If you’ve been tuned in for a while, then you know that we’ve been finishing our basement rehab, bit by bit {we’ve shared some of our plans here + here for each part – We even shared our new barn doors with Artisan Hardware yesterday!} It’s hard to believe it no longer looks like it did. And today, we’re here to share a little bit of basement progress – the studio plans.
When we first moved in, it was this little corner that freaked us out a little. I was more than happy to reclaim it even though sometimes, even I secretly wondered if it would look nice again. So we’ve proudly dubbed this our home studio, the place where we create.
We did have a multi-functioning space upstairs, but decided to bring it downstairs, and let the kids spread out with their bedrooms and belongings. I’m in no rush to create a bedroom for Aiden, and he hasn’t been asking too much, but it’s time. So I’m dragging my heels. This is my favorite space ever.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, said studio is mine. We both store stuff here, and I tried to get Jamin to join me with a desk, but he prefers the sofa and his laptop when he’s at home. Also, he says I talk too much.

So here’s what it looked like…
We were a little overwhelmed every time we came downstairs.
The laundry will be one of those spaces that will evolve as we go, and by evolve I mean I have plans for a fabulous sink and cabinet area that I can’t wait to share, along with some tile + other ideas… so stay tuned.
We are definitely in love with this light, too, and love how it glows at night. A nice change from the florescent one, for sure.
We had wallpaper installed last week, and I spent the weekend moving a few pieces down into the area, so we’re close! I still need to touch up the shelving {it looks like this because codes here are ridiculous, and one follows the rules until the inspection is over.}
So here’s what we plan to put in the space: A lot of personality that works hard for us. And by us, I mean me.
Tile
The fabulous tile, as we mentioned before, is oakwood lily by Jeffrey Court.
Lights
The lights are from Kichler – we’re loving the sconces + the hanging light
Paint colors: {We tied them in with the rest of the house}
- PURE WHITE {HGSW4006}: trim, ceilings, and our main cabinets.
- SAND DOLLAR {HGSW3117} on our kitchen island.
- NEBULOUS WHITE {HGSW4057}: On our walls
- DIVERSE BEIGE {HGSW3086}: A few of our doors for a nice deeper grey, and accent colors throughout the home.
- SWIMMING {HGSW1327}: (In case you were wondering) The blue you spy throughout the rest of the home, on the ceilings + some walls!
Rug
Wait for it, because this rug is going to rock everyone’s faces off. Yes, I did just write that, and I am stuck in 1999. This doesn’t do the colors justice.
Wallpaper
We’re loving the wallpaper, and you can catch a sneak peek below.
Filing Cabinet + Desk
To hold all the much-needed things… although the green desk is no longer in the studio anymore, but just twelve steps away in the main kiddo area, now. In my head and trying to figure everything out, it’s been a snack bar, desk for me, and now officially, a command center. Check out our how to from last week with Frogtape – but the wallpaper sneak peek is fun! Jamin’s just pretty pumped about finally pulling this bad boy out, to file all our paper work.
Gold Desk
I was thrilled to have some shelving towers built on each side of my desk alcove, so that we can store all our samples in a suitable and organized manner for clients. You may remember my desk, but it’s the perfect fit and I’m so glad to use it again!
And that’s about it! Stay tuned, because we can’t wait to share how it’s all coming together! I can honestly say, I love this little space!
As usual, let us know if you have any questions!
What are some essentials that you use in your study/studio? We’d love to hear!
Have an inspired day!

Thanks so much, Rose! We are loving it.

Amazing! If I had moved into that house, the basement would still look like the before. It’s one thing to take an empty room and transform it with new paint and maybe even new trim and flooring, but to take THAT space and make it beautiful is a real talent.

Jenny – you are too sweet. Your comment made our day – thank you! we’re just excited it’s not so scary anymore, and liveable. Also, the giant spiders are gone 😀

Do you have a tutorial on those sliding doors? They are super cool.

Hi Nigel! We shared all about them, here! https://www.thehandmadehome.net/2018/02/beautiful-barn-doors-artisan-hardware/
