We’re a little off-season since everyone is drowning in tinsel and gift wrap, but we wanted to circle back to this little space again. A few weeks ago we were thrilled to share our butler’s pantry + laundry room reveal, and all the difference it made for our home. We received a message from Janna asking what we’d recommend regarding a laundry room. So today we thought we’d share 5 smart additions for a laundry room space!
Since this is a fresh addition, we were both limited {yay codes} and had some leeway with what we were able to do. That means some of what we did may work for some spaces but not others. Here are a few things we are so glad that we did with this space in particular, after waiting for so long.
But let’s back up for a second: You may remember that previously, we did our laundry for a long time in the corner of our creepy basement. Then one we finished out the basement, it wasn’t so bad.
Because of the codes here, we had to wait. When we moved in, the garage was like this.
But then it became this.
And in the corner, this was our dedicated space for all things laundry.
But we desperately needed a larger space for a family of five, with storage and more. Thus the idea of our primary suite was born… and the laundry room became a part of it. For anyone wondering, our little corner is now a closet, which also gave us EVEN MORE space. Game changer.
TADA! But back to this space, because we are so glad to have it.
1. 5 Smart Additions for a Laundry Room Space: Storage
It’s a must-have in any laundry room. Here we have installed cabinets which were just another amazing way to add space to our entire home. We use it to store laundry and smaller cleaning supplies. {Larger supplies like our vacuum cleaner + charging station, etc. now live downstairs in the closet.}
But here’s where we customized it to us: the crawlspace. See that line with the handle at the bottom of the photo below? Because that’s our hatch to the crawlspace. This was one of Jamin’s requests in the design with our architect, and while I laughed at first, to this day I am grateful. Here he is, modeling it Vanna/creepy-serial-killer style. Because while crawlspaces are inherently creepy, {I didn’t grow up with them} this one is fully encapsulated, and a generous 42 length x 16 width x 4 tall.
What does that mean? It means that it’s well-lit, and I can store all my Christmas down there without having to rent out a storage unit or take up the attic space. So… something to consider if you’re ever doing a big build, or addition… is to go a little larger than average when it comes to the crawlspace.
2. 5 Smart Additions for a Laundry Room Space: Drying Rack.
I covered it a little in this George + Willy post, but we ado adore this drying rack. When it’s in use, it’s up and out of the way, and every surface ever in our house is no longer covered in yoga pants and delicates when I do the wash.
And here I am, channeling my best Vanna. It’s a game changer, for sure + we recommend it to everyone who is interested in adding something really useful to their laundry space.
3. 5 Smart Additions for a Laundry Room Space: A softer light.
While we went to the extra details with the planked ceilings and canned lights, we adore this light from Kichler. The pendant version is in our butler’s pantry. Why I love it: It works as a bit of a night light at night. Almost as if we have a lamp on in the room, without going full force with our other lights.
Which brings me to…
4. 5 Smart Additions for a Laundry Room Space: A Smart Door.
I knew I wanted something a little different for this door when we were planning the space. Since you can kind of see it from the rest of the house, it’s a great option to hide all the messes when guests are over. So we went for this steel and glass door for a classic vibe. We also made it hidden away as a pocket door, so it didn’t swing and take up valuable real estate when not in use.
During the day it emits a soft glow with the window backlight, but the kKichler light at night, as well, helps give it a little glow too. We love the way that it feels in the space.
4. 5 Smart Additions for a Laundry Room Space: An Additional Fridge.
I recommend this for any clients with a family. Because unless you have a gigantic fridge in your kitchen, you kind of need two. And we are so glad we moved this one upstairs when we finished off the space. It now lives in our laundry room so that we can easily step in from the kitchen, to grab what we need during meal prep.
No more traveling to the basement when in need of something. So if you can, and it works with your floor plan, we heavily recommend considering a fridge for the space.
So we hope this helps with some of your decisions! Sometimes it’s crazy to think about how far we’ve come with this house journey and we’re so grateful for all the little things that make this house a home.
What are some things you’d recommend? We’d love to hear.
Have an inspired day!
