We’re back with a quick post today, because we want to hear from you!
Today’s topic: If this is a super fun slumber party that meets as often as we can circa 1995, and we’ve already spilled way too many beans for any amount of normal comfort in a crazy game of truth or dare because I got all kinds of awkward-hyper on a delicate combination of Twix + Diet DP hello high fructose corn syrup awkwardness-this is a high school analogy and I’m hypothetically 16 with the late blooming physique of a twelve year old who eats whatevshewants. No judgement…
So, back to the awkward part: I’ve shared too much. Like, to the point that you’re not sure you can be friends with me in real life because I might embarrass you at school by the lockers when I say hey! (a smige too overexcitedly) and you keep walking with a side smile pretending you don’t really know me. Because I wrote about feeding frozen processed chicken fingers to my kids when they they wanted pancakes, and I almost died in a croc store.
I’m a mom again, minus the ridiculous metabolism + 17 more years. + A feeewwww more pounds. But the high fructose made me do it. Can I come to playgroup?
Ramblings and drawn out, run on sentence metaphors aside…It’s totally your turn.
Here’s the deal: Just copy the text, and write your answers below in the comments. Any other info you’d like to offer, we’d love to hear. Answer as many or as little as you’d like! – Or option B: just leave a comment because aintnobodygottimeforthat but we’d still love to hear from ya!
…Or C: just ignore me and I can feel like more of a doofenshmirtz. And then drown my sorrows in something like a Twix/Dr. Pepper pie. Because this is now 2013, and thanks, Pinterest.
Thanks so much! We can’t wait to hear all about YOU:
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?

Do I really have to answer why I read this blog? It’s what friends do. Plus you make me laugh. Also, War Eagle! Oh, and we keep saying we are gonna have girls’ night slumber-party style but that has yet to happen…what a hot mess that will be! Love you and am so proud of all your success!

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Time & money. Money & time.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
That I’ll screw it up, and it won’t be worth my time & money. 😀
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
I love your humor and your style!
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
I just find it so inspiring that I always want to come back. You are both encouraging.
6. What would you like to see more of?
Your parenting posts. Lifestyle stuff. They’re pretty funny and I haven’t seen that side of you.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? – a toddler, a pregnancy, and motivation!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? – Fear of not liking it/permanence. I try to pin pin pin and look at the things I repeatedly like before I make a decision. When I see a picture that I love, I know that maybe some crazy idea will turn out well (and helps get my husband on board).
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! – Dark/masculine master room. When we first got married, I wanted to make sure our room wasn’t too girly. Now I’m not a fan at all, but fortunately we upgraded to a king bed – the perfect excuse to start over!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} – The home as it relates to the family.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? – I’ve been really enjoying the lazy girl series…I’m nothing if a bit lazy 😉 But really, the beautiful, organized homes with thousands of “systems” just aren’t realistic for me. We only have 1 tot now, so stuff hasn’t *completely* taken over us yet, but I’d like to keep it that way while making cleaning and staying organized easy and automatic.
6. What would you like to see more of? – Hard to say?
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? – No blog, so no real interest. i can of course just skip those so it wouldn’t offend if you did, but (in an honestly unsnarky way), I come here for a home blog, not a blogging blog, ya know?
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? – Maybe like a very very basic on how to *start* using power tools, but honestly, when I find a project, I send it over to my husband to do!
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. – Whoop!!! Gig’em Aggies!!!

Awe thanks for your answers, girl! I am WITH YOU on the toddler thing ;} I KNOW. And that no. 7 was not snarky at all. We’re getting a feel for what people want – so I totally get it! Thanks so much!

1. My greatest obstacle that I tackle with projects in my home is that I am a college student living at home with my parents, so my ‘home’ is my bedroom. If I had it my way, I would decorate our entire house, but for now I have a smaller space to work with and I struggle with finding a balance between it being both my place of rest and my workspace.
2. My biggest fears with starting a project are cost/waste (I always want to make sure that I am being resourceful and doing things with as little money as possible) and also making ‘permanent’ choices, such as making the first cut into a piece of wood, or getting started with a new paint color and knowing that it is more of a commitment once I take something from the pages of my sketchpad into reality. I handle these by stepping away and taking some time to be sure of what I want, although sometimes I dive right in and just go for it and see it through to the beautiful end result.
3. My worst ever fail was an entirely hot pink dorm room during my first year of college. It seemed like a good idea at the time… However, my roommate and I were nick-named ‘pink room’ and I think I lost a little bit of my vision from all of the glitter and rhinestones that were scattered throughout the room too. After I recovered from pink overload, I had just discovered this beautiful blog and I made a quilt using the fabrics featured in the ‘Big Girl Room Redo’ post, also working a lot more handmade pieces into my space (Home Depot clearance lumber & Minwax Early American for the win!). It felt much more like home to me.
4. Simple answer: I read the Handmade Home because I love it!
I can really relate to you Ashley. I don’t want to sound all creepy and weird but I honestly hope to be like you someday and I kind of model my vision for my mommy-years after the contents of this blog. It’s a beautiful sentiment of your family and your passion for design, and it truly resonates with my 21-year-old self.

