Hey guys! Today we’re thrilled to be sharing how to make these diy monogrammed keychains! They’re perfect for back to school. Our younger kiddos have often informed us over the years that it’s all about that backpack bling. So from souvenirs to one of a kind finds, they always love adding keychains to their backpacks for the school year.
We thought this was a great opportunity to try making a one of a kind find for them. Behold, the diy monogrammed keychains!
It’s a fun mix of easy swirly colors, along with any other accents you wish to add. We love the idea of all the possibilities for all things backpacks! Just a fun chance for something personalized.

diy monogrammed keychains: Getting started
Getting started, you’re going to roll out that Sculpey clay.
We recommend preheating your oven per their instructions, working on a non-stick surface.
Once the clay is to a doable thickness {ours was about 1/3 an inch?} use your cookie cutter. Ours was the 2.5 inch in diameter.
Remove the excess clay around it, and using the end of your paintbrush, push a generous hole in the top. This is so you can attach it later.
Do as I say, not as I do, because this photo does not in fact, have the hole I just mentioned. ;}
I made a few, and this is the photo I added. But it’s easier to do it while placed in the cookie cutter.
Cut your letter of choice from your template, and place it in the center of your circle.
Using the end of a pencil or your pottery tools mentioned above, trace your letter.
When you’re finished, it should look like this.
Place your clay in the oven, and bake according to the directions.
Keep an eye on it, and make sure it doesn’t burn!
diy monogrammed keychains: make it colorful
We like to use acrylics in various colors, with water for a bit of a watercolor approach. It helps to use a little water, and a little color and mix the various hues as you go. Tada! A fun mixed combo of paints! Of course it can look any way that you like, but we love the way these ended up!
For the embellishments:
Take your yarn, fabrics, ribbon and anything else you want to add, and loop them over just like so.
Tie them at the top and cinch them at the top section as shown, securing that as well. So it has that tassel look.
Trim it up to make it even.
You can even cover the string with another piece of fabric so that it works.
And for the beads, we just did a pretty combo on copper wire to add, as well.
So many pretty possibilities!
And Malone, our little keychain connoisseur wanted a dinosaur.
So we gave this one a fresh lease on life with gold leafing paint. Isn’t he adorable? We simply attached an eye hook to his back and added him to the keychain. Winning!
These are some fun little combos and we love the final look with endless possibilities.
The kids love them!
Which one is your favorite? How would you customize it?
And of course as always, let us know if you try this – we’d love to see! Such a great rainy day activity!
Have an inspired day!
