One of the many joys of rehabbing a house, is spending lots the majority of your funds on things that you can’t really see. But are oh so very important. From the plumbing to the wiring… to septic tanks {oh boy those septic tanks} and things like all new insulation… the list is overwhelming and there are a ton of things to consider when weighing all those options.
We want it done right… and right, takes time.
But what about the things that you can see? They’re things we may have taken for granted in the past. They have the potential to be a necessary, pricey addition. Because while it’s kind of impossible to rank them in order of importance, windows are definitely at the top of the list. And to say this house is a little overdue for updates, would be an understatement.
Our number one concern for new windows, is actually the safety of our family.
This house is covered in old storm windows, and the interiors were also painted shut. That means breaking through two difficult barriers in case of something horrible, like a fire. And once the windows are either wedged open or broken out, fire ladders to get them down to the first story. It’s going to take a plan, and training our kids in case of an emergency. While it’s not fun to think about things like this, the process would be very dangerous and life threatening for our children if we didn’t plan ahead and make our home safer in big ways like this.
Our job is to get it up to livable safety standards to not only make a home, but keep our family as safe as possible.
Our second, and every day concern of course, is energy efficiency. The house definitely needs to be brought up to par on all things conservation and practicality. And while the old windows do hold a certain charm, it’s basically what I yell at my children from across the yard when they hold the door open too long, and they’re wasting our electricity bill and I sound like a certifiable redneck with, “Don’t let the bought air out!”
Yes, that’s the easiest way I could put it. I am a total mom.
After that, we have a sub-list of priorities that are also, obviously important: like cost, practicality, warranties, ease of use and cleaning… the list kind of keeps growing for things we didn’t even realize. Things I’d totally taken for granted in our new construction home.
Basically it’s a list of sobering things I never thought I’d hear myself say as an adult.
Enter stage left: Window World
Things like this make me a little bit leery because I feel like I’m out of my comfort zones. I have to switch gears and think of practicality and longevity and safety and budget, and all I really want to do is plan out the window framing and treatments. All the while in the back of my head, I’m concerned about choosing the best product because I don’t know enough about the window replacement process. And that requires doing my research, as all things home ownership and rehabbing do. I find myself wanting to bow out, and pass the baton to Jamin because #notmything. But this time, I put on my big girl britches and decided to really investigate for our home and family what the best possibilities were.
So when Jason from Window World graciously arrived at our home and gave us a thorough presentation, I felt like I learned so much in the brief time he was there. That, combined with some research on my own before and after, and I felt like I had a better understanding of what to expect.
In short, the people at Window World are totally honest with the options, process, and helping us with our budget. And this put our minds at ease.
And we just love company stories like the one Window World has:
Window World began in 1995, literally on the side of the road with a window and a man with a dream. He wanted to transform the way that a home improvement company could offer products in the home. He decided they would offer only the finest quality products with distinction and integrity, and do so at the lowest possible price.
Quite honestly, what all of us want when taking on a project like this: Simply the best for less. Well, that promise rings true because the company is now America’s largest replacement window and exterior remodeling company offering world-class products from industry-leading manufacturers of windows, siding, and other professional grade exterior remodeling products.
In short, their history is impressive. But what we love is their superior customer service. They’re the kind of company that stays with you from start to finish, literally holding your hand through all the great things their windows have to offer from selection and features, to warranties and replacement years down the road. Talk about a true partner!
They’ve got the awards to prove it. Window World received the Good Housekeeping Seal for nine consecutive years and was recently ranked ‘Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Windows and Patio Doors’ in a J.D. Power study! Their products are home grown and made in the USA (LOVE THIS!), and they support wonderful causes like the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.
We’re only scratching the surface here, but these are the kind of companies we love to work with both professionally and personally.
Window World’s products also have a ton of great features that appeal to us, and we can’t wait to share more, coming up.
Window World has commercials that state: “Not only do we stand behind our windows; we stand on them!” Jamin was really brave to stand on that window and test it out, even though Jason risked his life first to show us, because as you can see from those scars, garden stools can kill you. ;} Luckily, the Window World windows are extremely durable, for starters.
So we’ll be sharing a lot of the window replacement process in our home over the next few months. And we can’t wait to share about our own experience of working with the Window World team, the products’ features, and so much more. So stay tuned…

I have loved following along with your progress and I’ll be honest. I’ve been curious about all the little things since we are ready to replace windows in our own house as well. Glad that safety is a top priority for you guys. It’s a concern of ours as well.

We slowly replaced all our windows with window world. We were poor newlyweds with a baby… so it took some time. They were very patient with us as we did 2-3 windows at a time! Totally worth it, and the windows hold up beautifully. And warrantied even if a baseball comes through the window!

Right?! We were in awe of their warranty. In our last house, the seal broke on one of the windows, and since it was new construction, we were on our own to replace it. It just went bad over time so… good luck. We love that this is different, and if anything goes wrong with these, they will repair it!

We replaced our front windows last summer using Apex. I love the energy efficiency and they are just pretty! Windows are expensive so we’re saving up again for the back of the house.