5. I love the way that you put your own personal touch on everything and that you are not afraid to think outside of the box of safety.
6. I would like to see more on how you got to where you are today. I think aspiring designers could really benefit from your stories of school and how you got to where you are today 🙂
7. I do have a blog but it started as a make-up/beauty type blog and I am trying to move it over to more of a lifestyle blog. Also, I am trying to find a balance and the time to devote to developing it more (between school/work/family/friends/church it can be tough to find that groove)
8. Yes!! Anything that will ensure the safety of my precious fingers while using power tools is appreciated.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Finding the time to start AND complete them. There’s never enough time!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? Running out of steam…wasting money on something that doesn’t turn out the way I want it to.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! Our kitchen floor. It was covered in worn linoelum, but we could tell it had hardwood underneath. We pulled back a little bit to see how the wood looked, and what we saw looked good. In reality, though, there had been chunks removed and patched with plywood. We didn’t have $$ in the budget to lay a new floor at the time, so we painted it and are living with it for now. The whole process was such a disaster!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} To see your creative projects and get inspiration. I like your decorating style.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? Not sure what you mean by element…I like a lot of your DIY projects and have done several. Is that what you mean? We’ve made a few of your frames, I made two of your stuffed animals, and we’re planning to tackle the bed you made in your daughter’s room.
6. What would you like to see more of? Nothing in particular…maybe DIYs?
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? I do have a blog, but I like that this is a home blog. I wouldn’t be interested in seeing the topics mixed up very much.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? It’s not my thing (my husband runs the tools) but it would certainly make sense to include some of that in light of the projects you post. It wouldn’t seem out of place to me.
TJ says
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
A lot of our big projects require wood & working with power tools so the fact that we do not own a pickup is sometimes problematic in picking up wood from Lowes or HD and the fact that we live where it’s VERY warm & humid from say April to November it’s hard always execute them when you want to.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
We are generally fearless when it comes to projects. I think you kind of have to be to be creative.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
We have a bunch but most of them revolve around “styling” such as mixing patterns or thinking that something will work with what we already have in the space and then it doesn’t. But our worst is when we purchase large/expensive items (i.e. furniture that couldn’t be returned) that aren’t what we really wanted but we buy them anyway because we need something! We have since gotten that out of our system, thank goodness. And getting back on the horse is the easy part, it’s the learning to ride in a different way that’s hard.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
For the “straight talk”. I’ve said it before, you have the guts to write and post real thoughts and feelings in a blogosphere where you mostly find “perfection” posted. And quite frankly you have helped me personally get thru things. Will always be a cheerleader for ya!
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
I love the posts that are a “solution” to a problem that you came up with because we went through it and that’s what you tried and are willing to admit if it worked or not and then tell what else you tried. You are fearless! Fearless in your struggles and triumphs!
6. What would you like to see more of?
I’m not sure I have an answer. I think you do a great mix. Maybe more of how you handle motherhood… that’s all I got. ; )
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
I have tried doing the blog thing but Twitter is more me. My husband recently bought me my own URL for me to develop into whatever I want so we’ll see. I’m currently toying with going back into business for myself (shut it down when I got pregnant & now that he’s in school) ya never know. I personally wouldn’t mind the occasional mention of someone else’s blog but I come here for you guys so…
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Every once in a while it would be great. I’m pretty good with power tools and my husband rocks at it (do they even say rocks at it anymore?) but I think hearing it or seeing it could make your readers feel more empowered/I can do it too.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there.
Go Steele Knights! We’re in Texas so welcome the Friday night lights.

