As the parent of older kids ( 27, 25, 24, 21 and 12) I can say that we absolutely loved the meal plan on our last trip. As several others said, I'm not sure if we saved that much money but the convenience was worth every penny. Although we spend most of our trip together there are also times we split up and having a meal plan made it so much easier for all of us to eat/snack whenever we wanted.
It's a little difficult to pay for the whole thing up front but boy it's nice to not have to pull out money every time someone wants an ice cream or a drink. It changed the emphasis of our trip from "what are the cheapest things on the menu?" to "what are the most expensive things on the menu so we can get the most for our money?"
We used the quick service plan so there was not a lot of planning ahead for table service reservations, with a few exceptions. Our kids still love to meet the characters but the character meals have lost their appeal as they have gotten older. We are looking forward to Be Our Guest on our trip this May though!

Very true and the wait even with reservations can be long in the evenings. I have to add my least favorite Character meal was at Epcot in Sweden. (not sure the name of the restaurant) the princesses were amazing the food was awful.

Wow this post is jam packed. I think we have eaten at nearly every place listed lol. The last time we went we ate at about 3 different places that had characters. Pricey but it was really worth it. (my hubby is really in to the food) . We are off to Disneyland in a week which is a whole new adventure. We've been to Disney World about 4 times but never to Disney Land so I'm super excited to see the difference. Thanks for all the great tips and I'll report back on "DL" if you'd like lol

We've done WDW with and without dining plans. I really love the convenience of having everything already prepaid and not having to think about the cost and it can be a great value if you are big on the character or other top tier dining options. We've done a few of those and always love them. Our third and most recent trip we decided to skip the dining plan and we saved around $600. We didn't do a table service meal every night but we don't feel as though we missed out. We never went to bed hungry. SO MUCH FOOD!! One little tip I will share is that if you aren't using a dining plan, consider doing a table service meal at lunch instead of dinner. The menu is usually the same but the price can be a little less. Quick list of our favorites: Be Our Guest, Mama Melrose, Biergarten, Tusker House, Via Napoli

we love the dining plan! we may not buy as much food as we get with the plan, but i like being about to order whatever we want, not just the cheapest thing (for example we might eat a lot more burgers because they are $2 cheaper than the yummy crab cake sandwich). another great tip is to go back to your hotel for lunch. there are not long lines, the food is better and you can relax by the pool. 2 of my kids have severe nut allergies and i am allergic to corn. i knew they would be great with the nuts, but most restaurants in the real world have no idea about corn. disney was amazing. when there was nothing for me to eat, the chef made me something. at ohana, the chef noticed that my daughter (no food allergies just very picky) was eating just bread. he asked her what she liked to eat and she said grilled cheese. he went back and made her a grilled cheese! boma (at animal kingdom resort) was the best buffet we have eaten at. so many choices, all delicious and you can go outside to see the animals. they made a special plate full of desserts for my allergy kids.

Love the reviews!! We took our kids in November and I have been dying to plan our next trip! #firstworldproblems
I love Via Napoli in Italy at Epcot. Which my youngest calls Apricot. The care and attention the servers and chefs pay at every Disney restaurant we ate at was epic. They never fail to impress.
