Have you heard yet?
Our friend Laura from Finding Farms wrote a book.
And not just any book. It’s a clever little DIY book – Rustic Modern Metal Crafts.
I’ll be honest – it’s not something I usually think of in the way of creations for our home… thus its cleverness. ;} It’s chockfull of 35 stylish ideas – to keep for yourself or give away.
Metal brings in a whole different element for any space, and kind of ups the ante for awesomeness. So today, with Laura’s permission, we thought we’d share one of our favorite simple ideas from her book: End Cap Soy Candles.
Except we had a little bit of a mishap.
Said mishap involving a pair of eager mischievous pups stealing one of the end caps, led to the evolution of this project. So instead, we used some simple buckets. Which brings us to another good point about this book: that you can totally use her projects as a springboard for your own. Isn’t that the best kind? The kind that inspires you?
And so these are more what we like to call mini handmade bucket candles. {From the dollar spot at Target, nonetheless.}
What you’ll need: {Her supplies are a little different considering the subtraction of two trouble making puppies that are now signed up for discipline classes}
• candle wax {soy}
• glass measuring cup
• containers of choice – her book is amazing and has galvanized stove end caps – we used buckets from the dollar spot at Target
• wicks of candles at appropriate length {You can trim down once you place them in the wax}
• scissors
• fancy trimmings {optional}
• scents of choice
• you may need: straws + tape or clothes pins to hold the wicks in place
• Laura’s book {duh}
Fill up your glass measuring cup with wax and melt {monitor carefully and stir as you go} in the microwave.
Then place your wick in your bucket {secure it with the aforementioned straw/tape or clothespin combo, or simply tape it to your bucket’s handle if you have one} and on a cleanable/protected/heat safe surface {in case you have any spills} add the wax.
Once your wax is added, add your scent. The book recommends 40-50 drops which is about right. We did less because I’m stingy. ;} It all depends on how much scent you like in your candles…
If you’re an oil lover, here’s some of our favorite combos via DoTerra we did three different kinds : Balance, Lavender + Peppermint, Frank + Lavender – We thought these were quite holidaisical.
Let your candles sit overnight…
And then deck them out with some holidaiscal goodness to reflect how amazing you are with your mad gift giving skillz.
These can be something you do year round for clever little handmade gifts!
Oh! And if you decide to make them, here’s some free little gift tags to attach to them: {just click, download and print-tag scandles – we prefer printing on cardstock for a great, clever official look} They go fabulously as a set with our sugar scrub, soap, + salt soaks — coordinated tags = winning
And there ya have it. You know where you can find me tonight… it’s how I roll. ;}
The perfect little handmade gift! And of course, the entire book would be even better… so check it out!
As always, let us know if you try it. We’d love to hear! Happy gift giving and great book reading, friends!
