A few weeks ago, we were more than thrilled to share our basement overhaul – from crusty and creepy to warm and cozy! And honestly, clean. Clean was also a big deal. As in, no more bugs all over the place. And we’re pretty sure the clown in the crawlspace moved out. That’s always a good place to start. And today we’re talking about choosing furniture.
It’s funny how this went from the scariest place in the house, to the room we now spend the most time in.
Choosing furniture – a place to gather
We knew we wanted a place to gather and entertain, but also a space for kids to grow into. A movie room, and a space for sleepovers and guests. So we knew we had to think differently about what we wanted in the space. It needed to be multifunctional on a lot of levels.
We went back and forth about the idea of a bunk room, but knew that because we wanted a studio area downstairs too, that just wouldn’t work. We needed something to fully utilize space in a clever way, when not in use.
Enter: La-Z-Boy.
First up in choosing furniture for the basement: their Duo recliner. We went for a set in their new line of fabulous recliners, from La-Z-Boy with a bit of a twist.
These guys are totally customizable. So while I would usually not be so inclined {see what I did there?} to choose a recliner for the space, these actually had an attractive look in addition to being useful.
We LOVE them for movie nights.
They recline with a button, and serve as a nice modern contrast to the softer, classic lines we already have in the space. Bonus: It even has a space to charge your USB device.
The kids love sitting in it when they get their iPad time, and we enjoy it for all things phone and other accessory charging.
The fabric is so fabulous, it feels like a soft, trustworthy tee. We opted for this awesome fabric, and polished it off with some pretty brass nail heads to give the entire room more of a custom feel.
The fabric we used is D145087 – i-Merino / Flannel
The coffee table, is also La-Z-Boy.
As we were choosing furniture we wanted something versatile, that could fit in between the long space, but also be easily moved when needed.
We expand and contract and move this coffee table for game nights, lego wars, side tables, and easily move it out of the way when the sofas convert into beds.
Choosing furniture – favorite addition
The sleeper sofas may, hands down, be one of our favorite ever additions in our home.
So we definitely went with two queen-sized sleeper sofas from La-Z-Boy, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with them.
Super comfy and stylish in one, we went for classic lines and style.
This fabric has a fabulous subtle tweed look to it – details on the fabric are here: C140536 – Deauville / Hemp
The sofa is great for guests and entertaining, and when we have overnight guests, we’re all about the sleeper sofas! The kids love them. They actually request their own little sibling camp outs downstairs on a regular basis, for a treat.
The mattress feels nothing like the hotel sleeper sofas you’re probably associated with. At least that’s what I always thought of, when I thought of a sleeper sofa. Our family, crammed in a hotel room, with a metal rod going up my back in an awkward matress. Wheeee!
It didn’t really make for a good night’s sleep.
Here’s an up close pic of these glorious mattresses. They’re actually memory foam.
If you’ve ever slept on a memory foam mattress, you know how comfy these are.
We simply fold them out, set up the sheets, then put them back when not in use. WINNING for all the purposes and needs in a space!
They have such nice classic lines, these will be with us for years to come. Definitely a classic addition with timeless capabilities.
We love smart purchases like these when choosing furniture and especially when they come to our house.
So thanks for letting us dive in today since a few fabulous readers had some questions on why we chose what we did. It’s always good to share what works and what doesn’t… we love the pieces down here and how often we use them!
As always, let us know if you have any questions.
Have an inspired day!
