Awe yeah, local yocals! It’s the post you’ve been waiting for!
We hope. {???}
I think this is the post that makes me a little nervous because I have to officially commit. (Side note : If you stare at that word commit long enough, it doesn’t look real. Like it’s misspelled for comet or something.) Not that I haven’t already committed to said yard sale, but this makes it real in the land of all things purging. As in, I have one weekend left to go through and decide. I’ve been making my list, but soon things will be sorted through, placed, priced, and ready to go. I am committing to this act.
I am a yard sale perpetrator.
For some reason, it’s not hard for me to part with that mess in the junk drawer. Or the stuff in the corner of our pantry. This sale is hard for some reason. And I’ve put the purging off for many issues : I’d rather play with my kids or snuggle in for a movie than dig through difficult piles and feel like a contender for hoarders. Deep down, I’m assigning some well-meaning love to some future use in a home I don’t live in to what I feel is one of a kind that I might have some use for, later. Therein lies the key word. Later.
Complicated runon sentence much? So is my life. With all of this stuff I’m saving for later.
We have an entire attic and storage unit left of would-be decor and sentimental items that I’m still holding on to for some reason. And it’s time to let go. In short, I’m being ridiculous.
I’m ready to be free.
So, we will start this week …and finish for the upcoming yardsalepalooza. (5.18.13). I want this sucka off like a bandaid. We’ve sorted and donated a lot of the little things, but at this super duper ultra fun yard sale, you’ll find it a bit of a celebration of sorts. We’re letting go of some things that are great finds and one of a kind pieces to live happy lives in happy homes.
Art. Furniture. Decor.
Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll find there. (Not everything in these photos, but I think you get the basic idea.)
We will make it fun. Think of this as a fun sale. It’s not exactly junk. But maybe I’m biased.
Here’s the part we’re the most excited about. It’s something that has been weighing on our hearts. This is the part where I shuffle my feet and stare at the floor awkwardly while my ears grow warm. Because I’m weird and don’t like to discuss money. This entire movement has been beyond humbling and a total eye opener for us. So being completely honest, purging our home is a little more than just about cleaning out our home and doing something good for our own family. We want to give away a percentage of our earnings. Let me be very clear that we’re not announcing this to toot our horns. If I wanted to toot my horn, I would do cartwheels and talk about what a great chocolate cake I make from a box. We thought this might help give you guys a bit of an incentive to stop by if you live anywhere near us. Or if you know anyone who does, to share it. This won’t be your typical yard sale.
We felt that we should give back in another way. 35% of our earnings on Saturday {May 18th} will also be going to Agape.
From their site : At AGAPE, we are about one thing. Service. We serve mothers-to-be who want their babies to be placed into loving homes. We serve families who want to share their love with a child. And we do both of these things by offering crisis pregnancy counseling, adoption, foster care, and outreach programs with unconditional love.
I can’t think of a better cause.
That, and cupcakes.
So here’s the deats:
When : Saturday, 5.18.13 • 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. {CST}
Items will be clearly marked for you and your awesome friends to peruse!
Where : We reside in Montgomery Alabama. If you want our addy, we’ll be emailing it to you the week before. If you’re interested, sign up with the email [email protected] and please put Local Yocal Yard Sale in the title. Because that sounds hill billy-ish and fun. We will be sending out a “blast” with our address next week.
See what I did there? I called it a blast because it will be.
What not to bring : No stabby weirdos, please. Aint nobody got time for that. Oh, and please don’t judge our garage. We’re in the process of redoing it as well.
What else we will have : Cupcakes. I just think no yard sale is complete without cupcakes.
* updated to add : in case of bad weather, we will update you with a new date for the yard sale within 48 hours.
You in? Consider this a yardsalepalooza with more of a fun sale vibe {read: awesome fun finds – at least we seem to think so – for a great cause} We can’t wait to see ya there! Tell your friends!
Think you might be able to stop by? We’d love to hear from you. Leave us a comment so we can take a head count for cupcakes! ;} Have an inspired day, y’all!

Ok I need to know what exactly it is you’re selling from these pictures. That way I can call dibs. š I’m sort of loving the red bookcase (that would look fab-u in my bedroom).
ashley @ the handmade home says
Ha! I grabbed what I could find of each item… and we have so much more in storage! ;}
Ashley Potvin says
Hi! I live in Selma & am hoping to get to come over to the sale! š Very excited!
Ashley Potvin says
Just curious if the ‘angel wings’ are going to be on sale? & how much? I would love to add these to my personal collection!
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Ashley! Sorry that was a photo of our reclaimed barn wood I was featuring, and just had to jumble up some photos to give people a basic idea. I am holding on to the wings. We discussed the concept of a pre sale, but it would just be too much to manage for us. What you see in these photos is not everything, either. ;} We have much more in storage. We would love to see you there!
