How do I spiff up my master bedroom? What are some bedroom decorating tips?
It’s time for another edition of Coffee Talk + Reader Q’s, and we have to say, this is one of our most common questions.
Master bedrooms are oh so important, because they’re your retreat and so much more. However, they usually come last. I mean, who can blame us, right? We have kiddos and living rooms and all the other spaces of the house that people might see and that we congregate in a little more often. Other rooms always naturally take priority, and so sometimes the space for ourselves falls last on the list.
bedroom decorating tips – the video
Here’s a little video snippet where Jamin and I cover the question, complete with cheesy photoshop examples because sometimes, that’s fun too. Illustrated ideas really help drive those points home of the possibilities for what can be.
We’re also including some of our fave bedroom go-tos below that are a little bit more all-encompassing with things to consider when taking on your master bedroom. So without further ado:
We hope you enjoyed our little video and sometimes over the top ridiculous antics!
bedroom decorating tips:
A few of our fave go-to tips when it comes to all things bedrooms
• Add character with art or something else over that headboard.
In a bedroom, the bed naturally takes center stage. So it’s important to place something over the bed. Mirrors, art and more are oh so important. Even if it’s an accent wall with fun wallpaper, it works with the space. Add one of a kind personality and something meaningful with a great opportunity to showcase something special.
• Down with the fan! {or at least the ugly 80’s ones…}
The 80’s are totally back, but the 80’s fans are not. So they can go. Back to Hades and all things hellfire where they belong. No, I’m not being ridiculous.
Kichler Lighting actually has beautiful modern options if you love a fan in your bedroom. We totally get it and think their options are definitely worthy of a looksee. {We just added one in our pole basement reveal and it is absolutely ahhhmazing.}
So we’re not entirely against fans. But if your fan saw better days circa 1976, it may be time to add another fresh one to the mix.
And if you do want to pull yours down, a corner fan a-la the vintage look is always a nice option/compromise, along with a pretty little chandelier.
Like earrings to a good outfit, a chandelier is oh so wonderful in a space – instant character.
• Add a mirror, or hide that TV.
Once upon a time, we were anti TV’s in the bedroom.
Until we put a TV in our bedroom.
They’re amazing and we love them and We could watch Breaking Bad and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Parks and Rec and… I’ll stop here because we totally get it. Nothing says relax like checking out of reality for a while in bed with your fave Netflix binge. AMIRITE?! Seriously it’s one of my therapies. {Another may or may not be taking lunch breaks by the pool in warm weather – shhh}
We love them so.
So if you must have a TV, hide it with art, or encased in another piece of furniture. Nothing is more of a bummer than a TV centered on a dresser with all the cords and various whatnots. One of our major go-tos, is to hide that mess.
If you can have that space over your dresser open for something else, use a mirror. It helps enlarge the space, and adds light.
Winning.
And since all bedrooms are not equal, check out other options for a mirror somewhere else. They’re super useful and you won’t regret it.
• Use a rug
Yes, even if you have carpet in your room.
Even if you don’t think you need one.
I’m always amazed at how people hold out on rugs because they think they’re costly and therefore aren’t necessary. They’re wrong and those people can sit their in their rug-less sad wrongness, as they will be forever wrong. Bottom line. Sorry not sorry.
Rugs adds color, dimension, and another important layer to your sanctuary. You can find amazing deals on rugs if you search and do your due diligence, and they are worth every bit of legwork. You can also spend a little and really appreciate the investment. Wherever you are in life, you can find a rug for you and you will not regret it.
A good rug helps establish the boundaries of a room, and helps anchor the space. We love rugs and think they should always be used. Everywhere. DO IT.
• Substantial nightstands and nice lamps are a must
We’re talking comfort here. Nothing beats being able to lean over and turn off your lamp so you can go to bed, without having to get out of bed. You need that space for your books and water and all things light.
They’re important for a bedroom and should never be neglected.
However, that doesn’t mean they have to be expensive.
I rehabbed these nightstands when they came super damaged, and ended up with a happy ending with a large and in charge discount. {I think they were already super affordable and ended up being for free.} And these lamps? Ten smackers with a new shade from Target, scored at the thrift store. It doesn’t have to be expensive to float your boat or have major style and purpose. You never know what you’ll find once you start looking.
• Get cozy with layers
Why have a bed if you’re not adding layers? Layers up the ante in the coziness department and thus your comfort level and thus your sanctuarious feel for the space. They’re wonderful and you will love them, so don’t forget to diversify your bedding.
Add some more pillows to bring in personality. Throw in a quilt on top of your duvet to up the fluffiness factor. Use another color of sheets so that it brings attention to that base layer and adds another dimension. The possibilities are endless, and that bedding should be your number one priority. Clearly, this odd little list was not included in order of importance.
We hope these little go-to tips help get you started and/or motivated on creating your very own sanctuary!
Put your room first for a change and see how much you enjoy it!
