diy shelving with cabot stain {studio sneak peek}

Hey lovely friends! We’re back today, with a few changes we’ve been up to in our home lately. We feel like we’re scrambling, we’re so anxious to get our home settled for this homeschooling gig, between the studio (see former veranda which I have now dubbed the studio-I like to make up borderline pretentious names for my home) + playroom for the kids (which is really just code for more technology + books in my newly opened eyes in the land of all things learning) I think there’s something about it that will just make me feel better, as a mom, to have our rooms settled. (I’m doing that freak out thing where I need to settle down and just let it happen.) But it was time for a few changes in the once-upon-a-time Veranda department…

When I posted this photo on Instagram, people were not prepared. And I apologize deeply for rocking your world… I really do. First homeschooling now this?! Who am I?! Also, apparently I don’t properly dress our children anymore, so there’s that. De-friend me now.

There was passionate weeping and gnashing of teeth. Change is good y’all. I promise it was time for the aqua stripes to go, for something fresh. So when Cabot asked us to try out their fabulous stain, we were all for using it for a little extra storage and a sneak peek of our studio.

I think that one of the best solutions for odd spaces is shelving. Homes can always use extra storage, from functional to pretty little displays. So with some Cabot stain, 1 x 8’s and a few brackets… we decided to put together a fresh space.

We simply brushed the stain on – our color: Cinnamon Toast in Satin. We waited for it to dry, and then added another coat. There was a little bit of a learning curve, because Cabot is a little different than what we’re used to. No need to use any wood conditioner, and no worries about that splotchy effect that sometimes happens later. Once it was dry, the finish is absolutely drool-worthy in the land of all things beauty and wood.

We are so pleased with the new feel of the room. It’s a total work in progress right now, and I’m currently searching for the perfect chandy in between lesson plans, blog posts, and dirty laundry. But it’s a little somewhere in between a fun collected feel and vintage industrial. With a touch of glam, or course.

I’ll splurge more on the deats later, but see that peek of aqua in the corner? Don’t worry. We kept some of the touches in the space… including the ceiling. For now, anyway… So haters gonna hate, but it’s still there. A splash of it, anyway. Pinky promise.

The finish is just perfect for this little space. We really love Cabot stain.

Our little vintage camera collection is slowly growing. We even sent that film off a few weeks ago (yep, it took us that long) so stay tuned!
