A sweet reader, Brooke, wrote in with a great question:
…I love what you do for client’s homes, but I’m hesitant to incorporate color in my bedroom. I tend to go neutral by default and I realize it’s because I’m actually afraid. Of what, I’m honestly not sure. I guess that I don’t know enough about color so my fear is that I will make the wrong choice. What is a good solution that is half way? A nice compromise? I’d love to see a room in softer colors that also serve as neutrals…
That’s a great question, Brooke! A lot of people tend to shy away from color in their bedroom, because they want calm. Some mistakenly believe that color will infuse a lot of energy and they won’t be able to sleep {or something?}. Or that the colors will blend badly, since they’re not sure what will work, so they opt for neutrals instead. Sometimes, they aren’t happy with that in the end, because they really wanted a little “more” so to speak. This bedroom space was such a fun refresh for us in a simple way, because it uses refined color to reflect calm. It created the ultimate retreat for two hardworking clients. Today, we thought we’d share a few simple changes we made, to show how to incorporate calm with color!
This simple setup feels both classic and edgy, with clean lines and brass accents. This is a great example of making big impacts in smart ways, because fun projects aren’t always total overhauls. We loved adding color to a neutral backdrop, creating character in their space!
This space was perfectly fine before, but they were looking for something that reflected them along with sensible solutions for long term design. That meant purchasing nicer items that will last for the long haul, and traditional statements that won’t be changed on a whim.
We love the way that it all turned out!
Incorporating Calm with Color: Darker Color.
Bringing in cozy chairs to their space was essential, since our client enjoys her morning routine and workspace here. We love the way these chairs {sourced locally} reflected the color scheme. High backs and simple lines play nicely with the bed, dressers and windows, to balance it all out. We brought in darker blues, which ultimately serve as neutrals, because they read so well. If you’re hesitant to bring in color, look for more traditional versions of something you wouldn’t usually consider, as a great place to get started. Darker hues can definitely read as “neutrals” within a space.
These chairs have clean modern lines, with a nice touch of color to serve that purpose.
Total side tangent, but can a bedroom have two dressers?
The answer is yes, If anyone is wondering. The key is, doing it right.
These clients were looking for more, much-needed storage in their primary space, due to limited closet storage. But a major bonus, is their room is long. Since they couldn’t find a dresser that is long enough on its own, she opted to purchase two of these dressers. {Again, purchased locally.} The tricky part was, making them work.
You know we love breaking the “rules”.
Incorporating Calm with Color: Look for Art as an Opportunity
We paired these two dressers with abstract art in various hues to anchor them, and make them feel more intentional. Then we brought in lots of greenery to soften and add an organic element. These soft colors serve a great purpose in adding interest to the room, but also keeping it light and soft.
We incorporated various prints from this shop to overlap the dressers. We love that they arrive framed!
The right pieces in the right spaces often come down to a play on proportions. We love the way all of this turned out.
Incorporating Calm with Color: Incorporate Metals
Their bed before was perfectly fine, but again, they were looking for something that forever bed. We loved accenting with this gorgeous canopy bed in traditional, timeless lines. Bonus: it works with an adjustable bed frame.
They were able to mix in the brass bed for a classic approach, which also warms up the space. Then it’s echoed throughout the room with lamps, lighting and more.
Incorporating Calm with Color: High Contrast in The Bedding
This space is more of a simple hued take on all things color, without a full-on commitment. We went with a nice, neutral backdrop, and though it’s soft, it’s accented with high contrast in all things bedding. This way it brings interest to the space without being too colorful.
Bedding:
throw / square pillows / bolster {similar} / comforter / rug / nightstands
We loved incorporating old books for character, more brass touches {similar lamps} and vintage clocks.
Incorporating Calm with Color: Pair Rugs to Add a Cozy Vibe
As discussed above, this space has both a sitting area and a main bedroom area. We loved simplifying this for a cleaner look! It helps to pair rugs in different areas to give it more of an organic feel.
This rug was layered with a natural woven find for more interest. The circular shape reflected the curve of the space and made it seem larger. The rugs next to each other are different, but still play well together within the space. The both bring in more of that soft color.
Similar chandelier from here.
Incorporating Calm with Color: Don’t forget Natural Elements
From woven baskets with subtle touches, to layered greens for a soft touch, bring in natural pieces to ground the space and channel in that timeless, organic feel.
These baskets brought in a simple geometric aspect with contrasting colors and we love what they offer in the space.
Just simple details to create a soothing ambience!
We hope you’ve enjoyed some simple tips for incorporating calm with color. What are some of your favorite elements to bring into a bedroom when it comes to soothing color? We’d love to hear.
Have an inspired day!
