how to repair your drywall

So, little-known secret: Ashley sleep walks and dreams of home repairs. On occasion, she goes a little crazy, gets the power tools, and does things like cut holes in the wall. Or maybe we just had some plumbing work done. But which story sounds more fun? My point exactly. If you ever find yourself needing to repair a sleepwalker’s destruction, damage done by the zombie apocalypse, or a bathroom redo here is a simple way to patch the hole. The more you know. {Cue sparkle rainbow star.}

To start, and to make your life easier, sand the edges of the drywall down.

Next, take a piece of drywall that you’ve cut several inches larger than your hole, and score the back side of it with a utility knife. Make sure to not cut all the way through to the paper on the front side. Once you have scored the backside, simply break the drywall and peel off everything to the front paper.

Simply spread some joint compound (or drywall “mud”) around the edges of the hole using a large putty knife.

Place the piece of drywall you have prepared in the hole, with the paper side out. Press the paper firmly into the mud you’ve put on the wall, and smooth it out.

Spread some “mud” all over the piece of drywall and blend it to the wall.

Let it dry, and apply a 2nd coat to help blend it. Then sand it smooth, and apply a 3rd coat if needed to blend it to the wall more, if necessary. Sand and keep adding mud, until you reach a blended look where it’s hard to tell there was a patch.

After a final sand, wipe it all clean, and paint.
