When I was little, my parents took a trip to the Bahamas. And when they came back, one of our souvenirs was sea glass. They brought us each back a bottle of it. They’d hunted it down and I remember being mesmerized by it. The glass was like nothing I’d ever seen before, and the idea of the sand making it soft and pretty over time was hauntingly beautiful to me. So when we took a little trip to Punta Cana, {our first getaway together in seventeen years, just a few weeks ago} we decided to collect our own sea glass.
JK. We didn’t find any. Just lots of seaweed. But I was feeling kinda tropical when I came up with this little idea.
And since I’ve always loved the idea of sea glass, I was thrilled to cook something up that reminded us of our trip.
The first story would’ve been cooler, but when life doesn’t serve up any sea glass, you improvise. That’s basically a metaphor for life. You’re welcome for the deep stuff today.
When I was done, the kids held the same wonderment around this sea glass… Our middle ooed and ahhhed over the wreath and told me she loved the ‘crystals’. ;} There is something mesmerizing to a child about sea glass. Heck, it’s mesmerizing to adults, too.
The pups were less than impressed.
Here’s what you’ll need for a sea glass summer wreath:
• Sea glass
– I particularly liked the hues in this stuff – it didn’t look cheesy or like something from a craft store, even though it is. {Guilty.} I’d recommend two packs.
• Wreath form
– Sea glass can actually get heavy. So a sturdy wreath form is important. I also liked this shape for a more modern look.
• Twine + glue gun
First, I wrapped a little jute across the top to create a “hanger”.
This made a place to attach the ribbon I used to hang it with, later.
Just anchor with hot glue, and wrap around.
Tada! You’re ready to begin.
This is so basic, but I simply attached the sea glass as I went, with the hot glue.
Per usual, watch those fingers. I have a pretty blister after that little crafting event.
Simply cover the main flat part, and then wrap around the sides, adding as you go.
Clear out the “cobwebs” that the glue gun tends to leave behind, as you work.
Tada! You’re done!
I have this thing with glass, so I love the way it works oh so seamlessly on our closet/bathroom door!
This is an old stained glass window we sourced at the local flea market – You can see more in our kitchen…but we knew we wanted to use them somewhere. They’re old university windows from Boston circa late 1800’s. We built a barn door to fit this one, and the fabulous hardware is a-la artisan hardware – our very favorite barn door/hardware/creative source!
Just a fun little summer addition to remind us of our latest trip, and my childhood.
It’s funny how the little things can bring a smile to your face, and we loved keeping all these windows together in our house.
So that’s the easy peasy way to make a simple sea glass wreath!
As always, if you create one, we’d love to see.
Be sure to share with us.
And be sure to check out the time-lapse video below, because time lapse videos are oh so satisfying ;}
Have an inspired day!

This is so pretty! I love how easy it was to make and how you need just three things for it, yet, the result is simply stunning. Sea glass blue nuance is one of the best choices for summer decor because it makes any space more cheerful, fresh and optimistic and that’s precisely what your wreath is. Thanks for sharing the recipe on how to make it, I’ll definitely have to try it out!

This is so beautiful in its simplicity. I love ideas like this that cost very very little but have a stunning impact.
Now I know what to do with all the sea glass that I’ve been storing in my garage since we collected it one summer along the coast of Maine.

Found this post from a wreath group posting that Happy Housie was in. Your wreath is so sweet! Looks great on that amazing door. I had never thought of putting a wreath on a barn door! I’m off to see what other nifty things you’ve come up with.