You mean CDO right cuz that would be in alphabetical order which is the way it NEEDS to be. ; )
Kelli says
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? A big problem that I have is that a lot of the projects I want to do are large scale, aka I need to rely on the hubs. He has a really physically demanding job so he’s basically useless after work (but aren’t most men?) so getting to projects like making a pergola (yours, in fact) or converting our upstairs hallway cabinetwasteofspace into a functional closet just don’t seem to happen.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? I guess the biggest fear is hoping it will turn out how I imagine it, and more importantly, if it actually fits/works with the space I intended for it to live!
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! Nothing I can think of off the top of my head 🙂
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} I can just totally relate! I love your keepin’ it real commentary- it doesn’t feel all formal and uptight. You aren’t afraid to admit when something is difficult or when something failed. I think that’s SO important to hear in a world full of Pinterest envy. Everyone is so hard on the way their homes look these days because of that, but people fail to recognize the magic didn’t just happen overnight (more than likely) and the final picture you are seeing was unlikely the first attempt! So, thanks 🙂
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? I really love the lazy girl guide section. I love hearing about your ideas on how to streamline your home and processes to be more effective. I live in a small house (right under 1600 square feet — i know right? Not that small considering homes in the 50s averaged around 1100- so quit your bitchin’ Kelli). But still, it feels like a challenge, especially storage space solutions (there is ONE multipurpose closet… hence the desire to convert my cabinetwasteofspace into something more practical). I am not pregs with my first kid and I want to make sure my house doesn’t become overrun with junkgalore. How do you keep your spaces kid-free? Or are you just snappin’ photos when they’re snoozin’? 😉
6. What would you like to see more of? Basically keep doing what you’re doing!
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? Nah, I’ll just make the husband do it! Hahah! He’s such a perfectionist, he’d never let me do it anyway 🙂
9. Will you block me If I said I hate football?
10. LOL

Re: 5. Do you mean without them in the photos? I make Jamin herd them out of the room like small cattle when I’m trying to snap, or wait until one is at preschool/the others are in school… But they’ve been trained to step back unless I beg them to smile for ten minutes. ;} As far as their toys… we just cram a bunch of stuff out of the way. ;}
Re: 9. HAHA! No. I watch it because I’m southern and it’s just an expectation for me to wear something cute and eat good food and be social. I know. people now are fainting everywhere uponst reading this. Also, uponst is a new word. ;}
Kelli says
Well, mostly I meant that there is never a kid toy in sight! But I need to remind myself, you prob shoved all that stuff out of the way and then it crept its way out of hiding 3 seconds after the photo was taken. 🙂 So many people with young kids (let along three) just have piles and pile of kid junk everywhere! But yours never looks that way (cue: Pinterest envy). I’ve actually always been really jealous of the football loving variety BECAUSE I want to dress up and pig out. So many people have awesome get together for that, it seems like a great way to connect with family and friends. Additionally, uponst should def be put into Webster.

Here ya go:
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Our biggest obstacles are the cost and time–due to 4 kids and homeschooling and hubbie’s job that has him traveling a good bit. Both my husband and I have a ton of ideas, and wow does our house still need some work, but those two factors stop us dead in our tracks. One day though, one day!!!!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? I fear doing the wrong thing & regretting it down the road. But that’s come on just in the last few months for some reason. I think baby #4 scrambled my brain a little! 🙂 I’ve been paralyzed on covering our sofa pillows & some other design decisions lately, but I’m hoping it’s just a phase.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! I mentioned this in a comment the other day…when we repainted our kitchen cabinets inside & out we used regular old latex & they peel like craaaazzzzy now, especially inside. And we did the same thing on all if out trim in the house, and it’s peeling too. Our three-year-old daughter likes to peel the door frames when no one is looking! FUN STUFF! We need to fix it but it seems like a huge & not very dramatic change type of project. You know, one of those this is so not fun so I’m going to put it off for a decade or two things?
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} It’s fun & funny & real & inspiring! No haughty looking down your nose design or my house/life/children are so perfect attitude here. Just real life with some pretty thrown in!
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? I like the tutorials and the little update/reviews of items in your home. But I LOVE the funny kid/roach/paranoia stories! And this Q&A series has been fun too.
6. What would you like to see more of? I’ve read where you’re thinking of starting consultations again–I’d love that. More mood boards maybe?
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? I used to have a blog but not anymore. So I’m not so interested in that.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? Maybe a little.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. For Highschool I’ll say Go MCHS Jags! And GO Rison Wildcats! And for college I’ll say GO MSU Dawgs!!!!!
10. There is no 1o. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird. Haha! I like even numbers too. I used to keep my radio & TV volume on only even numbers, you know back when I had room in my brain for that kind of crazy! Thank you for the great questions & for caring about your readers. I’m pretty new, but I’m loving your blog, & stop by every day!
Rachel says
This is the slowest work week for me EVAH, so I totally have time for that! 🙂
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
I love to change things all of the time, and my husband is so reluctant to change. So, I just do it anyway, and tell him that he’s “going to love it!!”. Also – budget. Even though I’m super frugal and DIY most things – our budget is keeping me from doing what we really need to do to the house. (i.e. replacing 20 yr old carpet and linoleum. blech.)
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? I fear being too safe. I’m learning that fully planning out a space before jumping the gun (because ICAN’TWAITTOSTART) is helping me put together a finished, grown up, layered space that is unique and very “us”.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! Painting our living room and kitchen as soon as we bought our house – instead of really thinking out what our style is, what feel we wanted for the whole house, future home plans, etc. I have a better feel for what my style is now than I did when I was a 23 yr old newlywed. And the brown and tan are burning my eyes. Can’t wait to repaint!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
Your kitchen is what brought me to your site. Then you started reading my mind and writing about all of the things I’ve been processing in regards to our home (doing what you love, decluttering, bereaved planking).
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
I love that you do what you love – what works for you and your family – not your neighbor, not your mom, not the person who may want to buy your house someday. And I love your honesty about things.
6. What would you like to see more of?
Keep doing what you’re doing, girl!
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
I do! And yes!
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Yeah! Maybe some ideas for beginners whose husbands are afraid she will cut her fingers off because maybe she has a history of injuring herself.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. Woohoo! We are so excited in our house! Hook’em! and Go Cocks! (<— that is by marriage, and I still feel uncomfortable saying that)

