A few weeks ago, we flew out to Dallas, and were issued a challenge: stain and style a deck with Thompson’s WaterSeal.
Of course we were all in… say the magic words “style” and we’re always in.
The spaces were a nice sized 10×12, and we were excited to add a little spring zing to the deck with a fun twist.
Thompson’s is a product my own family has trusted for years: I remember my dad staining our deck at my childhood home, and when I asked him what he was using, he responded with “Thompson’s WaterSeal”. I remember fully expecting actual seals a-la a three ring circus on our deck, and as I’m sure you can imagine my surprise when actual seals did not come included with the finished product. No balancing balls. No horned instruments. Not even a few clowns thrown in for fun. In retrospect, that would have been super creepy. Yes, I had a wild imagination as a child.
Years later, we’re still loving their product.
Our goal was to show a nice, realistic approach that people can use for spaces outdoors in need of a little privacy. We shared a little of that a few weeks ago, and you can read all about the simple how to, here.
We decided on a pretty little stain to liven up our deck: Maple Brown {in Semi-Transparent}

Is it just me, or is that water repellant the best thing ever when it’s on a fresh deck?
So here’s the before:
And the after:
We brought in some ambiance with these curtains and some copper pipes from our local home improvement store – a great affordable option for a custom look.
This outdoor sofa made it instantly cozy, and we loved layering it with pattern and color to bring the entire space to life. The navy blue pillows brought a great contrast with this fabric we used for some fun stripe and contrast. A little pillow added in here and a splash of magenta
We had a plain jane coffee table that we brought to life with a new finish and protected it for the outdoors with a combo of more Thompson’s, and a splash of outdoor paint on top. We loosely painted it for a distressed look, and then added some stripes with a touch of aqua and gold.
The fabulous garden basket is from The Painted Fox and added a splash of green.
We loved the cozy ambience a few little touches brought in: The plates and napkins are from target, purchased a few seasons ago. Complimented by some moscow mule mugs {They took a while to arrive because they ship from overseas but are available for a great discounted price on Amazon} and this fun planter from Ikea.
We threw in some coziness and greenery with more planters, along with these chairs for sitting space. {We love these so much, we just added them to our own backyard as our old ones had rusted out.}
The rug added another layer, along with this snazzy garden stool. It’s my fave.
If you kept up with us last week, you may know I’ll be needing another garden stool soon to replace our shattered one… {JK Jamin probably won’t let me own another. And we both may be having nightmares about garden stools for some time. PSA: don’t stand on them!}
We gave this lantern a facelift with some schoolhouse green spray paint, and these lights were the crowning jewel of a touch for the finished look.
Tada!
We love the look, and really wanted to bring it home with us!
No. really. You’re shipping it to us, right Thompson’s? I think it would go fabulously beside our hideaway!
Obligatory happy pose with cheesy faces. We love our glampy cabana! {Yes, I did write it again even though Jamin told me not to.}
Bring on spring!
We think this covered everything in the sources list… please let us know if you have any questions! We’d love to help in any way that we can!
Have an inspired day!

Love this! What a great idea with the curtains. We are about to restain our porch do you think we should sand it or just pressure wash it?

So pretty. Great job you 2. My deck is awful. No hope for just staining. Needs to be replaced. The decor is lovely.

This looks great! I bought those blue chairs last year from World Market, and I plan to use them outdoors with our “door” table this year. I haven’t purchased a glass top for my table because it’s just so expensive. Do you think I could possibly just use this Thompson’s Waterseal on it and not get a glass? I know the table would be uneven because of the panels, but do you think it would be protected enough?
By the way, good luck with the move!!
