Warning: Throwback/nerdy photos alert.
Once upon a time, a boy met a girl.
They were young and in love and dreaming of a future together.
The boy had never felt this way about a girl before, he thought she was pretty swell.
So much so, that he asked her to be his wife. Because you know, dreaming of the future and all.
So they signed up for premarital counseling. It was a class to prepare them. To think about the hard things you usually don’t think about when all you can see are wedding bells. There, they were asked to write about their future together and both, without the knowledge of the other when asked about careers, wrote that they wanted to own a design business together.
Even though he was a psych/sociology major and she was in graphic design school. That little jewel of info would stay hidden for at least another decade.
Fast forward, and they got married. It was everything they dreamed.
She was simply beautiful. He even cried when she walked down the aisle.
And they partied the night away and did all the traditional wedding type things, like cut the cake…
and shoot garters…..
and drive away in a fancy car.
Yes, they were absolute spring chickadees. No, I can’t hold my eyes open when there’s a flash.
They lived life happily together and a few years later, started a family with a precious little boy.
And it was after this little boy entered life, that they began writing on the internet on these things called blogs.
And through the process two more little beings came into the story.
And somewhere during those years that now seem like an absolute blur, that little blog grew into a real live business. Don’t blink.
So, over a decade later.
When they were packing up their things to move away from their first location as a family, and start the next chapter, they were cleaning out their garage. That girl found that old piece of paper crumpled in a tupperware tub full of college memories, that said what they wanted to own a design business together one day.
What?! They simply couldn’t believe it. They sat down, and laughed… and then teared up a little. After all this time. After all the blips in the journey, all the work and time it’d taken to get there… they’d completely forgotten what they’d each written in that little counseling session, so long ago. Before they even really knew what love and commitment were. Before they even knew where they were headed. Sometimes, it feels like they’re still trying to figure it all out.
Quietly, they had been working toward that goal together not even realizing it was the first thing they’d planned for. Even if it was separately.
Because really, how could anyone dress like that and set a reasonable goal? I have no idea what we were doing here… I’m assuming the breast stroke since this was the summer olympics {circa 2000}.
They grew their little business through their design services and e-design and what was once written on a piece of paper was becoming reality. They just had no idea that all this time, this was the path they’d taken to get there.
Along the way they even decided to carry their own product lines for Fabric, wallpaper, art, apparel, stationary, home goods and so much more.
And now some 17 years after that first date, it seems those college kids had it right after all. Or at least made a really good guess.
So why the walk down memory lane?
We thought it was kind of funny, finding that piece of paper in our garage when we were packing away our lives and memories. Like a little gift to ourselves, from the past. A little nudge and gentle reminder to keep going after a discouraging few years. We really had no idea the other had written the same thing. But we’d held onto it. All these years later. Don’t worry… we didn’t toss it.