No. 9 : HAHAHAHA I can’t bring myself to say that, either. Hysterical!
Liz R. says
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Probably money. We have so many things we would love to do to our house, but we have a small budget, so a lot of things get put on the “someday” list. I’m all for DIY, but you still need mulah to buy wood, drywall, paint, etc.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
Will this turn out like I imagine? And I just go for it. I find that often things take a turn and surprise you and you end up liking them better. And sometimes it actually does turn out like you wanted. And sometimes you have A HUGE FAIL and then you move one and try again. Also, I am the most critical judge of things I make and most people can’t even see the “flaws” that I do. I try to keep that in mind and remember that a little imperfection is beautiful too. Oh, and apparently all of that last part applies to outer beauty, too. lol
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
I bought bunting curtains from IKEA for my daughter’s nursery, but I didn’t like the red flags on them and wanted pink instead. So I figured I could just paint over the red easy peasy. WRONG. The pink paint just made the red even darker. So then I cut out a bajillion little triangle flags out of pink fabric (different sizes, mind you) and HAND SEWED them on because I was scared of my sewing machine. It took years. But I finished them and vowed to just buy curtains with the colors I wanted next time.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
I love your honesty and your humor and your creativity. I LOVE your home with all of it’s bright beautifulness and handmade touches. Even if a post is about something I’m not interested in, I will usually read it anyway because I know I will at least be entertained and probably learn something.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Projects that are doable.
6. What would you like to see more of?
I love your easy peasy sewing projects that help me gain a tiny bit more confidence to actually make those things myself.
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
Yes. And sure.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Yes.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? –> Money and time. I think what I need most is to give myself some time and materials to just keep attempting, but so far I haven’t been able to buckle down and do it.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? –> I’m afraid that I’ll mess up something in a way that can’t be fixed. My Dad taught me to face fear by facing the worst-case scenario and moving on, so that’s what I usually do. “If I mess up the curtains, I’ll have wasted some time and money. That’s the worst case? OK, I’ll do it.”
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! –> I don’t have one “worst fail” but when I moved into my condo and was trying to make it less ugly (mrsbomb.com/31/the-ugly-condo), I definitely made a lot of decisions that I would do differently if I knew then what I know now. I chose some not-right paint colors and tried to just fill space instead of watching for more quality, meaningful furniture and accessories. I had a lot of redoing and replacing to do.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} –> I love that you show your personalities in your designs and decisions. A lot of other bloggers’ spaces start to look the same, but what I see on The Handmade Home has unmistakable character, which is something I’d like to develop like to have in my own home.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? –> I really liked the “Lazy Gal” series that you did. Besides that, I just love seeing your designs and spaces – they give me great ideas and inspire me!
6. What would you like to see more of? –> Hmm I can’t think of anything… I’m easy-going and I’ve enjoyed all of your posts!
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? –> Yes (www.mrsbomb.com) and I’d love to read some tips from y’all but I love what you’re doing now so I’m very ok with not having it, you know?
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? –> Sure…? I’m not using any power tools with my projects right now, but I wouldn’t mind some tips/pointers.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. –> GOOOO Appalachian!
10. There is no 10. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird. –> I’m OCD too…and an accountant. I wouldn’t have been able to leave the list at 9 either 🙂

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Money and time
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
That it will look like a third-grade craft I made in Sunday school. I try not to invest too much money in projects because, often, that’s exactly how mine look.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
Some recent homemade notecards are popping into mind, but there have been numerous.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
I’ve been reading since the Supablogga days! Love the humor, the fun stories, and the inspiration that I just might be able to do something cool with my house one day.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Love the family stories, and, I admit it–I love the freebies.
6. What would you like to see more of?
Maybe specific ideas for working within a budget (i.e. specific costs of a project and where you can/can’t cut corners)
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
Yes yes! http://www.tiffanynorris.com
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Nope–not that advanced yet.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there.
I would say Roll Tide, but I know that’s not welcome, so how about Go Cowboys! 😉
10. There is no 10. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird.
I hear ya. I have been known to add items to the grocery list to get it to an even 10.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Money!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? Will I have the energy to do/finish the project?
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! Special ordering dark wood blinds and then they just darkened the room WAAAYYY too much so we had to go back and get the white ones.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} I started reading because I got such a kick out of your stories.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? I really like the DIY projects and all the color you use so well.
6. What would you like to see more of? I like DIY projects but I also understand that you have kids to raise which is way more important.
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? No blog and I would just ignore those posts.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? Nah. I already know how to use them.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. We are not football fans and don’t watch any teams. I know, UnAmerican.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
my biggest obstacle is most def having a game plan. narrowing down your vision is important. i think people think you have to pull out all the stops with one room or it is an epic fail. i am guilty of it and i am an interior designer!!!! have inspiration and a starting point and go with it. sounds easy but i have to force myself to take my own advice with everything i do.
love this blog. you guys to great! xoxox from GA!

