simple ways to lighten and brighten your spaces

Recently, we put together some ideas for a client who just moved into a new home. Everything in their home was neutral, and she had a lot of gray. She was looking for ideas to build off of things she already had. We thought this would be a great opportunity to share some solutions that we came up with, as well as talk through ways to spruce up your home. Maybe the changes are smaller and you just need simple changes that make a big impact! Here are a few of our favorite finds to do just that. Living Room Accessories:

Furniture + Frames

For all things blank walls in a home: A cabinet like this one for extra storage, and photographs as seen here up the wall. {Inspiration photo from here!} These frames tend to keep it more affordable, and it’s an awesome way to display family photos over time. Paired with two buffet lamps to anchor it down, it would look great!

Basket

With younger kids and all things to corral, baskets are a godsend. This simple woven basket would be perfect, as well as lighten up the area, just a little. Used to corral those loose toys or store extra blankets.

Pillows

I’d do some of these. They would look amazing with a grey sofa while bringing in some subtle color!

Blanket

Another easy way to bring in subtle colors in an effortless way. We love all the combos with our other finds.

Fireplace

For anyone with a very dark and looming fireplace, another option is to white wash it. It’s amazing how eliminating something so dominating can really do a lot for your home. A great tutorial is here, for stone. And check out ours here, for brick.

Colorful books can go a long way in personalizing everything. Etsy and various flea markets are a great source, and this is a great, under-utilized accessory for great, easy color.

Coffee Table

A basket like this, to round up magazines, remotes, etc. Paired with a beautiful little vase like this is another opportunity to lighten up wood and gray tones.

Art

This colorful art ties in all the colors beautifully, and fills the wall in an easy way. Adding color doesn’t have to be complicated, and this is a great little reminder!

Rugs

Rugs are an incredible opportunity to bring in easy color. This one is a great way to bring some beautiful hues into the space, in an effortless way. We also think a larger naturally woven rug underneath, would really help offset any space as far as positioning of the fireplace and the large sofa. We usually go as large as possible, and measure with tape before making a commitment. You probably remember a sneak peek of the colorful rug, from this kitchen – it’s gorgeous in person and we thought this was such a fun colorful rug, we’d feature it again.

Kitchen
Someone asked us about easy kitchen accessories lately, saying that they’re never sure what to use in their kitchen. We thought we’d throw in some of our latest favorite finds for easy color on your countertops, floors, and character on your ceilings too with lighting!

Rug – This runner would be a fun accent for the floor. Another subtle way to pull in all that color.

Lights – Lights are a great way to add some major character to ceilings, and really fill in that space.

Centerpiece – Something fun for an island, or centerpiece for a kitchen table- it’s simple, but a great holder for fruit, and even ornaments during the holidays.

Canisters – 123 – we love this easy colorful take on a traditional accessory!

Mixing Bowl – another great way to add soft color

{Paired with these on the counter}: a stack of these bowls + this

A cookie jar – this one is so fun! – We adore it!

Towels – never under estimate the simple things… Fun towels are another subtle way to tie in that color
