This space has seen a few subtle changes since we switched it over from the-red-is-burning-my-cornea days. But I have to say, the sleeping room {basically how we managed three elementary school kids with a little under 1700 sq ft before we finished off more of the house} is how we survived for so long. Out of a desire to create a special space in our new home for our kids, this room is near and dear to our hearts.
We moved out and into our own primary suite last weekend, {a 5 year process with local codes and septic} and we’re hard at work, piecing the kiddos rooms together until our hardwoods are refinished in the entire home due to a leak we had this winter – now a great opportunity to match up flooring throughout the house. But in the meantime, we thought we’d share the space design for Malone’s room today, since he’ll be taking over this one: Boys space design ideas!
But first, a quick trip down memory lane.
I’ve been known to be fussy about bedrooms for my kiddos in the past. It’s funny how that changes as they grow. This wallpaper was designed by me. The fabrics were pieced together and hand sewn and designed by me. I’ll always do art for them in some capacity because I can’t help myself. But this time around, the name of the game is fast and easy, practical and cheap. Because teenagers. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be amazing. And gosh I loved this space.
It may seem a little odd to some, but it was a great way to create space in our limited square footage, and build memories with these kiddos to last a lifetime. Each child has shared a space in some capacity for all of their life, so now at the ages of 16, 14 and soon-to-be 13 {hold me} their own spaces is a big deal.
Our oldest soon moved out when the basement was completed, and had a room of his very own. But the younger two have been strong room sharers for a few years beyond. Yes, they had some disagreements, but basically they’re like a grumpy old couple and let’s just say the first night left them not sleeping so well, since they’re used to each other’s company. They are buddies, even when they don’t want to admit it.
Meanwhile, I shared Emerson’s room plans here -I’m cooking up some art as we speak!
And since this will become the youngest’s space, he’ll be sharing this closet area {still one of my faves, when it’s clean} with his brother.
closet before…
Here are a few pieces that we love, that will definitely help bring all this together! Boys space design ideas!
It all started with this vintage wool blanket I found {at a ridiculous price, in near perfect condition, no worries I washed it twice} at the local flea market. And I’ve decided to build the room from there.
I actually took the design in another direction, with some ill-fated plaids that just weren’t working. Call it design fatigue between moving and planning and creating spaces for clients. But my creative friend Mary {stained glass + stylist friend} stepped in for a little collab, and a little redirect that I needed with fresh eyes… and I have to say I am pumped about this space. So here are a few of my fave finds!
• Paint: We’ll still be keeping the same wall + ceiling colors, {sw tidewater} but I’m going bold on one wall since accents never go out of style. I’ve fallen in love with this blue/green on my own closet walls, and fully plan to use it in his room as well.
• Bedding:
I spied this duvet at Target + fell in love. Paired with this quilt it really pairs wonderfully with that wool blanket! The sheets {Threshold – no longer available?} are thrown in for a little pattern play. You guys know I can’t resist a stripe. Pillows tie it all together with basics in the best of ways.
• Rug – I love a good flat weave {only with a rug pad} and I scored this one here for a great price.
• Side tables + lamps: Sconces were our original purchase, years ago from West Elm. + A touch of modern to hold books + collectibles.
• Chest + Desk + Chair: all reused from his old space – Chest {we scored this one on MAJOR open box discount years ago + it’s a wonderful piece}/ Desk / Chair
• Bed – We found this one in simple lines, and love the way it looks.
• Light – original to the space.
• Pennant – I love this one + our cape art, here.
I also plan to paint some fun art that I have up my sleeve for over his bed! I am so excited that this is a little space we can pull together for him. Thanks for tuning in for another update. Hoping to get started on round two, soon.
Have an inspired day!
