Hello lovely friends! First things first: If you can’t get enough of my incessant ramblings here, we’re super excited to announce that our first article for Country Living is up on their site today. I had a few picks regarding all things watercolor and unique gift ideas for Christmas. The inner artist in me couldn’t resist this topic-So check it out!
Today, I thought I’d jump back into the swing of things by talking about a little ornament idea I had the other day.
I guess it’s no secret by now that I love stars in our decor… especially around Christmas.
These little beauts are the perfect project if you’re looking for a rainy afternoon kind of idea, and convert nicely into a garland or mobile as well, if you like. Here’s how we did it.
You can use our star template, by clicking on this link, here.
Printed and cut, I used this as my guide to trace onto some crafting foam. I used a medium thickness, so that the star didn’t curl on me, but it’s just a basic crafting foam you can find at any of your local craft stores. This is also the same basic process, you can find for our feathers, here.
Once they were cut, I coated them with a dark grey on both sides. When those were dry, I put a white coat on top. If there are mess ups, the beauty of it all is that you can add grey lines with your brush to cover up those mess ups. (You can cut up your star to use as a guide. I eyeballed it, so no pressure for perfection, because these angles can be tricky, but oh so pretty.)
Once those were dry, we used some metallic paint (left over from our fairytale pumpkins) to go over each star lightly, for a touch of glimmer.
For the ornament version, you can loop a bit of twine (I loved the red and white for a more festive appeal-or even jute for a rustic look) on the back. And before we knew it, we had a star covered tree!
The kids love it. They even made their own painted (rainbow!) versions of the stars. But they quickly added it to the decor in their own rooms. It’s a fun little rainy afternoon project.
As always, let us know if you try it! Happy creating and have an inspired day!

What a precious idea. Love it. I’m off to hop over to Country Living to read all about your wonderful (no doubt) gift ideas. I can’t wait to see.

I adore this. I love stars as well. They make such a great classic pattern. I want to try these this weekend. And of course you’re writing for Country Living I can’t wait to see what else you guys do, and who snatches you up-if they are smart!

What type of tree do you have? I love its girth and the way the limb stick out far even at the top!
We have traditionally cut our own tree down from a local tree farm (check it out here- http://pluswyattlee.blogspot.com/2012/10/fo-real-tree-that-is.html). Sadly, this year we’re going to put up my fake classroom tree at the house, since we’re splitting our time at home and in our RV (while we’re working on our new house on the weekends!).
Love the stars and will be trying to make them next week, I think!

I love them! We have mostly just balls on our tree.. well at least we will when I finally decorate it! ha! I think something like this would really add some fun interest. I love how you finished them, keeping them a little rustic and imperfect.
