Lantern light fixtures have been pretty popular for a while now.

I’ve always loved them and my Pinterest boards are prime evidence. Tons, and I mean tons, of lovely indoor hanging lanterns.

Though I really love this look, I wasn’t planning on bringing it into our new house. We had a lantern in our last living room and I like to try new things.
But I was getting pretty tired of the amazing modern light that our living room had been sporting for six months while I waited for inspiration to strike. When I say modern light fixture, I mean a light bulb hanging from the ceiling. Yep, classy.
So, while I was waiting for a genius DIY light fixture idea, I came across a three-foot-tall lantern clearanced at TJ Maxx. It was missing the glass and was $29. I immediately thought of our living room and its desperate need for a light fixture. The missing glass just made it easy to change the bulbs!
I brought it home thinking it would be a good place holder until I found just the right light, but after hanging it, I really liked it!
And it didn’t hurt that it was a really easy project. We drilled a small hole in the top, just big enough for the pendant kit to get through. And we added an old fashioned bulb for a little extra flair. I wanted the bulb to hang halfway down the lantern, so the tiny piece of twine that you see keeps the lantern from sliding down on top of the socket.
It felt like a unique spin on the traditional lantern light fixture with the white, aged patina.
I also loved that it was a bit “over-sized” for the room. It makes more of a statement, I think.
Much better than a lone, sad bulb. It hangs directly over the coffee table, so we don’t have to worry about it getting bumped into.
Now, the living room finally feels finished. Well, at least it is for a few weeks. I’m always changing things up and moving furniture around. It might drive my husband a little crazy, but what else is a design blogger to do? That’s half the fun!
Thanks for letting me drop in and share my latest project, Ashley and Jamin!
