A sweet reader, Shelly, wrote in recently with this question:
… I’ve noticed a lot of functional art in your space, and I was wondering if you could tell me more? Specifically the art in your studio. I just love it and was wondering if you could tell me if you made it and how and what you use it for? Thanks so much…
In our home, we’ve always been big believers in functional or meaningful art for our space. As far as functional, we’ve loved our chalkboard in our kitchen for the kids to play on, but we’ve also really enjoyed these boards throughout the house. Functional has been one of our very favorites when it comes to double use on that valuable real estate that is our walls. And since we homeschool, and run a business from home… the most helpful pieces we’ve added over time have been the dry erase boards throughout our house.
From multiplication tables, to notes for each other, lesson plans, schedules, and everything in between… we’ve used them like crazy. But they don’t have to be your typical, sterile white boards you’d think of when you see such a piece.
We used this board {with diy geometric art} in our studio for all things lists and plans. We’ve had it for a few years now and it’s still one of my faves to this day.
We took this framed mirror that once sat in our dining room, and when we decided to start homeschooling, transformed it into a dry erase board for the kids.
We use it daily, and while we also love chalkboards, it’s a little bit more un-conventional than you usual piece.
Simply paint a pattern on a piece of MDF, and add plexiglass. TADA! You have a fabulously functional piece for your home. To see more about building frames, be sure to check out these posts where we give a little more detail here + here.
We even added this little board to the side here for more independent work in the classroom. It’s literally a stencil with distressed paint on MDF board, plexiglass cut to size, and mounted on top with holes on each corner. An instant writing space. With style when it’s not in use, if we do say so ourselves.
We shared our map last year, and it’s a great source for documenting trips, assisting with lessons in school, and just all around fun art in the home.
If you don’t feel up to making your own map, you could purchase our smaller versions here – {a few sizes available which contain our own original art}. Mounted to wood + plexiglass on top = your very own board.
The possibilities are kind of endless!
We hope this answers some of your questions about the dry erase boards in our home. Who knew such simple materials could be so fun for all things decor and functionality?
For more options on art in the home, or further details on a variety of frame options, be sure to check out our books. They’re still available for a bundled price – perfect for that special valentine, if you ask us!
Thanks for stopping by, and as always, if you try one… let us know! You’ll be surprised at how fun and handy they are.
