Maybe we’re cheesy people, but we’re all about simple, handmade, DIY gift ideas at this time of year. So I guess we say, bring on the cheese. And today we wanted to share one of those with you: DIY coffee cozies!
They’re the cutest little unexpected flourish and the easiest little afternoon project you can think of. Whether prepping for a party {and an easy take home for guests after a gathering} or a great way to slip a gift card into a cup for all things teachers and gift giving… it’s a great and easy to go. And despite the hand stitching {which is totally optional} these are no sew coffee cozies. Yes, please! {I’m all about pillows and simple curtains, but seamstress I am not.}
coffee cozies; Here’s what you’ll need:
• multi colored felt sheets
• coffee cups of the to go variety – especially the kind with the cardboard addition – you can cheat and use this as your cozy template
• needle + embroidery thread + scissors
• embellishments in the form of fun vintage buttons or handmade pompoms {we have a full tutorial for these here}
• templates {to cut out your flower shapes} – I simply googled and found what I needed
• fabric glue
coffee cozies: getting started.
Taking your cardboard section of the coffee cup, stretch it out and trace it onto some felt. Cut it out.
If you don’t have the cardboard piece to use as your cozy template {you can always nab one at your local Starbucks as these are a pretty standard fit} they also have some online or, measure with your cup and cut accordingly. I like to do as little work as possible when it comes to simple creations, so we do recommend by starting with a cup that already has the cardboard lining in tact.
coffee cozies: adding stitching
Once that’s ready, you’re ready to add whatever stitching you want.
For this one, I used a simple blanket stitch. Check out the how to here.
You’ll simply wrap it around the cup and finish off with a nice piece of fabric glue, but to begin, make the flower embellishment, first.
Lay the templates down on whatever color needed, and layer into the design that you want.
Then have fun {optional} hand stitching your flowers.
coffee cozies: attaching
Join it to your coffee cozies with more fabric glue, or stitch it to the back. And you’re done!
For the pompom coffee cozies, we did the very same thing, then added a pompom to the cozy, stitched through the back.
Check out the full how to for our pompoms, here.
Tada! No matter what you choose to add, you can certainly customize your coffee cozies as you want. Just for fun!
We even added a few cardboard straws in various colors to add an additional pop.
It makes them even cuter, especially for gift giving! They can use them on their cups again and again!
And there ya have it! A cute little DIY, especially easy for the holidays coming our way.
As always, let us know if you choose to make some. We’d love to hear!
Have an inspired day!

Please do not refer to hand crafted gifts as “cheesy”. To gift a hand crafted item is very special. It takes time, thought and creativity and, of course, money to make a special gift for that special person(s). This is the only way I can afford to acknowledge all the people who are special to me on occasions throughout the year. I hope I have not been operating under the feeling that my gifts are CHEESY! This sure hurt my self esteem. Perhaps I have over reacted, but I don’t think so.

Hi, Linda – That comment was more of a self-deprecating comment for myself, in a joking way. I think maybe you misread my intentions. I love being cheesy and think that cheesy is good when it comes to gifts. I think maybe you really read into this. I would not be sharing any of this post or idea if I thought it were bad. I don’t really understand what happened. Please don’t base your self esteem on my posts here. I sincerely hope you have an amazing day.

These are just precious! Thank you for sharing such a great handmade idea. They’re especially perfect for teachers’ gifts too. Things add up quickly over the holidays and it can be hard to balance it all. For what it’s worth, I was not offended by your “cheesy” statement. I get what you mean 😉

I love this idea and I’m excited to make some for my coffee and “to go” drink loving friends. Cheesy has gotten a bad wrap from snobbish people. Hand made gifts come from the heart and are made with love and magic. Never think that anything you create is substandard, no way! The more cheesy the better! Thanks, Denise
