The super fun Erin from Two Story Cottage is back with us today with some great Valentines Project ideas with kids! The model is pretty adorable, so be warned. ;} Without further ado:
The end of January is upon us. It will be nice to get a breather from all of those New Year’s expectations. Sometimes it feels a little dismal to focus on all of the improvements we could make. Embracing the imperfect seems like a good mantra for February.
Luckily, I have a couple of easy Valentine’s projects that will make even my Type A friends breathe a sigh of relief. I say that as a former card-carrying member of that group.
Washi tape hearts are customizable and so easy the little ones can contribute. I like to get my kids involved when I do anything crafty. Fine motor work concealed as something fun is a win-win in my book.
Materials: card stock, glue, scissors, and several varieties of washi tape; 4 by 6 frames
I purchased everything from Target although I already had most of the tape. The 4 by 6 frames are only $2 by the way. Hot deal alert! Also, you can find the card stock in the scrapbooking aisle.
-Draw or trace a heart on your 4 by 6 card stock. We used a cookie cutter.
-Cover it in washi tape. Don’t be afraid to go crazy.
-Cut out the heart. If you can’t see the lines you can lightly trace over again.
Tip: It is important to tape first and cut second. That is what gives seamless, finished hearts. It is almost like cutting out something that has been laminated.
Glue it on a 4 by 6 sheet of card stock. Throw it in the frame and boom, you are good to go.
My children LOVED this project. I mean it was kind of ridiculous and almost insulting because I have tried much more complicated things that were not this big of a win. Also, grasping that tape really does strengthen those little pincer muscles that are needed for handwriting. The best part? As a mom, you can just let them go. You don’t have to cringe when they are doing it “all wrong” or fix anything. My 3 year old son made one that was crazy covered in tape and it looked really edgy when it was all cut out.
Another fun project for the small set is making a pom pom heart on card stock. The materials are the same but swap the washi tape for a bag of pom-poms.
Trace the heart, fill with glue, and stick puffballs on until the cows come home. Or Dad anyway. My daughter loved this and kept at it while I cooked dinner and fed the dog and all of those other things that happen between 5:30 and 6:00. My son may or may not have been throwing pom-poms. We’ll blame it on the witching hour.
Forget making a pattern or spreading the colors evenly. Just go with the “whatever” method and it will turn out just as it should. Bright, colorful, and fun.
If you are fancy, you can spend $10 on a shadow box frame. Cheap Mamas like me can just take the glass out of a regular frame and you are set.
Display your kids artwork in a prominent area and they will be beaming with pride for the next month. Your heart will feel good, I promise.

What a great project with washi tape. These hearts allow for limitless creativity! I’m going to do a couple of them for some friends for Valentine’s Day. I think the pom-pom hearts are adorable. We’re having our 3 young grandsons this weekend. I think I’m going to get a bag of pom-poms and help them all make one to give to Mommy for Valentine’s Day! Very creative, thank you for sharing.