Ashley Potvin says
Thanks a ton!! I am really looking forward to it!! š
Alli says
Ah. MA. Zing. š

If only the sale was a couple of weeks later! We’ll be driving through the area to Destin. I know it will be a huge success!
thefolia says
Kudos to you and your family. My children love garage sales where they get to be lil entrepreneurs at their lemonade stand. You will feel wonderful and much much lighter after it is all done. Your thoughtful donations to Agape I am sure will be greatly appreciated which will even make you feel more special. Courage!
Crista says
I am not in your area š But it looks like fun! I always love garage sales, only problem is that I go to enough of them then I have to have a garage sale!
Wendy says
Looks fabulous! Wish I could come, but I live in New Jersey. š Anyway, best wishes for a wonderful day!
Stacy P says
While I don’t live anywhere near Montgomery, I wish you all the best with your Yard Sale! And…thank you for song bombing me with the “Ain’t nobody got time for that”.
You’re the best.
Tamie says
Man would my husband kill me if I said I was taking a road trip from Minnesota to come check out your garage sale!
Sara says
What’s your yard sale sign look like and what all did you do to advertise as much as possible? I’m about to have one on May 18 and want to make the most of it. I’m in Little Rock, so no competition. š
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Sarah! Even if you were nearby, people could come to both. ;} I haven’t yet. I have put it on the blog, and I will probably have some signs the day of… and maybe craigslist… finalizing all of that this week! ;} I’m thinking poster board and markers and tape – old skool! ;} Yep. I just spelled it that way.
Beth says
What about The Bulletin Board? It sure brings a lot of those “early birds”!
ashley @ the handmade home says
haha I know! Maybe I won’t mention it anywhere. ;}
Crys says
I wish I could be there! Let me know if you happen to have a sale up here… in South Carolina…. r maybe I should just admire from afar….
Kristy says
Hi! My family and I live in Millbrook and we would love to come by your yard sale! You have inspired in so many ways to decorate my home my style…I love your blog!
jen says
I wrote this off as a ‘would have gone if I lived closer’ event, but when you mentioned proceeds going to Agape, you caught my heart! We have just begun the adoption process…..if I could find someone crazy enough to drive 16 hours with me from New York, I would be there! I’m sure it will be a grand success.
ashley @ the handmade home says
Awe, congratulations, Jen. That’s amazing! So excited for you.
Donna says
Yes! I am local and I WILL be there! Wouldn’t miss it. I am bringing my truck and hoping to bring home some of that fabulous reclaimed barn wood you are selling.
ashley @ the handmade home says
I look forward to seeing you there! ;}
Beth Garland says
I’m planning to be there, representing the Pike Road/Cecil demographic! I love your style and especially your “heart”! Soooo looking forward to it!
Jessa @ Raehaus says
Glad to see your working on purging. I know my mom and I have been trying to eliminate clutter this past year after combining homes, but it’s been a battle since she has so much stuff. Though it makes it harder when she doesn’t want to just give it away so we can have some sanity back. Our goal was to join our community yard sale, however we just found out last week that it’s this coming weekend, which we are not ready for and it’s supposed to rain hard.
hopefully, the next plan would be to have it very very soon, but May is already booked and June * July are hard with the warm weather and vacations.
Carol Morris says
In the picture of the chalk board and window pane, my question is what is on the panes of glass? Is this something that you created? Can you take a picture of the window?
Thanks,
Carol
Margaret says
Love a good yard sale !!! Please tell me where.
Annie-ban annie says
Oh! I wish I could come! I am several miles west of you in Dallas. I love garage sales. Have done 2 or 3 and I can appreciate your sentiments about the work they take and the bittersweet feelings of parting with your stuff– the stuff you know could be useful someday and the stuff you also got at a garage sale that “YOU JUST KNOW WOULD BE DARLING SOMEWHERE!” LOL. I have come to realize that I live in 2 worlds- the world of buying things and discovering finds and the world of purging and giving away. Push – pull, yin- yang, in-out. We are in good company though: Ecc 3:6 says there is a time to keep and a time to cast away. Apparently King Solomon also had to deal with his own stuff. I like your good cause though and hope you have a super time and make new friends.
P.S. my real name doesn’t end in “ba nannie” š
Alison says
Soooo…you have some cute stuff. Would it be weird if I camped out in your front lawn…you know…just like those post-Thanksgiving-black-Friday sales??? I’m kidding, But I do plan on being there promptly at 8:30.
ashley @ the handmade home says
haha! do it.
Heidi says
I’m just a bit west of you (ahem, San Diego) but if I lived closer I would so be there with a u-haul. Have a great yard sale!