Great questions!
1. I have a hard time envisioning what I want, unless it’s blatantly copying what I see somewhere else! I wish I could better visualize what a completed project in a room will look like before I begin.
2. That I will totally mess it up!
3. Haven’t done too many projects yet, so no complete fails.
4. I love your use of color and personality in your home!
5. The overall vibe (sorry I can’t be more specific than that!)
6. ??
7. Yes! My photography site: http://www.simplyMphotography.com
8. Yes! More power! I’d love to feel more confident in that area.
Thank you!!

Hi! This is Victoria, from Valencia (Spain), there I go with the questions!!
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? I live in a small flat so big projects are no possible. I much prefer little projects or sewing projects.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? Never start any electricity or wood project as I’m useless with tools
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! I wanted to give hexies a try and have done it but with small ones uysssss no way. I wanted to make a little table runner and has ended in the rubbish!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} Because your style when writing is fresh, just that, a woman walking through marriage, kids and life and not presenting her life as absolutely perfect as some other bloggers do which I can’t understand why they do it.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? Your style in mixing colours, furniture, etc..
6. What would you like to see more of? more sewing projects
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? Yes, I have a blog (kyvic100porcien.blogspot.com.es). I write my posts in Spanish and English. I wonder if you have the time to visit it and leave me a comment. Very grateful!!
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? Nooo, I’m useles with tools
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there.
10. There is no 1o. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird.
Carrie says
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Having the time to implement all of my great ideas. (I am convinced they are great anyway). And the money to pay for them!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? That it won’t turn out great and I will have wasted all of that time.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! Trying to make a red and brown living room work – when I pretty much hate red and brown. Tried to figure out a way to ‘fix’ it for three years before I realized the only thing to do was chuck the red and brown stuff and start over.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} I like that everything you write from parenting stuff to house stuff seems very authentic. And I love that your home is full of unique, meaningful, handmade stuff – that is totally what I am all about. Also love your great purging adventure.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Haha, see last question. The purging stuff, the meaningful artwork, the encouragement to just go for it.
6. What would you like to see more of?
I would like to see more small, simple projects. It is easy to get caught up in the big wow factor stuff but sometimes you really only have the time and energy for a little quick something. Love your style and would love to see some quick little projects that are still stylish and unique. (I know – easier said than done).
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? Yes and I love to hear about bloggy stuff.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Honestly, probably not. I don’t usually read about that kind of really technical stuff until I get to a point where I don’t know what I am doing and need help.
Donna says
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
My biggest obstacle without a doubt is lack of time. I have always worked full time, plus being a single mom of two, (one is grown, the other is 12 and active in sports) it is hard to find the time to get projects finished. I am the type that doesn’t want to quit working on a project until it is done. So if I know I can’t finish it quickly, I typically won’t start it. I am learning to adjust my way of thinking, and have started to slowly take on more in depth projects though, because I want a pretty house with pretty handmade things just like yours!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
I fear that what I think I can do isn’t as good as what I am really capable of doing. I haven’t tackled a major project yet that involves power tools, but I plan to soon. I currently live in military base housing, but will be moving into our own home in Georgia early next year. We plan to overhaul our kitchen similar to what you did, and I want to partially take down a wall between the kitchen and dining room. That scares me, but I am fortunate that my dad is incredibly talented with woodworking and house projects; he will be there to help me fix any major mistakes I make.
3. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
Reading your blog is similar to reading a really good book that you still think about the characters and the story even after you’ve finished reading it. In addition to loving everything about your home and loving all of your projects, I especially love the way you write about every day things. You talk to us readers as if we were hanging out in your kitchen sipping Diet DP or sweet tea. Living in the same little city as you right now I am always on the lookout for the Mills Fab 5. I saw you once last summer at AUM youth baseball – possibly leaving t-ball. Luckily I was alone when I saw you because I had one of those star struck moments where I was like OMG there they are in real life! LOL. And you know the story about meeting you at your yard sale which was so awesome.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
I love all the DIY projects – especially the rooms you created for your three littles. I am currently working on bedding for my son similar to what you created for Emerson, can’t wait to show you the finished product!
6. What would you like to see more of?
I really enjoy the lazy girl series.
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
I don’t have a blog, but have considered starting one when I move back to Georgia. It will probably be a different genre though. I have searched and searched for a blog about life on dialysis (my mom recently started dialysis and will be going on the kidney donor list soon). I think maybe she and I will start a blog together about living the best life possible while depending on a machine for her survival.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
