alice in wonderland tea party {no sew tent}

We’re so excited to be a part of the Online Fabric Store Creating with the Classics challenge! What was the challenge, you may ask? 8 bloggers were assigned 8 classic books at random… and asked to create something with it from their fabulous Premier Prints line.
This is the part where I grin goofily and jump up and down with my eye bulging in a slightly creepy, over-the-top way… because we were totally in. Yes, please.
We scored were assigned Alice in Wonderland. Which was right up our alley.
And so with a little brainstorming… {and these awesome vintage jewels as a bit of inspiration… hello typography} we chose Raji Spirit Blur Slub Fabric, Outdoor Polkadot Yellow, and Canopy Storm Twill to conjure our own little version of Alice.
Because what else does one do when they’re assigned Alice in Wonderland… than celebrate with an all out color-infused tea party, of course!
While I love to sew, sometimes all the fun is in seeing what you can manage without whipping out that sewing machine.
We flipped a little crate over, and topped it with this fabrical goodness.
And with a few of our own touches…
It was quickly transformed into our own little wonderland.
The power of a few good fabrics…Â they really speak for themselves.
Alice, The Mad Hatter, and the White Rabbit were all in attendance for the summertime soiree.
Sometimes it’s fun to just shop around the house and look at what excitement you can infuse by using old pieces in unexpected ways.
We threw in a few pillows + some sugary goodness… and the kids had a ball.
Want to make your own little summertime escape? Here’s the simple how-to… {even easier than our teepee.}
We built a simple box, from these 10 little pieces of wood: 4 @ 2 x 2 x 6 + 6 @ 1 x 2 x 6’s with some simple screws. {Remember, you can have them cut for free at your local home improvement store} and drilled them together. The total size was a 54 x 54 square. We even anchored the legs at the bottom with braces, and for the topmost pieces notched the wood so it can sit on top.
This makes for easy unassembled tent-age when you’re done. Yes, tentage is a word. Simply unscrew, and stow away for the next adventurous day.
We draped it with two king sized sheets, and held with clothes pins on the sides and in the middle. Then we cut slices of fabric at the same widths and after playing with them on the floor to reach the right lengths, hit them quickly with a hot glue gun on the edges. We looped them face down, on the inside of the frame, underneath the sheets.
Tada! Cue extra shot of wonderland fun. The best part? When I’m ready to use this little tent for something else, these strips can be salvaged for something else.
It’s how I like to roll, anyway.
Alice and her friends had a blast.
And I am in love with this fabric.

The tent is adorable and so are the kids. How much fun for them. I think sometimes with all the gizmos out there out kids don’t have the opportunity to use their imagination. Next in line will be a tent or a fort 🙂 Wonderful post!!

Hey Tania! Some of it is outdoor. But we would take it down anyway, because of the humidity where we live, as well as Bertha the gargantuan pecan tree. ;} That’s why we made it so easy to take down because it keeps it clean and manageable.

Adorable! This is magazine worthy! I am totally amazed and blown away by how you can pull this together?? I only have two kids (under 3 years) and I can’t imagine ever having the time to do all this cuteness. Wow- you made cake balls, printed and cut out labels, got complementary candies and straws, and made those pom poms too?? I feel so inadequate, haha. What is your secret?
Hey Alanna! You are too sweet. Just a few things to clarify {give you a realistic picture} ;} : My kids are older now so that makes it easier. I was throwing food on the ground to them like chickens when I had three that were 3 and under so I’ve been there! Hang in there. It gets easier. ;} The cake balls are from Starbucks, because I didn’t have time. I am a color dork so that matching stuff was just fun and I need to get out more, and my youngest totally sat in dog poop by accident right after we shot that. Whoops! Reality stinks. But its also much more fun that way. ;} I’m right there with you! Thank you for your kind words.
