We’re so excited about the sneak peek we get to show you today. Honestly guys, we’re not even sure where to start with this one, or what to call it. So this will fondly be known as, the Churchill project. And we’re sharing this phase with you now because we’re nerds and think it’s interesting, but we also really want to give you a feel for the space before we share the reveal, in the near future.
Total side note, but if this window in the photo below disappears, it wasn’t us. I may or may not shop their house in my mind. Shhhhh.
When Debra contacted us about changing over their garage to a multi-functional space, we were more than thrilled to jump in.
What we love the most about working with clients, is that sometimes, they’re also readers. When we came to their house to discuss the fun project they had in mind, we loved seeing a version of our original loft bed. We adore seeing projects in other people’s homes! We couldn’t wait to get started on this one.
So basically, here’s what the garage looked like before we began.
Every other garage in America. Here’s an overhead view of what it is now, with the basic layout.
It’s a very simple, unassuming space, but they’re ready to make it so much more. This space is the most multi-functional space we’ve designed from nothing so far, and we’re pretty pumped about the entire project. Here’s an overhead view of the magnificence that is to come
So you can see, this space has a lot of uses, all in one. We’ll be discussing them one by one as we share different aspects of the project. But they were looking for a family space that can also be an Airbnb. They wanted to include a butler’s pantry to expand on their space, along with an inset cubicle so that they have a small storage area for their family. They also wanted a laundry room {their washer and dryer are a part of their kitchen now, and that will be a total game changer for freed up space} along with an additional bath and sleeping/lounging quarters. We’ll be including a bar with open shelves so that visitors have a bit of a kitchenette to use, and ample outside storage for the family. In the future, it will also be an area for their growing children. So you can see the multifunctional space aspect, along with something that can really grow with their family to enjoy. Oh, and did we mention there will be a loft? This space is going to be so much fun!
Here’s a little bit of it in-progress with the beginnings of all things demo.
You can see how the garage had an entire ceiling dividing the awesome attic space from the rest of the garage. It was great for storage but also had so much more potential than just that. Once this came down, it was kind of crazy, the amount of space they had above the existing garage. Luckily, the family still has plenty of viable storage in their attic, so they’re not losing too much that they can’t utilize in other ways.
So we’ve raised the floor to match the rest of the house, as it previously had quite a step down into the garage. Underneath here will now be extra storage for gardening tools and things like bikes.
We also added an additional wall against the outside wall, so that there will be more insulation. We can now utilize the outer walls for plumbing. As you can see in the plans above, this will officially free up the far outside walls for a better layout.
And here’s a little progress so far!
Our entire team has been hard at work with demo and the initial steps for setting it all up. It’s looking so good!
And because we had so much going on to meet their needs, we decided to do a simple + quick mockup, to show what the vaulted ceiling and loft with multiple spaces and rooms will look like.
Minus the beams to save space but this was to give Debra and her family a good idea of the entire layout. We have the before above, and the “after” below.
You can’t see the bathroom, but it will be to the right. The sitting area to the immediate left, and bedroom area where the sleeping alcove is. The loft of course, on top, and you can see a quick bar area {with my wonky shelves} that we sketched out. The area to the right of the ladder will house the butler’s pantry and cubicle area, before you step into the laundry. The grey door leads to their existing kitchen.
We’re in the process of putting together tile selections and finalizing bathroom designs {they’re redoing their children’s bath as well, so we have more on that coming up} as you read this, and we can’t wait to share the next steps. It’s to the fun part with tile and fixtures and so much more!
Meanwhile, walls have gone up, insulation is in process, a little more electrical and drywall!
Stay tuned… we can’t wait to share more of this fun project. Hurray for another basement/garage conversion!
Have an inspired day!

Oooh! So neat! The loft and ceiling idea is very smart. That is a TON of uses for one space. You all are never really afraid of a challenge, are you? Loving it all and can not wait to see more!
