Welcome to The Handmade Home, by Jamin and Ashley Mills. One day we're young and carefree, falling in love in college. The next, we woke up with three kids, two rescue pups and a money pit of our own. Here in our little corner of the www, is where you'll find our adventures in running our family business and working together. I think of the three of them now, chasing fireflie

I think of the three of them now, chasing fireflies at dusk in our yard each summer. All sticky with ice cream-smeared faces, breathless giggles and chlorine hair. They don't really chase them anymore, because babies don't keep. But those memories are priceless.

When you're on the other side of parenthood at the beginning, with less sleep and constant diligence, even brushing teeth feels like a battle. It feels like this will last forever; that you have all the time in the world.

Only you wake up one morning and realize suddenly, you don't.

Right now, we're on the cusp of something sweet. That place in between the final week of school and the first week of summer. Just like everyone else, this imperfect life hasn't always turned out exactly as we hoped or expected. But we remind ourselves that we've put our energy and time into the right places so that the next season is a really great one, in all the good ways that truly matter.

We have a senior, and we were just prepping him for preschool. I want to bottle these moments up if only for a moment, like those little fireflies.

Here's to cherishing all the little things. Here's to the in between. More on our site today, if you find yourself in the in between, too.

I snapped this photo a little over a year ago, when driving through the countryside of Franklin. It was so striking, we had to stop. While it's a gorgeous backdrop of all things retro Americana that I adore, it's also a beautiful reminder that freedom isn't free.

It can be easy to take the everyday for granted if we're not mindful. So it's important to pause and appreciate the seemingly mundane things, both big and small, that were paid for with a price we can't even really begin to comprehend.
Today we're so very grateful to all those who paid such a price and we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day.

After 👏🏻 Before...A few new additions for our front in our summer landscaping project, like these adorable self-watering window boxes from @flowerwindowboxes + peonies from @natchezglenhouse are small additions with huge {present and future} impact. They're some of the things we're most excited about! It's the summer of baby plants and we can't wait for this entire little garden to fill in beautifully over time.

In a world of commercial break magic, and instant gratification on social media, this is just a little reminder that good design doesn’t happen in a day.

Our own fixer upper home has taken years, and is still a part of a little story, slowly unfolding. It’s the antithesis of perfection and that presto change-o people are always looking for. Behind these before and afters we love to share, the old adage is true: blood, sweat and tears made it happen. We’re also doing life in the meantime, just like everyone else. So every time you see a space we share, know that it included months of design work, teams of good people, great partnerships with incredible brands and lots of patience from everyone based on timing, permits, and an endless barrage of curve-ball variables.

We just wanted this to serve as a gentle reminder when it comes to your own home. In case you feel flooded with perfect images everywhere from social media to magazines. We’re certainly not wizards, and sometimes we’re at the mercy of sheer fate when it comes down to a space we are lucky enough to share here. Just like an artist can become lost in their painting when they stand too close, it’s good to take a step back every once and a while to breathe, and shift your perspective.

There is always so much more to the story. And that’s where the good stuff really is.
