Someone described the Alabama humidity to us the other day, by saying it felt like “walking to into a yawn”. That pretty much nails it in one odd, succinct description when it comes to the level of hot, blanketing moisture in the air. It can be a little suppressing if you don’t have a good plan waiting in the wings to keep cool.
One of our favorite ever memories about summer, was the ice cream truck rolling down our street. It was such a treat to hear the music, and see all the kids come from various places to stand in line and pick their favorites. It was like a race to see who could grab a few dollars once mom and dad gave permission, to go join the line by the truck, and stare at all the cool pictures while we waited.
And one of our very favorite things about summer, are the ice-cream / popscicle varieties out there… I mean you have to survive the depths of ridiculous suffocating humidity with an excuse for some cool treats, right?
We love the good classics just like anyone else. But on our last trip to the market, we accumulated a nice variety of fresh fruits. So in an effort to fight ‘the yawn’, we present you with a twist on our childhood favorite: Push Pops.
These little guys are super simple to make and you can pull together any flavor you want and can’t find in the store. Simple, fresh, healthy and fun.
What’s not to love?
Even the little ones love them.
Picking their own flavor equals winning.
The process is so simple, the kids can be a part of the process in creating their own versions.
We used blackberries and blueberries for a little tart. And some fresh pineapple and strawberries for a little sweet.
Here’s some of our favorite recipes:
• Strawberry Pineapple: 3 strawberries + 2 chunks of pineapple + 1 large scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt
• Blackberry Strawapple: 4 Blackberries + 2 chunks pineapple + 1 strawberry + 1 large scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt
• Blueberry: 22 blueberries + 1 large scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt
Simply combine all the ingredients into a blender and blend until it is a smooth and even a little melted.
Then we simply poured them into the push pop molds we found on Amazon.
You can buy holders or make some but we went for simple, using the wired shelves in the freezer, right next to that giant bushel of green beans I bought. (The sticks will unscrew as well if you want to just set them in a door.)
Let them freeze for about 4 hours or until solid again, and they are ready to eat!

The weather for this entire summer has been totally wacky. We’ve had more rain here that I can ever remember.
But…I really don’t want summer to go away. You know what I mean?
Back-to-school time puts me in an awful funk. Uggh.
We make smoothies all the time and I have yet to find a blender that isn’t huge but works well. What blender do you have and does it crush ice well? (I know you didn’t put ice in your push pops but crushing it is a main criteria!)
