the space maker: ideas for a kids room in a tight space

When Sarah contacted us for a collaboration on some work in their home, we were more than happy to step up to the plate. And starting specifically with our very favorite spaces, a child’s room. If you haven’t noticed, they’re our very favorite.

Sarah and her husband are going through a redo of their home, in some major ways. They are rearranging spaces to work with the great existing footprint that they have, and are in the process of allowing for more space in creative solutions. We absolutely love it when people think outside the box for their homes. {They’re kind of in good company with us once we get started oh so soon!} So we were more than happy to put our heads together for a few good ideas to help everything stretch a little further. Here’s the existing space for their daughter, Margot.

Right now, it’s a nursery. Margot needs some ideas that will grow with her in a new big girl room. And right now, it’s kinda tight at 7 feet 10 inches wide and 11 feet 8 inches long. But with lots of charming potential. So they were interested in knocking out the closet in the space above it, to allow for a little more space in the room. Here’s the existing floorplan.

We drew up a quick mockup to share what her space will look like with the expansion, as a few inches can go a long way. Here’s what we’re thinking:

Then, we carefully read through all the challenges they sent our way, along with requests for the space. We always try to choose investment pieces, as well as great thrifty or diy options to best fit the space, so that they all come together to be both visually pleasing and offer some great space-conscious /organization solutions as well. We want the best ideas possible for each space for our clients. So without further ado, here’s some ideas for her space!

Right now, it is kind of limited, and while it will still be small, it’s also charming in a really fun way. Along with the ideas we came up with, it should be an awesome room for her in the future. If they have space in their drywall, they mentioned doing some pocket doors in the room. We would love to see that, as it would open up the room so much more, and allow more liberty with her furniture arrangements in the space and any future additions as she grows. Those existing doors are so charming and we love them, but we also think they can come up with some equally charming solutions in pocket doors, as well.

So without further ado, here’s a few ideas!

1. The bed

We’d love to see a built in option for the new alcove {below}. We’re showing a ‘demo’ bed in the actual inspiration board, but visually, a built in would be a great option for a smoother space flow and definitely give her her own fun little alcove in the room. A built in option for this room would offer space under the bed for storage, as well as bookshelves on each side – as Margot is a lover of books – a gal after my own heart ;}.

It’s really optimizing the space in that area, while also freeing up the floor with what she has left in her room.

Just a similar idea with an inspiration image  – a rough idea with what we’re thinking with the way it would all come together with the bookshelves in her little alcove-minus that window.

Hardware {9}

If you build the bed, we’d love to see this fun brass hardware for the drawers. It’s the little things ;}

2. Paint, Wallpaper, Sconces,

We’d love to see the bed trimmed out in a soft, crisp white, to contrast nicely with a pretty grey on the walls. For a touch of whimsy that will grow with her, we adore this wallpaper. {As shown in the bed mockup}. We love the sconces but they also come in a single option if the others are too bright/much for such a small space.

3. Bedding

White may seem counter intuitive, but it’s actually easier to clean when you can just throw it in the wash. My daughter has a quilt from here + it has held up wonderfully over the years. It just gets softer over time. We love this soft white quilt to build off of as a solid base. A peek of these sheets underneath keep it fresh. And we love layering some pillows like these with versatile textures and colors for that hint of young fun that can easily grow with her. We also included one of our fabrics here that bring in a nice geometric shape to contrast with all the organic, as well. A throw like this would top it all off.

4. Comfy Chair

We chose a classic grey armchair + love the pretty look for her room, especially when paired with another fun pillow.

5. Rug + 6. Chandelier

The rug in soft colors and simple stripes is like that final piece {next to the chandelier of course} to pull the space together. They’re available in a variety of sizes here, so I do recommend measuring out the space and choosing which one you like best with all the elements. We always add the rug last for the perfect fit.

7. Art + Clock

Since her parents mentioned she loves books and animals, we wanted to give a small nod to both. We know they’re happy with her art, and we love it, too. But we couldn’t help but also throw in one of our favorite quotes or this adorable alarm clock for a touch of that whimsy that can grow with her. {Which I think I will now buy for my own kids} ;D

Also, I meant to include this, but be sure to check out some baskets from here for a great way to round up some of her stuff in the future.

We rounded up a green lowboy, side table, brass mirror + your pouf to complete the ‘look’ but love the way they can all pull together for a solid vibe in her room. {8, 10, 11} If you throw in some vintage children’s books for a little more of that classic, vintage color, you’re good to go on her space!
