A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to share that our primary suite is move-in-ready {aka certificate of occupation approved}. While we still have a lot to finish, we’ve been slowly moving in. It’s been a slow burn from here: We’re slowly piecing our closets together, waiting on product to arrive, starting to place orders for cabinetry… Right before moving right back out of the rest of our house.
We had a leak this winter in our kitchen, so all the old hardwoods {pre-finished, now discontinued womp womp} have to go. It actually made choosing floors for this new space easy though, and it will lighten up our entire house when the whole thing is finished. This should also never happen again since we went for a simple white oak floor. We luckily found an Airbnb nearby {as opposed to being crammed in a hotel room}, and we’ll be back and forth overseeing the job in between work. We’re thrilled to start putting it all together.
But today we thought we’d share three things we love about our addition! I wasn’t sure what to call this post, but they’re some things we wanted to share. So we’ll go with 3 smart details to consider for a new build.
3 smart details to consider for a new build: 1. Storage
We call it the hatch, because calling it that reminds us of something from Lost, instead of “slightly creepy crawlspace door that a serial killer who dresses as a clown would love.”
But first, We’re loving this door, with its frosted glass and awesome black steel accents. Clearly, it was hard to pick just one thing!
We built up our foundation a bit larger than the usual size. This is because our house where we’re located, requires a crawlspace, and the existing one under the older part of the house is almost impossible to get to when we need to do something, because old.
So Jamin went big with this design on our third official addition to this house. I made fun of him for a really long time, until I realized how much storage we were going to have for all those dead bodies Christmas decorations, underneath.
I was also reluctant that the only sensible access to this space, per the design, was in our laundry room. So I went with floors that will hide it well, especially when everything is in place.
But this is a little “hidden” door that provides access to the sealed crawlspace. Not that hidden, but not that obvious, either. All I know is that our plumber/electrician/crawlspace guy won’t feel like they’re claustrophobic anymore when they venture down to this part of the house.
We’ll be sharing more of the underneath later, when it’s all cleaned up. {It’s still a little dirty from the flooding this spring.}
More storage will be coming soon for the every day items in cabinetry, closets and more. But for now, a smart crawlspace with a good foundation was a wise place to begin!
I made Jamin pose. But it’s so well lit and easy to access for future use, I actually love that he added this.
We still have some key elements coming into play here when it comes to even more smart storage over all, but in the meantime, it’s really all about those little details that I know we’re just going to love.
This Kichler chandelier is a part of their new collection – so much eye candy.
3 smart details to consider for a new build: 2. The Lighting
We love all the lighting in this space, and we’ll be getting into more detail soon. But in particular, a little detail we’ve loved adding has been these Backlit mirrors by Kichler. We can’t recommend them enough. I’ve said it before, but you know those ring lights people use to flatter their faces on camera? This is that, for when you’re getting ready.
And when you’re not self grooming, they make for great ambiance light in the evening too. Like a lamp for your bathroom.
So many uses that make is so amazing, honestly.
It has a simple touch button underneath, that illuminates whenever you need it.
Turn it off easily when not in use. It’s the little things and we adore this element from Kichler Lighting!
The sconces are pretty awesome, too.
It’s just so very versatile and handy.
3 smart details to consider for a new build: 3. Shower Elements
This is more like a two in one, but we had to include them together because they’re oh so great. Like we mentioned above, our addition isn’t technically finished yet. But for the shower, it was all about those details. We included both a bluetooth speaker and vent in our light option, along with two shower head options for our shower. We don’t have glass in place yet, but think double shower doors with awesome handles. Like we said, it’s slowly but surely coming together when we can manage it all. But in the meantime, we are loving these shower elements!
Jamin actually found this for me, because he knows how much I love to sing in the shower. Or just play music and be. No, I’m not sorry if the entire house can hear me.
You can connect your phone to the app, but the Sensonic Series Vent + Bluetooth speaker are the perfect accent for our shower. No, these guys are not a sponsor. We just have so much fun with it, and it’s the little things y’all. It has a “normal” mode, which provides plenty of light for a space. But you can connect your phone and download the app to choose a light theme for your shower, whilst rocking it out to those shower tunes. Its sound quality is perfection, and the lights are oh so fun! Perfect for a teenager, or full blown adult who wants their shower experience to feel like an all out spa. Yes, please.
These photos don’t even begin to capture the spectrum but make it so fun. Seriously, if you need a vent… and light… and speaker because you can… try it out.
And of course we love the two shower head option with Delta. We’ll be covering more of this in the future, but we combined their CASSIDY™ line in the TempAssure® Shower Trim with their Single-Setting Metal Raincan Shower Head In Champagne Bronze. It’s such a fun combo with lots of options for all things shower.
We just adore these classic lines and pretty finishes with a dependable brand name.
Our tub isn’t even in yet, and it already feels like a spa.
Just a testament to do what works for you in your home, and choose the little things that make a big difference.
We waited for over five years for this one, so I can’t wait to share the other things we have in store for this addition and truly finishing off the space. What are some favorite little elements you’ve added in your home which made a big difference?
We’d love to hear your ideas. We can’t wait to share more as we move along! Wish us luck with these floors – we’ve already started moving out.
Have an inspired day!
