It was circa 2007 long before we’d found our design style or perhaps before I had relinquished control and freed myself from the bondage of builder’s all-of-the-things brown…that we started a family tradition.
It’s one of those traditions born on a whim, that doesn’t cost you much, but that will stay with your family forever. The kind that they will pass on to their kids. A tradition so fun and simple, you can’t help but do it again and again…
Birthday pancakes.
It was also before I had come to grips with my 10th grade teacher being right, that I would use chemistry later in life: Notice the yellow Bisquick container. The Shame, I know.
But as they say cooking is all about feeling and baking is all about chemistry, dang you periodic tables. You won this round.
The tradition continues today, but we’ve moved on from the yellow container and apparently our shirts too. I guess the Birthday boy gets his way.
Today we wanted to share our tradition and our simple buttermilk pancake recipe. I promise the taste will make you fall in love with chemistry all over again. Well, maybe just not have nightmares about it.
Here is what you will need for about 10-12 pancakes.
• 2 cups all purpose flour • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk • 2 eggs • 3 TBSP white sugar • 1/2 TBSP salt • 3 TBSP unsalted butter • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp baking powder
First, melt your butter and then combine it in a large bowl with the buttermilk, eggs, salt, sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Whisk it until everything is blended. Then add your flour to the mixture and whisk until fully blended.
Next, pour them out and simply cook them on a medium heat. Flip them when the bottom becomes solid or the edges begin to turn darker.
We’ve also moved away from the electric griddle and on to a cast iron griddle. We love it! The clean up is so much easier, it’s more versatile and the more you cook on it, the more seasoned {and better} it will taste.
And of course what’s a birthday pancake celebration without a little party fair.
The great thing about the birthday pancake is everyone can pick their on add-on’s. Wether it is chocolate chips, fruits or just sprinkles they’re simple and fun for everyone!
What’s something special you’ve done with your loved ones for birthdays? We’d love to hear some of your favorite traditions!
Have an inspired day!

These pancakes look so yummy! Might be trying them this morning, cause now I’m craving pancakes! š A favorite birthday tradition for us is to use a “special plate” for the birthday person. We have a colorful plate that says “God bless you on your special day”….its always fun to see on the table for celebrations. š