YES! I would love to read about using power tools. I have built up a small collection of nice tools but haven’t used any of them yet. I am a little nervous but I know I just need to build up my confidence by making a few things
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there.
In our house we say “WAR EAGLE”!
Nikki says
I’m dying here because you’ve pretty much described my minus the DP…seriously, that stuff tastes like cough syrup. I just can’t.
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Indecision. Is that a word? Either way, it’s like hanging that picture frame or choosing a particular fabric for a throw pillow will be the defining decision of everything. It takes me forever to say “yes, ok. this.” – & when I finally do, I usually love the results, but I definitely feel like I need that push to pull the trigger.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? Honestly, by the time I start a project, I have created about a bajillion different scenarios in my head of how it could go. I figure one of them will be happen. It’s the moment right before starting that paralyzes me (see #1).
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! I think everyone does this, but when we first got married, I felt like the next thing to do was to go buy a ton of furniture that we would eventually grow into. Eventually, I’ve realized it wasn’t our style and so we’re slowly trying to re-work with what we’ve got. There’s nothing wrong with anything we have, but I haven’t quite figured out how to love my matchy-matchy dark wood bedroom set or how to breathe new life into it. I’m thinking new bedding…but what? It’s my current project.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}. I stumbled on your blog a few weeks ago from a Pinterest link and I’ve been a junkie ever since. Seriously love your style!
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics? I love that you’re not afraid of white. It seems like everyone is really quick to cover up a white wall, and you’ve actually made me rethink a few things. Also, I love your use of colors in fabrics and how it all feels casual without trying to hard. I’m really working on stepping out of the Pottery Barn box and making our home more of a reflection of our family and not a magazine spread that’s not liveable at all when you really consider it.
6. What would you like to see more of? I would love if you did a monthly (or more) Reader Re-Do. Like pick someone and create a moodboard or some ideas of things to add/change in a particular space.
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? I do 🙂
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? I think it’s interesting to see different techniques. It’s kind of hard to read about it with getting some visuals.
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there. Uhmmmm….well, our home team is the Miami Dolphins.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Money! I see amazing ideas but don’t always have the mulah to do what a want. Although this really makes me get creative sometimes and find things from thrift stores and yard sales to makeover!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
I started reading this blog when I really started decorating our home, so because of you I normally just dive in:) If I mess up, start over and try again! But getting started can be hard, narrowing down what I actually want to do and what my vision for a room might be.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
The time I started sewing curtains for my kitchen. Found the PERFECT fabric via fabric.com (thanks to you!!!)
Sewed my first panel ever,
put it over my kitchen,
admired my amazing beginner skills,
spilled smoothie on my new beautiful curtain,
washed & dried curtain,
BAWLED my eyes out because the curtain shrunk and I had to start all over – hahaha
Lesson Learned!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
I’ve read many blogs but seriously yours is the only one I keep coming back to. (Like the dessert you sneak on your diet because you have to have it:)
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Love the series, The lazy gal, the simple projects, all those! You are so relatable and real and funny. And seriously sweet, thanks a bunch for my ebook! Oh and ya’ll answer emails – amazing!
6. What would you like to see more of?
More sewing projects:)

If this comes through twice, I apologize. My dog decided to jump all over my laptop just after I hit submit the first time.
1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Time, Naptime is not long enough. I will be doing a happy dance once both my girls are in school full time. I guess I also need to get rid of my job between now and then. Then that would make money an obstacle too…
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? No fears really, just get frustrated when things don’t go my way.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! I’ve had plenty, but my jute rope lamp shade was pretty bad. I had to use two packages of rope to cover the lamp shade and didn’t realize the ropes were two different colors until I had hot glued it all on. It was purrrrty! Purrrty awful!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} Love your project tutorials, but I love your sense of humor most. Yours is the first DIY blog I started reading years ago and it’s the first I read every day. LOVE Y’ALL! I secretly think we would be BFF if you lived in NashVegas. LOVE your inspiration boards, they help inspire me. Would also like to see a series on single item inspirations. For instance, feature and item, anything, a book, a tree, a dress….. Then ask readers to comment on how that item might inspire them and in what way. All inspirations are born out of creativity, I’m really interested in what makes other “creatives” tick.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
TIME!!!! I have a 2 and a 4 year old and I teach preschool. Seriously. How do you get all of your projects done?!?!
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
I’m usually pretty fearless. I’m confident about my designs, know what I want, and go for it. I guess though… Time again. Getting it done in a timely manner.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
My first place was all paneling. The tiny bathroom had a gray, plastic-y paneling that I decided to paint lime green. Not only was it horribly bright and wrong for the space, the moisture on that surface made it bubble up. Beautiful.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
Great, realistic projects. We have a very similar style. You are in the same life stage as me (I think we are the same age!). Hilarious writing!
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
I like looking at the entire rooms and how you mesh everything together.

