Lately, a lot of wonderful people have been contacting us with questions about the hutch and console table combo we built for the fabulous Ana White’s awesome book, The Handbuilt Home.
It was a super fun project and we had a blast working with Ana on this book. Have you gotten your hands on it yet? It’s ah-mazing! But here are a few of the fine tuning deats and questions that some of you have been asking about:
What did you use on the back? Those look like planks.
Instead of what the plans called for, we finished off the back of the hutch with alternating combinations of 1 x 2’s, 1 x 3’s and 1 x 4’s. We simply cut them to the appropriate lengths, and alternated them on the back.
What color stain is that, and how did you do it?
Topping each piece with a shot of Wood Conditioner (simply rub it on with any rag and wait for it to dry-this helps with uneven grain and blotchy finishes) we finished off the wood top and the backing with Minwax’s Early American. For the darker, alternating look, we simply kept going with additional coats until we reached our desired darkness on each piece.
What color is that on this piece?
For the main color itself, we used Benjamin Moore’s Calypso Blue. It’s my current favorite, and I absolutely adore the look. It’s super punchy and jewel-like. It’s the same color you see on our barn door, and handmade hideaway. If I could paint my entire house this color…I just might.
When the piece was dry, we lightly went over it again with a rag + stain for our tea stained look. To read more about that specific process and look, be sure to check out our post on painting furniture, here. Regarding hardware: we simply topped off the drawers with some simple pulls. They added that extra pop of contrast on the front.
And that’s it!
We hope this helps a little, and that you enjoy Ana’s wonderfully amazing book! Have you picked it up yet? What’s your favorite project you want to try for your home? If you build this, we’d love to see!
Happy building + have an inspired day!

Love the project. I just might have to try it. Her book is on my Christmas list already. Speaking of books, isn’t yours being released 10-29-12 not 8-29-12? Just a little typo perhaps, probably due to little sleep and mega caffeine withdrawals. š

Tennille…that ad has been up for three days. You are the first person to tell me. It also went through Jamin. I really can’t believe we missed it. I can’t tell you how incredibly frustrating that is… and thank you enough for telling me. THANK YOU. I have made so many mistakes this week! It’s ridiculous.

I wanted you to know that I was so inspired by the build and finish, that I had to find a piece to replicate it. After scoring this hutch at the local thrift store, I went about “handmade homing” it. Thank you so much for the inspiration; it’s one of my favorite transformations. š

Lovely color of this hutch. The stained back and top are super added touches that give it contrast. I am going to try and do one like this soon.
Thanks so much for sharing your creations!
