What do you do when your younger kiddos refuse to take their Christmas trees down because they “feel cozy”? You make them relevant to the holiday at hand, of course. Because they weren’t budging. And today, because I feel like we’re usually surrounded by the bigger projects, and because this might be the outright silliest thing I’ve ever shared here, I thought it might be fun to do something simple: Easy Valentine’s Trees!
While they were at school last Thursday, we said goodbye to Christmas and updated it with some fun, colorful additions.
I’m sure that these will still be up in the summer, so if it drives me crazy enough by then, I may switch them out even more. St. Patty’s. 4th of July. Halloween. Our creativity {and subsequent creative laziness} knows no bounds. Or take them down when no one is home because sometimes I’m a control freak even though I try to be a good mom and let them have say over their spaces. {KIDDING. I won’t take it down without their permission. They really don’t ask for much.}
But I have to say, I’m not sad about it. I think it looks awesome. I told you we love Valentine’s around here. I’m a little dangerous. Nothing is safe. {Cue dogs, decked out in some kind of costume I’m sure to screen print over the weekend.}
I used sheets of thick felt {like these, here.} I cut out simple heart shapes with a sharper pair of scissors after I traced these three from a pattern I quickly made. Helpful tip: I was feeling kind of quick about it, so I doubled up on the felt and cut two at a time to make it go faster.
Want your own pattern? Get it here! — Just click + print + cut to trace.
Also, be sure to check out these little conversation hearts + baker’s twine, here. I added with this easy find.
When the little hearts were complete, I combined the colors for an easy, colorful look. I did a more ‘masculine’ combo for my son, and the more pastel addition for my daughter, but still used both combos on both trees.
When I hot glued them together, I simply added a piece of twine in the middle.
Tada! Finished.
For singular hearts {I didn’t have many} I just added a small piece of felt on the back to secure the hot glue. You could always do two hearts of the same size, but I felt I’d been extra enough that day. Sometimes my extra has limits. I guess this is really if you just so happened to have some left over.
When I was finished, these were ready to go!
We just love a happy little colorful addition to any room.
This made them smile when they came home. They weren’t too annoyed with me, after all.
My wheels are already spinning over the next holiday…
Do you guys decorate your trees for other holidays? Do you have children who refuse to take them down? Mine are usually gone by the first of January, but they wanted theirs up. I feel like this was an appropriate compromise.
As always, I’d love to hear.
Reality angle: With dishes and birthday balloons that are still dominating her room, to boot. It is what it is. Or something. I didn’t even show you that bed.
And when the dogs hear that camera clicking, they like to join in for treats. And I like to pose randomly by trees that have absolutely no relevance to anything. Because festive.
Have an inspired day!