No time for that!
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Not really. Those posts aren’t really my thing. If I am planning on building something, I will look for a tutorial then rather than building something based on a post I saw. The amount that you post on that subject is fine right now.

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home? Money, confidence I can do bigger projects, not getting help when I really need it.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them? I have to ponder over what I want to do. If I really want to do something bad enough and I can envision it in my head on how to do the project, then I will work on it, but if I can visualize and see it in my head, I won’t even attempt it and I need to get over it and just jump in (after doing some homework about what I want to accomplish firs!).
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse! I’m really just now starting on the DIY train. My first project was to take a dining room table and paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint. I did all of my homework, knew what I wanted to achieve and I hate it!!! Now I’m mad at myself because I invested a lot of money in ASCP (for another project) and I no longer want to try it. I also want to re-do my dining room table and bring back the wood (again, need to learn how to do this!).
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer} I love your blog because you guys are “real”. You talk about the ups, downs, successes, etc. You have great insight when it comes to decorating and diy’ing.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?no specifics. I look forward to your posts.
6. What would you like to see more of? Keep doing what you are doing.
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff? I do have a blog, but don’t keep up with it. I never know what to write about. I would love to be able to post more, but since I really don’t have any followers, I have a hard time writing for myself. I’ve never been one to keep a journal, so I struggle to write just to write. I would actually love if I could find a successful blogger who would be willing to spend some mentoring time and help me get started, but I also don’t ever want to impose on anyone.
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things? I would love to hear more about using power tools. I love power tools, but never get the chance to use them. My husband actually owns quite a few, but they are buried deep in the recesses of his cluttered garage! This also is part 2 of question number 1… my husband is one of my obstacles and won’t help me dig out his tools for me to use so I could start a project. =)

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Besides budget, I think it’s expectations and fear of commitment. Perfectionist might just be too kind of a way of putting it. The little details are what trip me up on projects because I want it to look perfect. I also struggle with making a decision about what to do…which fabric/color/art/etc?
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
I always hope it will turn out as I see it in my head…or better….but I fear it won’t.
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
Painting a textured ceiling without protection. So, here’s the scoop….
I have what my seminary roommates referred to as my FTE, or Free Tuition Eye. I am legally blind in one eye and got support from the Vocational Rehabilitation office to help pay for school. So, while the eye saved me TONS of money on college and seminary tuition, it can be a nuisance at other times. I have to be very careful and protect my good eye well. I set out to paint my laundry room and after doing the walls I realized the ceiling most definitely needed to be done, too. As I put up the white primer on the ceiling I realized just how gross and yellowed it had become. For whatever reason, half the ceiling is smooth and the other is textured. Textured ceilings, as I found out, are a pain to paint….especially for this perfectionist. Those nooks and crannies are hard to get into. The textured ceiling also dripped a lot of paint because I was putting on more trying to get into each crevice. So here I am painting the ceiling at 10:30pm and low and behold…Kiiz 2 in my eye…the good one. My vision becomes cloudy and panic thoughts in my head of “I could be blind forever!” ran through my head as I ran to the kitchen and began flushing my eye out while at the same time calling my mom to get her opinion on whether or not to head to the ER…washing your eye out and talking at the same time is oh so difficult! I’m talking, this skills should go on my resume. Plus, I’m trying to be all calm so I don’t freak out my mom. As we discuss the options I remember I know an eye doctor who works teaches a Sunday School class in our youth ministry so I give the good doctor a call….bless his heart, it’s late and he has better things to do with his life, like eat Dr. Pepper jelly beans…which happen to be his favorite and I just so happen to know where he keeps his stash in the church house! So, he advises me on how to proceed and fortunately saves me a ton of money by not having to pay an ER copay. I shoulda taken the 20 seconds to go grab a hat and some goggles and saved some drama for some other mama.
Oh, and P.S. – this incident was almost 4 weeks ago and I honestly found a bit of white paint STILL in my hair…and I promise I wash my hair often! Another reason for a hat. At least it matched the gray hairs that this incident caused!

Don’t you know it! I have to create an elaborate grid to track 8 high school football schedules and try to hit up as many schools as I can during the season. Love those games where students go to both school…two birds, one stone. With 8 schools, you kind of have to be impartial, but having grown up here I will give a shout-out to my alma mater…West is best!

