It has been super rainy here the last few days. There were flash floods and even a little water in our basement. Wheeee!
As I’m writing this post, it’s our first sunny day in I don’t know how long. We’re hoping to open up the pool this weekend for the first extravaganza of the year so we’re soooooo ready for the sun. Is there such a thing as a sun dance?
No one really warned us about how rainy Seattle Nashville can be, and we were ready to load the Ark up… two by two.
So to pass the time, we decided to make some homemade bouncy balls. In a smaller home with three kids and two rabid dogs with nowhere to go, bouncy balls make everything better. It’s really an easy peasy science project that you can whip up in just a few minutes with the kids. A great little something to keep them busy for a while… and we just had to share here.
{We put up the dogs before playing with said bouncy balls + ignore the bath bomb shells in the photo below. We thought they would help shape them but it was easier just to roll them up by hand}
What you’ll need: {yields one bouncy ball}
On a protective surface, in a measuring cup, mix together: 1/2 cup of warm water + 1 TB Borax
In a separate container mix together: 1 TB cornstarch + 2 TB liquid glue + food coloring {for color of choice}
{You’ll also want stirring sticks/spoons + maybe some gloves}
When you’ve mixed you glue concoction together, use a spoon to add it to the warm water/borax mixture.
Stir it around for a few seconds, and it should harden.
Use your spoon to remove it, and let it dry for a second on the surface.
This is where the gloves come in handy, because I picked it up immediately and started rolling it into a ball. We recommend waiting for a few minutes until it has dried better, as the food coloring will make your hands look like an honorary member of the blue man group.
Roll it around into a ball, and you’re ready to play!
This is a super easy, quick little project that helps pass those rainy days – helpful hint: store them in a bag, and reform when they start to lose their shape. This recipe is like a firmer silly putty. But it still makes for lots of fun.
As always let us know if you try it…
