Happy fabulous day, wonderful friends! The super duper Kristin from The Hunted Interior is back today, to tell us all about her take on mixing patterns. ;} So without further ado…
I am pattern obsessed. I have never been scared to mix a print with another print, a stripe with a dot, a floral with an ikat… all I can say is “Bring It!” Prints and Patterns can bring a room to life whether they are colorful or tonal. They add interest.

While I am not the least bit fearful about getting all crazy with fabrics, I know that a lot of you are a tad timid in this area. I have come up with an equation of sorts that always seems to work when mixing patterns. It works with modern to traditional prints & everything in between. And the best part… you only have to remember three things. That’s right, only three!
G E O M E T R I C + O R G A N I C + S M A L L S C A L E
Really. That’s it. If you follow those three rules you will always have a cohesive look. And you can always mix and match if you only want to include two patterns instead of three.
Here are a few examples of my rule of pattern mixing…

I have tried to simplify this formula so many times, but have never been able to put it as simply as that…brilliant!

I love pattern mixing, but I am scared to try it. I’ve memorized the “sort of” rules, but every time I try to mix patterns, I just get jumbled up and afraid that I’v e missed the mark. Is this a problem for a lot of people?

I feel like it is most certainly a common dilemma! It always helps me to pick one main pattern to work off of and pull some of the main colors from it into my other fabrics that I’m mixing. Try and pick a larger scale pattern as the main one with several colors to accent. š Happy fabric-ing!

Quite possibly the most helpful post I’ve ever read. I am in the middle of redecorating our home office and have two patterns in the room thus far. After reading your post I am more comfortable that I am on the right track! I have a geometric hanging shade and floral print curtains, now I just need a small scale pattern to bring it together. Thanks for the help! : )

This is killer. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stalled out decorating a room because I can’t get the textiles to work right. I just spent far too much time this weekend wandering around the home dec area at Joanns trying to figure out what “goes together.” I hate things too matchy-matchy, but that just resulted in my rooms looking messy.
This formula is PERFECT and so easy to remember. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
