Need a unique, last minute gift idea for that special child (or maybe even random third stepchild twice removed who will be showing up on Christmas morning with Cousin Eddie) in your life?
I made these puppies this afternoon, as a stocking stuffer for my babes. Do you know what that means? {No that doesn’t mean they will fill up the entire stocking. We don’t literally stuff our stockings so much as set things out and make them look pretty, (surprise) unless it’s an obligatory rite of pasage orange amidst the sea of soon to be vanquished chocolate.} But to my point: It means it was a coordinated nap day. That’s right. High fives.
And thought I’d share how, with you… you who may be exasperated with the mass produced toy aisles of freak-get-out-of-my-personal-space-I-don’t-want-to-fight-you-for-the-scary-narcissistic-dancing-mickey-mouse-while-you-pummel-me-and-crush-what’s-left-of-my-christmas-spirit-nonsense.
I made mine from that stuff they make t-shirts out of. {I feel really dumb right now because my mind totally blanked, but if you have no clue what technical name I’m talking about, just go to the fabric store and ask. They’ll totally know.} Anyway, it comes in an abundance of colors, it’s soft, and most importantly, it doesn’t shred. SO, you totally don’t even have to hem these suckas, unless you just enjoy sewing and want to. Mine is the lazy person’s version, if you didn’t notice. No hems required.
Bust out the fabric
eyeball, and cut according to your child’s height. (mine are way too big, but alas, that is the beauty of dress up garb. No one cares.)
Then cut an additional strip. Again, eyeball. Something about like this should work nicely.
I did the same with all my additional fabrics. I saved the excess to make some bandannas or masks from, on a rainy day. We’ll be all kinds of nacho libre up in here with layered undies. WORD.
take your fabric, and give it a generous flip. This will be where you thread your extra fabric strip through for the cape top, to tie around your child’s neck.
Pin it (Of course, I don’t think I need to say this, but because it ties at the throat, save this for age appropriate children, and supervise always…good story.) And run it through the sewing machine. (you can also hand stitch)
thread your strip though, and cinch. It now has that cape-like look.
Tada! Your caped crusader kick crime’s bootay super hero insta-gift is now ready…for the fun part.
You can use a monogram, a hand stitched and cut felt applique, fabric paint, iron on….the possibilities, once again, are endless.
Of course I broke out my handy dandy silhouette again, along with this 80’s fabulous glitter iron on paper.
and layer for layer designed my own little super hero logo.
here’s keeping my fingers crossed that they love them come Saturday morning!
happy easy peasy cape creating!
