Remember this little post last week on a kitchen with character?

We were thrilled to put our heads together and come up with some fun ideas for Shelley and her family… and today, we’re talking about the living room area, as well!
As you can see, both of these areas flowed together, so they needed to work cohesively for the family’s space. We were able to look at photos before they moved in, as well as after. We took their existing furnishings into consideration, as well as a few special requests for family photos and quotes that they love.

As you can see, their home has great bones, with a ton of potential and just needed a little fine tuning to really bring it all together to vibe more with their home’s traditional feel.

So here’s what we came up with:

For their living room, we wanted to choose items that both worked with existing pieces, but then also have a few suggestions for newer pieces down the line when they may feel like an update. Building a space is definitely a process, and Rome wasn’t built in a day. ;} We hope this gives them some inspiration to work with for now, and in the future. We also included a furniture plan to clarify placement. So without further ado, a few of the details:
1. + 2. Sofa + Pillows
We grabbed up a sofa that looks similar to their curved sectional, and used it as an example for placement purposes. These ideas would also work with your existing floral choices in their pillows, if they wish to build slowly. But we love the idea of
this beautiful pattern in two pillows {each end} Paired with the two striped pillows {behind each organic pattern} and one lumbar pillow for another shot of the same colors. It kicks it up a notch with some unique style.
We also think these crochet pillows have a great feel to add to the space in a nice little neutral color. For their existing chair, or future additions.
3. End Table
These nesting tables add a nice feel to the space, along with versatile storage. So that when they’re not in use, they can be put away nicely.
4. Coffee Table
This round coffee table complements the curved sectional, and adds a nice rustic, sturdy vibe to the space.
5. + 8. Rugs
We adore the feel of this rug with all of the elements, and they may want to consider pairing it with a natural woven rug to make the room extra cozy. They have nice, almost neutral colors and a pattern that they can build off of easily, down the line.
Like the crowning touch to a space, we always wait until the very last piece has been added to place the rug, as it influences the furniture arrangements, and the right size can mean everything. We always recommend placing what you want to add, and then measuring accordingly. See the furniture plan attached for a rug placement suggestion – with the sofa in the corner, a straight placement will help anchor the room.
6. Mirror
The addition of this simple mirror placed in the center of the room {shown in furniture plans} helps balance the space while keeping it bright and fresh with a nice organic shape.
7. Chairs
We’d love to see a little contrast in traditional shapes to offset their modern curved sectional. Simple linen wingback chairs never go out of style, and as placed on each side of the fireplace, may free up a little walking room, as well as provide more space for entertaining. These are investment pieces and just something to consider down the line.
9. Throw
Every space needs a nice cozy throw. These
block colors keep it simple.
10. Lamp
We love this lamp to add a little height and carry through more of that subtle green color and sophisticated, earthy vibe in the accessories.
11. Art – forever young
We absolutely love
this quote too, and have used it on a piece in our living room. I selected some art because it may be worth having a custom piece made, and there are two options here:
To place it over the fireplace, front and center, or around the kitchen table area. We think vertically in each situation would work best. However, it may be worth researching locally, to see if someone can hand paint it for them on a canvas, OR directly on their wall [if they’re really good and they’ve seen their work] over their fireplace inside the already existing molding. We hope these collections of ideas get the ball rolling with inspiration! It would be a great idea for their space.
12. Family photos
Original image from
here – They did such a good job with their own gallery wall, we borrowed their look of the frames to illustrate the idea of family photo placement.- We love this simple look on the walls for all their new family photos. We hope the attached image helps them get started with placement ideas – keeping all the frames uniform in a simple pattern of sorts on the wall, should help with keeping things easy while also being able to display some of your beautiful family.
You never know what you can find to create your beautiful gallery walls!

Don’t you love how you can warm up a living room with layers, texture and even cool neutral colors?
Have an inspired day!
Your room turned out beautifully! I especially love the rounded couch set at an angle in the room. It’s so very inviting and the colors are soothing. I can see relaxing with a good book in front of the fireplace.
