed this space with doors and paint, contrasting it with the photo below. It would still make a big impact. So much character with smaller changes.
But reality dictated that the dirty old fan definitely had to come down. I’m not sure which gave me greater pleasure, pulling down the fan or painting over the red that burned my corneas in the kiddos’ room.

4. 5 changes for big character in your home: The Kitchen
And no, I’m not talking about entire overhauls. Our company has seen it all from simple changes to the big gut outs, but what we love are the ones that fit our clients best. Whether it’s big changes…
Or the smaller ones that bring in major character with a simple paint switch.
Investing a little into your most-used space of the house, is always a good idea to bring it up to date. This kitchen used a fresh coat of paint, new lights and a simple backsplash for its biggest changes. Big impact with smaller changes never get old.
And this kitchen overhaul saw fresh countertops, new lights and a fresh coat of paint on those cabinets. Our awesome clients also chose to update their hood in the kitchen…
We love how much it opened up {and updated!} the space!
5. 5 changes for big character in your home: Practical Storage Solutions
From expanding the closets to banquettes with storage {coming soon!} and great picks on all things bookcases, we love a good option for your home when it comes to letting it serve you well. It’s a great way to bring in big character that works hard. You probably saw our kiddo’s closet before, above. They have so much more storage now!
But areas like entryway pieces that can store all the things for a big family…
And clever storage in tight spaces are always a smart choice.
One thing you won’t regret is having your home work hard for you in smart ways.
No, not everything is going to be this dramatic. But we do love a nice change that works hard.
Be sure to check out our entire post on storage solutions here!
So what are some of your favorite ways to add big character to your home? We’d love to hear from you!
Bonus round: lights!
They’re a quick fix and a great way to update those ceiling boob conundrums you may have hanging around. You’ll probably see great examples of those in almost all the photos above. But we think that deserves a post of its own…
