Now that our kiddos are older, they’re big participants in our home and all things jobs and chores and so much more. We actually get a few questions about how we motivate them to participate in all things work around the house.
They started helping out from a young age, with things we knew they could handle. And we won’t lie, while they usually do their chores {sometimes, with extensive verbal prompting} we decided we were tired of being the perpetual bad guys. It was time to give them something to help them visually stay on top of it. This way, they know what they need to accomplish for the day, and how to earn that allowance at the end of the week.
So while we have used some chore charts in the past, {and loved them} we decided to simplify with a reboot of sorts to have a little something sufficient for the fridge. Cheers to a new year!
We simply laminated them {if my life ever feels out of control, I can laminate something and the world is right again} and put them on the fridge. We filled them out with chores, and they move little magnets from “to do” to “done” on each side of the columns. Tada! Mission accomplished.
For the magnets, I pieced together a pile from my crafting supplies which are oh so easy but definitely have that new year’s motivational sparkle: {affilaite links below}
• cork slices
• metallic disks – the kind you can scoop up at any craft section – kind of like giant confetti
• magnets {always be careful with these and younger children}
• hot glue gun
This was such an easy project, I put the glue gun on low, and let our ten year old be in charge. She has this thing with glue guns, and loves creating.
True story: I left said glue gun and a pile of felt + scissors out when I was making a few costume pieces for Halloween, and she created things for the rest of the day. I didn’t think it was possible to have a marathon crafting session… guess I was wrong.
I’m not sure where she gets it… ;D
Simply put the disks on top of the cork, and the magnets on the bottom.
You can do this with all kinds of magnets, not just these. They just added a little handmade element to get her involved.
Then your charts {once printed and laminated} are ready to go!
We have them for all three kiddos, but this Cinderella was more than happy to model them in her unicorn onesie. Yes, it was at the top of her Christmas list. It’s kind of amazing.
Want them? We have four choices! Get them here: {choresforkidsmagnetic_rosette / choresforkidsmagnetic_floral /choresforkidsmagnetic_diagnonal / choresforkidsmagnetic_blueplaid}
Her “dramatic” face when she realized that this was a real chore chart and not “just a photo shoot” {The funny part is, she already does this stuff anyway.}
As always, we hope you enjoy!