8. Yes. I have some, but I don’t know how to use them. Boohoo.
9. Go Cowboys! (Ok I could care less, but that’s where my hubby is from, so Whooo hooo Texas)
10. It bothered me, too. So…yay, 10!

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Indecision! I can never, ever, ever, make up my mind and KEEP it made up. It makes the amount of time to complete a project ridiculous.
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
Fear of messing it up and wasting my time/money. I’m working on a huge vintage couch redo right now and literally right after I made the decisions and spent the money for the materials I would need, World Market came out with a couch that is SO close in style and pretty close in cost that I wanted to smack my head on the wall. Hellllooooo, where was this thing a month ago? Literally. A month. So frustrating. But I’m sticking it out now, there is no going back!
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
Crochet. I am one of those people who dabbles in a bit of everything and usually does pretty well. And then I got on the handmade wagon and tried crochet which is *suppose* be easier than knitting. Yeah…not going so well. Who wants an increasing in size dish cloth for Christmas? Because that’s about all I’ve mastered.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
I’ve read this blog since it was Pure and Lovely. It was one of the first blogs I started reading when I started blogging (two blogs ago for me, but who’s counting?) and I feel like it is one of the few that has stuck to the general feeling and style that it started out with. And I mean that in a good way. Plus, you come across as extremely REAL. Some bloggers who’s style I may really love, who may even fit my style better than The Handmade Home does, come across cold and bitchy. Your personality brings so much to the table, it makes me come back to read more.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Your originality is what I enjoy most. Design trends and styles are fun to follow and try out, but some people get lost in them and that is what it becomes all about. This blog is different and I love that about it. You know how to use a trend to your advantage while still maintaining your original style.
6. What would you like to see more of?
Nothing in particular, just keep doing what you’re doing!
7. Do you have a blog? Would you like to hear more about thatkindastuff?
Yes, but it only has one post. As I said before, I’m on my third blog. I blog and then get burnt out. This time, I’m taking my time and posting for fun. If that means my blog sits with only one post, so be it! It’s also a decor blog, so keep what you’ve already got, coming! 🙂
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
Sure, I need to stop relying on the husband so much. Poor guy didn’t realize that when I wanted to buy the power tools he wanted, it was so he could help me with MY projects, not to work on his own. 😉
9. Football starts tonight : give a shout out to your team! Woot woot! – that was from Jamin. He had to throw that in there.
Gooo!!! I have no idea because I don’t follow sports!!! Yeah!!! My husband would be so ashamed right now, haha.
10. There is no 1o. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird.
10 questions, 10 answers. 😉

1. What are the greatest obstacles you tackle when it comes to projects in your home?
Planning, having confidence in the plan, and then actually doing it
2. What are some of your biggest fears when it comes to starting a project? How do you handle them?
That I’ll waste my time or money, that I won’t like the result (even if it turns out right) … so our house-into-home process is verrrrrry slow
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
I haven’t taken that many risks … I fell in love with a mango rug and impulsively purchased it. It doesn’t work where I planned for it to be, but I’m still crossing my fingers that I’ll find a place for it someday!
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}
You write beautifully and I find your posts inspiring.
5. What is your favorite element that you find here? Any specifics?
Genuine-ness (what’s the word I’m looking for?)
8. Would you like to hear more about using power tools on the technical side of things?
I’m still a baby in the process of DIY so if you post it, I may bookmark it for later … just in case
10. There is no 1o. I’m OCD and while I usually prefer odd numbers in my lists, nine felt weird.
I do the same thing when creating assessments for my students! I want total points to add up to a number ending in 5 or 0! 🙂

Trusting my instincts. I am scared to go for it. I am worried that things won’t look good.

I am afraid that it won’t turn out like I envision. Well, I procrastinate until I muster up the courage to go for it!
3. Want to share your worst fail ever? We all have them, and while we totally hate it for you… Spill it. And how you got back on that proverbial horse!
I am in the midst of one right now. I bought chairs from a second hand shop with plans to chalk paint them and reupholster the backs and seats. Well to my utter dismay they have 70 billion staples. They are cast offs from a hotel so they are upholstered for use by the masses. Shot me now. I have almost given up, but for my friend who has promised to help me rip them apart. She is a good friend.
4. Why do you read The Handmade Home? {Train wreck does not count as an answer}

Hi! I love how fearless you are in tackling big projects (atleast what I think are big projects!). Love all the new ideas in your blog. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I was at Micheal’s recently. We don’t have a Micheal’s equivalent in India or atleast in South India. I work as a travel researcher and have my hands full with kids so my blog is all about quick decor and I mean quick so I admire the way so many of you start from scratch and take basic to fantastic! Do check out my blog when you have time.
Cheers!
