scandinavian farmhouse with bohemian trimmings {a living room design}

When Rebekah contacted us, she was looking for a way to pull in some major style for her family’s main living area.

The space is a multifunctional one, and she said that she loved clean lines, but was looking for something a little warmer than the average modern-all-the-way look. If she could nail her style, it would be Scandinavian farmhouse with bohemian trimmings.

We were up for the challenge, and were so excited to put our heads together for some great solutions the entire family could love.

We have to say, we fell in love with the ideas for the space already. We tried to strike a balance between everything chosen for the room, and find that a fun, functional aesthetic for their family full of lots of personality, as well. We brought in a lot of the simple, scandinavian feel, but we also hope that it has a bit of that farmhouse/bohemian touch to keep it a little more unpredictable and interesting.
We always choose both investment pieces, and the sensible ones for the space, and I included the furniture plan below, as well. So without further ado… our ideas!

Entryway:
We love their grey piece that they already have. We think that is dead on for the style they’re going for. So we wouldn’t change a thing there. We would also try this geometric light for a little something different, and a bit more light in the area. It’s a fun, different modern shape and contrasts nicely with their grey chest.
5. Hanging Shelf – nothing says scandinavian like some hanging elements. She noted that they enjoy moving things around, and we’d love to see this shelf to the left when you walk in, on the wall. {As indicated on furniture plan} The perfect space for accessories – and since their kiddos aren’t toddlers anymore, they could get away with it – making it as long or short as you wanted. They sell them on Etsy, here + we found a DIY how to, here.
6. Paint color
We are with them on the white. The color we chose is a nice, soft white for the space, and we think they’ll love it.
9. Mantel
Love the idea of bringing the scandinavian feel with the fireplace as a focal point in the space. We have this as our muse from the founders of schoolhouse electric. We’d love to see them white wash that brick, and build out the mantel to bulk it a little to simplify the shape. And we’d even put some modern shiplap behind it, just the width of the mantle as shown on the board, all the way up. It should be a fairly inexpensive change for lots of impact.
Furniture
7. Leather sofa – Swooning over this leather sofa. It’s really a great way to get your hands on a mid century {look} without paying double to triple as much. It’s still an investment piece, but with such classic lines, it will probably last them forever.
4. Blue chair – The blue chair brings a little fun and easy color to the space. It should pair nicely in contrast with her husband’s recliner {which was staying}, and they can spruce them both up with some pillows {more on those below}.
1. Dresser – This dresser is gorgeous, and would make the perfect entertainment center with the tv mounted above. It also has plenty of storage, which makes it versatile if they want to do something different with it later. I love that it combines the modern with a touch of rustic.
• These are investment pieces {the sofa + dresser} Another alternative is to look for this same look with genuine mid century pieces because you really never know what you’ll find on craigslist/local perusing, but these are great, sturdy additions to their family space.
11. Day Bed – We know this piece is a little different, but we adore the way this feels with the rest of the space, as a soft, loung-y area. We would definitely use a plethora of pillows across the back for great color and comfort, but it’s a fun nod to that bohemian feel, and contrasts beautifully with the mid century piece. It’s adventurous, but strikes a nice balance between all those clean lines without the space becoming too stark. But we would pair it with the green cushion, shown. We also provided an alternative modern look, in case the wooden frame didn’t suit their wants/needs.
3. Rug
There’s something really pretty about a black and white rug, against a warm leather and other wood tones. It should make a nice compromise for the fur baby as well, who has black fur. We know how that goes.
8. Light

It’s got a nice modern edge to it in a pretty finish with an elegant touch – a chandelier without being too frou frou with simple lines. We think it will look beautiful in the rest of the space with all the pieces together. Round bulbs would take it over the top for that modern feel.
Accessories
10. Pillows
We love these pillows {1, 2, 3, 4, 5,} for some fun color and a combo of comfort. – I’d thrown in a little extra blue on the leather sofa to tie in the chair nicely with this pillow here- and lilac on the blue chair + large bench
Basket – A fun way to stash accessories.
Curtains –  A little subtle personality for their window.
2. Art
We’d love to see another nod to modern but colorful with this artist’s creation on a big canvas over the sofa. + a print from this artist – one of our fave artists from our book series. This little simple, modern banner is pretty great, too.
12. Side Tables + Lamp
We noticed their side stump table in the photos they sent and love it – we would definitely use it as a side table. If they would like another end table, we would recommend this one. We love this unexpected modern vibe for a touch of global in the coffee table + bringing in some metallic to tie in with your chandy is always a fun idea ;}
This lamp echoes a lot of the modern geometric vibe we have going on in the space, and it’s really fun to contrast it with this shade, as another nod to the modern farmhouse aesthetic.
______________
And that’s about it – a great way to mix multiple styles for a one of a kind vibe in their home.
