With thanksgiving coming up, I’ve been kind of enthralled by all the possibilities of a fabulous tablescape. Not necessarily for Thanksgiving, as we always opt to spend that holiday with family somewhere else…but I love the idea of using unexpected materials, and combinations of textures and color…and I’m particularly lured by the prints and fabrics available to homeowners who wish to create a unique look. Simple layers can be quite inspiring for the cooler weather outside this season. And an interesting setting, can transform a room.
After all those prints…and what I usually go for in the fun vibrant colors…I was completely in love with this photograph. I was totally inspired by the simple, natural colors and effortless look. But it feels so…cozy.
so, in the true spirit of being thankful for what I have, already…I decided to rumage around my house. You may be completely shocked to know that I happen to have quite a few extra yards of fabric lying around. Everywhere you look. surprise.
I had a simple linen left over from our veranda project…and decided to take it right off the roll and onto the table. I’m kind of notorious for overestimating for a project. (read: I stink at math) I touched up a few of the ridiculous wrinkles with my iron right where it was (carefully! on a low setting!) and the selvedged edges make it the perfect tablecloth. (this way I can use it for something later, by not even bothering to hem it, when I’m tired of it!)
Before I knew it, I was digging out some super old fabric napkins I have from when we got married, and I’ve never used. I wrapped our silverware with these. I decided to slice up yet some more leftover fabric (silk, this time) to surround it in, and was happy with the result. This had a touch of blue in it, with a surprise of green for another dimension.
I finished it off with some extra twine I had sitting in my laundry room. voila. bundled silverware ready to go. I thought it was quite the cozy approach for my simple fall tablescape.
I then used some of the pumpkins we have from our fall decorations, and placed them in the bowls. Let me just say this…you may notice some mistakes in my table settings, and it’s all with good cause. I find rules exhausting, so I don’t really follow them (much to the distain of some of my southern lady cohorts.)
At my house, we take our shoes off. We mix and match the silverware and plates (when they’re not plastic) and we certainly DO NOT adhere to ancient (and no longer relevant IMO) rules…We also place pumpkins in the bowls for an added layer and touch of color.
I broke out two of my patterns…and piled them on top of chargers, for a subtle touch of sparkle as opposed to a placemat.
Again, I merely enhanced the blues in my dining room, and accentuated them with subtle fall colors, such as the orange in the pumpkins, rather than trying to change them all together.
the centerpiece is decked with pheasant feathers, willow balls, antique fisherman floats, and twigs of all shapes and sizes, for a dramatic fallesque display. And fire hazard if I’m not careful…
And here we are. A seemingly appropriate take on fall cuisine. All with what I already had…that can later be used for something else…without spending a dime.
Now…who to have over???
