We’re thrilled to show off this little redo we took on with our sweet clients and their master bedroom. These two have four kiddos and run four businesses between the two of them. We think they most definitely were ready for a little sanctuary for themselves. We thought this idea was super sweet, because they gifted this space to each other for their Christmas present this year, and we were honored to be a part of it. We don’t know about you, but their love language is right up our alley.
Today we thought we’d share the little details, and give a few of our favorite tips for creating a sanctuary in your bedroom.
Make it an escape
Stop using your bedroom as an afterthought. I remember the first time we really made our master bedroom our own, and I realized in that moment how important it was, to stop putting our space, last.
We’d spent all this time working on our kids rooms, and then moved to the main area of the house. It made such a difference to have a real escape just to ourselves, it changed the way we looked at everything. Viewing it as an escape is a great way to change your perspective, and it’s a great way to do something just for you.
No matter what stage of life you find yourself in, doing a space as an escape is an important part of adulting, if we do say so ourselves.
Make it personal
We love the way they brought in personal touches, like this sign that totally signifies this sweet couple. She saw this piece and immediately fell in love. I think that everything these two do, reflects their entrepreneurial spirit and love of community, so this art really is perfect. Then we surrounded it with photos of their family and some of their favorite moments to bring in one of a kind touches.
Art doesn’t have to be an afterthought. So make it personal with sweet pieces that make you smile.
They’re the very best accents.
Mix your finishes
I still remember in the 80’s when we visited a furniture store and my parents looked for hours. They cut a deal on new furniture, while my brother and sister and I lowkey played hide and seek, and house. {I mean, is there anything cooler than a furniture store when you’re a kid?} I got a really nice matching cherry bedroom suite and back then, that was FANCY. I eventually spilled fingernail polish on it, and acquired a few scratches over the years, but I was probably 9 when my parents purchased those pieces, and it served as our first bedroom furniture when Jamin and I got married.
I gradually replaced it over the years, and one could argue my parents certainly got their money’s worth. That was a good story. What was my point? You could totally go that route, or give yourself permission to do something else since it’s not 1989 anymore.
This little sanctuary is a testimony to mixing and matching and making it yours. They also brought in a mix of high and low prices, so that they could splurge on what they really wanted. We think that’s important when putting together a real live adult space.
Bring in what you love, and make it a part of a multi-layered, interesting space. The more varied, the better.
Maximize storage
Not only does it need to look good, it obviously should work hard for you, too. That whole form vs. function thing really comes into play with a bedroom of your own. These sweet people are avid readers, and they need plenty of storage for clothes and more. We loved bringing in accents and awesome options for their bedroom pieces and what they needed.
Look for opportunities to combine style, with more.
Don’t be afraid of color
Chromophobia is a thing.
We see the world in color, so why not bring it into your home? The possibilities are endless when you incorporate them into your home, and we think that using them in a subtle way is a great solution. Color doesn’t have to be viewed as overstimulating and neutrals don’t have to be the only relaxing option.
Look for opportunities in bedding, accents for the wall, furniture pieces and more.
You never know what you can use that can bring in so much personality!
