So, even though we’ve been at a total stand still with our little rehab project, {hopefully not too much longer!} we’re still planning furiously behind the scenes. Because we know that once we hit the ground running, we’ll hit it fast. We have quite a few things we know that need to take place in the middle of this process, and we can’t wait to get started.
And today, we thought we’d talk about the hallway bathroom.
Here’s a few little photos from when we first took possession of the house in mid May. It hadn’t been touched in quite a while. And by quite a while, I mean maybe since I was like, three.
I can honestly say, we didn’t mind it that much. It has things about it that we find charming. But we knew it was time to give it a few much needed updates.
We’ve begun the process of demo. The layout is basic and easy, so we decided to keep it simple in terms of layout. What we’re really bringing to the table are a few practical changes that will make more sense in the space, as well as aesthetically pleasing ones.
See the way that door opened once upon a time? Oh so awkwardly against the closet? That closet is becoming more of a cabinet. Since we wanted to initially push that back {and after ten seconds realized that wasn’t possible because – duh- the staircase below} we want to close up the bottom which is super pointless, and give it a built in feel.
Yes, we still have quite a lovely collection of trash waiting for us in the random areas… such is the life of construction.
The main entry door will be replaced with a sliding barn door built by us, to save space. {We’ll add a lock for privacy} and the wall closest in this photo has been busted out, so that we can have built in shelving and storage for towels. This space will actually be working quite hard to earn its keep with all things space and functionality by the time we’re done.
At first, this will be a shared space for all three kids, but eventually, just the boys, once we build the addition and spread out.
You can see a little bit of a glimpse of that area we plan to utilize for towels, to the right of this shot. It was wasted space, and we intend to take advantage of every piece of square footage in this house. It’s almost like taking down an old puzzle and then reconfiguring your own version all over again.
And here’s the tub area now. Looking straight down into the main living space.
I’m thinking of leaving a window here so that you can look down into the kitchen while you shower.
Jk. Just wanted to make sure you’re paying attention.
Yes, this painting is still hanging. I have no idea why. I think we need to move it somewhere as a permanent tribute. But we also plan to center this toilet {as it was oddly off to the side in the old configuration} and have plenty of shelving above for even more storage. A little like this, but with sconces.
But there was some major EW going on below that toilet on the subfloor, so we need to take care of all things water damage.
No, this never gets old.
So without further ado, a few things we have up our sleeves for hallway bathroom design elements. As usual, going completely out of order…
2. 5. + 14. Tile and Color
We knew we wanted a classic look throughout the house. We’ve already covered a little of our paint colors in the home, but for this space, it only felt appropriate to go blue. While most of the rooms upstairs will have blue headboard ceilings with white walls, this room will be reversed. You’ll find SWIMMING {HGSW1327} on the walls, and a simple PURE WHITE {HGSW4006} on the beadboard ceilings.
For the floor, we selected a simple penny tile. I adore the clean, classic feel of an easy-to-care-for penny tile. Especially in a kids’ bathroom. You just can’t beat it. And the rest of the tile will be a simple combo of this tile, here + here. It’s a bit of a twist on the classic, with a soft, wavy feel. Especially when layered in a brick pattern with stripes. We plan to take it all the way up to the ceiling of the shower/bathtub area for a great, clean feel.
Which brings us to the…
15. Bathtub
At first, I really wanted a clawfoot tub. I had my heart set on it. But aren’t budgets fun? Oh and you know what else? Inspectors and septic tanks. {See: stabby emoji} Because we’re being told {once again} what to install. So naturally, we will comply… but I haven’t given up hope for my clawfoot in the master addition. Why? Because good things come to those who wait, and I’m not finished yet, y’all. You shall see the clawfoot obsession return in my very own master when the addition is done. Stay tuned. I had to remind myself that even though this is our main bathroom for now, it’s not our bathroom forever. And it made more sense for something simple with the kids.
But we’re adding some nice little custom touches with the basics, to take it up a notch. We selected a tub similar to this, with no pre-drilled holes. And shelving within the shower for plenty of storage.
13. Fixtures
That means that the fixtures {we love this rain shower here– especially for growing boys} can have more of a custom feel than your typical placement. If things work out, we’ll be able to place the faucet in the middle of the wall, but the shower head on one end. Stay tuned.
Because space is tight, instead of a typical shower curtain, we’re adding frameless glass with a swinging door. It’s a little extra touch that helps keep the space open, and adds extra oomph without closing it off with a curtain. It also helps keep moisture contained, so that the ventilation {we’re adding two vents because it’s a tight space with a bead board ceiling} will work properly.
7. Vanity
We liked the clean classic look of this vanity with plenty of storage. And especially the grey, to bring in a touch of depth to the space with color.
And we were looking for something a bit more substantial in the knobs, so of course we turned to our fave source for hardware. We love this milk glass in a beautiful classic look to contrast with the modern feel of the vanity.
6. Sconces + Mirrors
Paired with mirrors similar to these, we love the classic look of these clean, classic porthole mirrors for the boys. They open, so we plan to create more space in the walls with a little idea we have up our sleeves. Stay tuned for that one, too.
The ceiling light you saw in the before, is actually staying. There was something about its charm that we wanted to keep {along with the old porcelain toilet paper rolls}. Hey, it’s in the little things. And though we decided to mix our metals throughout the house, we definitely stuck to a basic polished chrome feel in the bathrooms. We love the classic feel, and decided to build off that old look. Three sconces similar to these across the vanity should bring in plenty of light.
3. Faucets
We love the classic feel of these faucets on each sink.
Accessories – The thing I love about bathrooms is building off the classic basics with some awesome fun accessories.
1. Rug
In something simple because we want to show off as much of that fun penny tile as possible. And a little bit of personality to boot.
4. Towel rack
We plan to run towel hooks underneath the window for a great space and all things towel drying. We’ll need all the help we can get, and these tie in the entire look.
8. Stool
This adorable little stool. We’ve already found about a zillion little uses for it, and we haven’t even moved in yet but went ahead and ordered it since they’re still not quite tall enough to reach what they need. And something stable yet stylish always helps.
9. Towels
A splash of color mixed in with our usual whites is always fun. This is the same company we ordered from for our last bathroom redo, and our favorite purples. We love this fresh pop of orange!
10. Owl toothbrush holder
Owls are their current animal obsession. So when we saw this little toothbrush holder, we couldn’t resist.
12. WC sign and Shelving Bracket
Stay tuned. We’re currently revamping and expanding our studio, and these will be available through us, soon as a part of our fall home line. We love this little ‘water closet’ sign for the barn door, and the brackets for storage over the toilet area. We can’t wait to put it all together!

Have you guys taken on a bathroom redo lately? What are some of your favorite pieces you used? What about storage options? We’d love to hear!
I love this. I also can’t imagine how frustrating this entire process must be. I know you guys just want to be settled. Your house will be beautiful though!
That vanity! Those towels! Tile! Can’t wait to see it all come together. You guys rock!
